1 Sustainable Building Interior Renovation and Decoration Initiative in China [SUS BIRD] Location: China (covering 5 target areas: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing and Jiangsu province) Duration: 2009 December 2013 December (48 months)

2 Fact & Figures: Unhealthy indoor air/worker/environment Objective: consumers choosing safe, healthy and environmentally friendly decoration products and appliances; SMEs applying healthy and environmentally friendly working materials and procedures. Grant: ,76 Target groups: Building Interior Renovation and Decoration (BIRD) SMEs; end consumers; and policy makers. Beneficiaries: Inhabitants, BIRD industry workers, SMEs, owners of buildings, manufacturer of BIRD products, policy makers, general public. Existing platforms: - Network reaching SMEs by China Quality Mark Certification Group (29 branches all over China) and local construction and decoration associations; - Effective SCP replication by integrating CSCP s training programme and marketing strategies; -Strong research ability and policy recommendation to the policy maker, e.g. Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development; - Link to the UNEP SBCI - Sustainable Buildings and Construction Initiative ( in order to benefit from the existing networks and use all possible synergies.

3 Impact in numbers 7 workshops and seminars; 20 trainers gained certificate; 260 SMEs trained; Criteria for 23 types of products developed; environmental / technical / economic results: 50 SBI alliance member SMEs recruited; 30 SMEs applied pilot project (inc. public buildings, civil buildings). 4 Personal experience of change Now we realize that the sustainability in interior decoration highly relies on the products we choose. We should let more people know what kind of BIRD products are sustainable and what are not. We will promote this concept to our customers by providing them comprehensive solutions. --Huan Qi We are very interested in the SUS BIRD pilot project, I invite you to visit our company to give advice so that we can improve our work and service quality. Huan Qi I think design is a very important phase during the decoration because customers sometimes don t know what they want. We integrate the sustainable or green concept to our design so that the sustainability could be guaranteed in the early stage. 5 Indicators for impact assessment: monitor the outreach to target groups: feedback workshops, training assessment survey, long-term contact and visit, SBI Alliance member recruiting, award etc. expected indicators for uptake of project results by other stakeholders: SUS BIRD products certification programme, technical support to SUS BIRD standardization, high level policy recommendation etc. Indicators for beneficiaries: electricity savings, water savings, degree of comfort of life, indoor air quality, working conditions and procedures etc.

6 How to make a difference. An example that multiplies our outreach to large numbers of target groups - SUS BIRD Products Certification Programme, recognized in whole China, including certification of energy-saving products (e.g. lighting, air conditioner), water-saving products (e.g. faucet, closestool), environment-friendly products etc., and all certified products enter PIS system for customer s choice and comparison, and SMEs participating in the certification programme are invited to join SBI alliance. Other ways are also available e.g. products handbooks, project flyers, cooperation with construction material markets and the mass media. How the replication of SCP makes a difference in SUS BIRD project contribution to the SUS BIRD standardization and certification process; close cooperation with government agencies such as MoHURD, NDRC, MIIT etc. makes it possible to replicate SCP national wide; international partners like CSCP and UNEP will help promote successful BIRD practices regionally or even globally.

7 Specific lessons learnt from replication The best ways to speak/reach out to SMEs in large numbers: Existing partners networks; Local construction and decoration associations; SUS BIRD products certification programmes; SUS BIRD training programmes; SUS BIRD pilot projects; SBI alliance; Big retailers etc. How to convince policy-makers to promote SCP practises? Existing partners such as CSTC; Conferences; Policy recommenders in Universities etc. How to make SCP a self-propelling business case for the SMEs? Continuous training and advising; changing their old concept model. Convincing consumers before SMEs (creating demand) For example: For most buyers, only when they realize the danger of non-sustainable decoration, e.g. their children will get sick when living in a room with bad air quality, they will buy sustainable products with higher price. Under this circumstance, we will let our target groups know more information regarding the harm of nonsustainable products, and thus, health and safety will be a strong incentive for consumers to pay more attention and cost for the sustainable products.
