To emphasize the changing nature of the fields of interest we refrain from giving a clear delineation and exhaustive list of topics. However, certainly included are: artificial intelligence (including machine learning, expert and knowledge based systems approaches), information systems (particularly decision support systems), approximate reasoning (including fuzzy approaches and reasoning under uncertainty), knowledge acquisition and representation, modeling, diagnosis, and control. 10 Xl PREFACE As we all have been witnessing lately, the fuzzy technology has emerged as one of the most exciting new technologies at hand. It is responsible for improving many industrial and consumer systems and profoundly affects our daily lives. To exchange ideas and research results of this important area of fuzzy logic, more than 500 researchers and system engineers from 36 countries had gathered at the Fifth IFSA World Congress in Seoul, Korea. Two objectives were set up for the meeting: one was to encourage communications between researchers of fuzzy logic and related systems and the second to explore industrial applications of fuzzy technology, implementing human intelligent in machines and systems. The present book is an outgrowth of contributions by the participants at the Congress. Selections were made so that this volume reflects important current directions of Fuzzy Logic and Technology. All the authors were requested to extend and/or update their original contributions in the proceedings. The contents are divided into four chapters; (i) Intelligent Systems, (ii) Engineering, (iii) Mathematical Foundations and (iv) Information Sciences. The first chapter on intelligent systems contains topics including approximate reasoning, knowledge representation, computer vision and pattern recognition. The second chapter on engineering deals with intelligent robotics, fuzzy logic control, industrial systems, manufacturing, image signal processing, hardware devices, neural network, genetic algorithm and nuclear science. The third chapter on mathematical foundations includes topics on non-classical logics, category theory, algebra, topology, probability and statistics, relational equations. The fourth chapter on information sciences handles information retrieval, fuzzy database system, management science, operation research and decision making. We hope that this volume would serve the academia as well as the technical community in a way that fuzzy logic is appreciated as a methodology for enlarging concepts, design and manufacture of intelligent systems and, ultimately, attaining improved understanding of the basic science and the foundations of human reasoning.
