3 The Camp Story Co-created and developed by Aalto University in Finland and the New Club of Paris as ACSI: Aalto Camp for Societal Innovation. Diverse Camps have been run in different formats since There have been camps for 25 people and others for 180 people. The first camps were run for 8 days. Later Camps have been run for 2 to 4 days. Themes (examples): Open innovation Social innovation for Sustainable Urban Development Inclusive Society Connecting Smart Citizens in Open innovation Practice

4 Guiding Principles & Values Challenge focus: - Holistic and systemic approach - Decomposed into realistic challenges, each based on a specific perspective - The challenge is societal in nature - The challenge is open, that is: it does not simply test an already existing idea Goals: - Mind-set change to stimulate a culture of innovation - Engage a wide diversity of stakeholders - Build shared understanding on societal issues - Leverage collective/distributed intelligence to tackle the challenge

5 Distinctive features: - It's not a workshop, seminar or training! - Self-organising work process, within a facilitated framework - Learning-by-doing, co-creation, experimentation - Prototyping promising ideas (not just talking) - Simple, easy, accessible, enjoyable - Community building, engagement, involving networks of networks - Thinking in output, outcome, and impact - Effective and affordable - Going faster than you think is possible

9 Goals of Science meets Parliaments Closer relations between policy-makers and scientists in the process of adopting evidence-informed European decisions Promote a culture of evidence informed policy making Creating platforms for discussions between scientists and policy-makers Cooperation with the EU Member States. 11 ROUNDTABLE 1 - Research On Water Stress In The Mediterranean Area, Water Quality and Energy: Challenges And Opportunities ROUNDTABLE 2 - Technological needs and demands. The vision from the private sector Huge challenge Mediterranean area Climate Change: drought, severe water stress, population growth, strong water needs for agriculture, sustainable food systems, water saving solutions Technology transfer Difficulty and cost of integrating technology in production processes such as the agri-food industry Technological solutions, R&D Mindset Irrigation modernization, technologies systems latest Importance of water culture and citizen s awareness. Need of knowledge, research, investment, regulatory framework but also awareness in citizens Cost Reduction through R&D Communication and cooperation Linking the cost of water to the cost of energy. Reduce these costs through R & D. Need to develop strategies to obtain water at a lower price Identify needs, demands and unite them with lines of research. Improving knowledge transfer, and cooperation between research institutions, universities and industry.

Innovation and modernization of irrigation systems. Sufficient financial support is needed. Increase in the budget for the future seven-year programme for research and innovation HORIZON PRIMA project. Public Sector Public Administration Awareness: increase the simplification of administrative procedures, prioritize criteria in contracts that are not only economic, but innovation, that the projects are of affordable size, a dimension to be able to start with pilot experiences on a small scale. Climate change Climate change is a challenge for the countries of southern Europe and especially Spain. The efforts have to serve not to get worse, but they do not reach to improve but to that the situation is maintained.
