SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH Registration and Exhibitor Set-up 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH Opening Session - "Beyond the Border: How ITS is Leading the Way" Moderator: Jane White, LA County Department of Public Works, Chair ITS California This opening session will focus on how ITS has crossed the border into becoming not only a mainstream philosophy in day-today transportation operations, but also in the daily lives of commuters and system users. A distinguished panel of public and private transportation professionals will address how ITS improves our lives every day and its importance in the future. Panelists include: David St. Amant, Econolite Group Inc, Chair ITS America Malcolm Dougherty, Caltrans, Director Anthony Levandowski, Google Inc., (Invited) Gary Gallegos, Executive Director, SANDAG Waze Speaker, (Invited) Technical Session 1 - "Making BIG Data Work for Transportation" Moderator: Melissa Hewitt, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. In the transportation world, larger and more complex data sets are becoming available. They are more intricate and multifaceted than can be handled by low-end database management and processing tools. When mined and applied correctly, big data can transform the way the transportation system operates. This session will focus on the new ways in which big data is being harnessed and utilized in transportation for monitoring and operations as well as travel and investment choices. Luncheon Keynote - "The State of ITS in the US and What the Future Holds" 12:15 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Speaker: Scott Belcher, President and CEO, ITS America Scott Belcher, President and CEO of ITS America, will provide an update of ITS America (ITSA) and federal activities and events, including the ITSA Leadership Circle, legislative advocacy efforts, efforts to protect the 5.9 GHz band of spectrum for the development of connected vehicle technology, and other on-going ITSA activities.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH Technical Session 2 - "International ITS Examples: Similarities and Differences" 1:45 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Co-Moderators: Gary Christofferson, Cisco Systems, Inc. Brian Burkhard, Transpo Group Over the years, the United States has learned a great deal about ITS technologies and concepts from other countries through information exchange efforts, scanning tours, research studies and, of course, conferences and exhibitions. Recently there has been a hotbed of new ITS developments in various other countries and regions of the world. These include Middle East countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as well as locations in China, Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa and throughout Europe. By examining the similarities and differences with these countries, we can learn about potential new ways to look at, operate, utilize and deploy ITS. This session will provide presentations on some of these recent key international ITS developments. Technical Session 3 - "Innovation within the California Transit World" 1:45 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Moderator: Josh Peterman, Fehr & Peers This session will discuss recent trends in the California transit world including the latest transit signal priority systems, open transit data applications, fare payment and management systems, bus rapid transit deployments and multimodal applications. This session will explore how ITS standards come into play related to these deployments. Insights will also be provided from the federal perspective as it relates to Map-21 and other federal transit related research, such as transit connected vehicle applications. Vendor Technology Showcase 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Co- Moderators: Steve Gota, LA Metro Jane White, LA County Department of Public Works Returning this year, ITS California will once again host the very popular Vendor Technology Showcase! All ITS California members who are exhibitors and sponsors of our organization and this 2013 Annual Conference and Exhibition will be invited to present their latest products and advancements to all conference attendees during this session. The Showcase provides an exclusive opportunity for our higher tiered members to highlight their firms when the Exhibit Hall is closed and there are no concurrent technical sessions. It is a unique forum to distribute information to conference attendees in a non-competitive, low pressure environment. Since this session will occur directly before our Monday Evening Exhibit Hall Delegate reception, if something interests an attendee, they will have an opportunity to follow-up with that exhibitor or sponsor immediately after.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH Delegate Reception Exhibit Hall Sponsored by ITS California 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 1ST Technical Session 4 - "Championing Local ITS Projects" Moderator: James Dreisbach-Towle, San Diego Association of Governments This session will explore ITS projects from local agencies perspectives. Topics will range from examples of low-cost solutions that result in big gains, what challenges were faced in implementing these projects and how they were addressed or resolved. Featured during this session will be a discussion on identifying critical stakeholders and project champions and how to attract and work with these influential ITS sponsors. Presentations during this session will highlight key ITS projects that increased safety, fostered mobility, and/or improved the public quality of life. Technical Session 5 - "Latest Trends in TMC Operations" Moderator: Melanie Crotty, Metropolitan Transportation Commission As regions continue to deploy ITS on freeways, adjacent arterials and transit systems, the coordination and management between the systems and implementing agencies becomes increasingly important. Transportation management centers are addressing these challenges through new partnerships and different scales of operations. This session will explore how regional transportation management centers are addressing this ever growing portfolio of systems to manage. Leaders from California and throughout the country will address topics such as current thinking on organization of TMCs, top challenges that managers face, the latest tools and strategies are to manage this complex portfolio. Technical Session 6 - "Greenhouse Gas Emissions: How ITS can help?" 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Moderator: Dan Lukasik, Delcan Corporation California, along with like many other states, has enacted major initiatives for slowing climate change and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Our state has been among the most progressive with targets aimed at reducing GHG emissions to 1990 levels by the year a reduction of approximately 30 percent. ITS is seen as one of the major components in reaching these goals. This session will present the state of GhG emission reduction programs, policies and projects in our state with a specific emphasis on the latest ITS technologies and concepts that are in play.
Tuesday, October 1ST Technical Session 7 - "Application of Arterial ITS Technologies A National Perspective" 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Moderator: Jeff Spinazze, Econolite Control Products Inc. In this ever changing environemt, new technologies are frequently emerging to support transportation professionals in improving the efficiency of transportation management systems, increasing system reliability, and reducing the overall cost of operations and management. These new tools require interaction among all elements of a transportation ecosystem. This session will focus on several new technologies that closely interact with one another including communications, sensing technologies for multiple modes of mobility and the management systems that oversee the entire operation. Examples of the implementation of the technologies outside California will be highlighted. Lunch 12:30 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Exclusive Exhibit Hall Focus 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Spend the afternoon learning more about the latest technologies, services and products in the marketplace during this exclusive exhibit hall session. Technology Tours 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Participate in technical tours of the San Diego I-15 Integrated Corridor Management System (ICMS) and the San Diego Trolley Control facility. Full and one-day conference attendees are eligible to attend. Space is limited, so reservations will be needed in advance. There are no additional costs for these tours. San Diego I-15 ICMS Tour: Bus tour of the newly opened I-15 ICMS corridor, including a glimpse of the I-15 managed lanes, and a tour of the Caltrans District 11 Traffic Management Center (TMC) providing a live, hands-on demonstration of the I-15 ICMS operations in action. San Diego Trolley Control Facility Tour: Board the MTS trolley directly from the hotel property for a 20 minute scenic ride concluding at the San Diego Trolley Operations Control Center (OCC) where you will see first-hand the systems and learn about the operations, security, and safety systems controlling this world class transit system.
Tuesday, October 1ST Delegate Reception Poolside 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2ND Technical Session 8 - "Technology Innovations in Tolling/Managed Lanes" Moderator: Arti Gupta, ACS-Xerox The concepts of Open Road Tolling (ORT) and managed lanes plus the integration of intelligent transportation systems with them is ever increasing in California and nationwide, as a means of offering more travel choices and continuing to fund infrastructure.
