2 For Teachers: Introduction The design, manufacture and marketing of a product is now very much a global concern impacting on the wider community, environment and economy. This program explores the associated social, lifestyle, ethical and ecological considerations that designers and multinational companies must address while moving through the design cycle. The program uses clear commentary, historical footage and real products to illustrate these considerations. Contributions from Dr Anderson and Dr Jackson from the Swinburne University of Technology enable the student to clearly comprehend these issues as well as make their own judgment of the positive and negative aspects of the Global Marketplace. 7 After Viewing the Program 1. A key aspect of early and modern mass production systems is the use of assembly lines. Explain this term highlighting the advantages it has during the manufacturing process. 2. Many products are sold worldwide; however, these often have to be remodelled in order to address the needs of the countries in which they will be sold. List three factors that may have to be remodelled or considered. 3. Consumers choose products not just for what they do, but for what they tell the world about them Using a real example explain what this statement means. 4. Due to the reliability of modern technology most products made by a variety of brands will perform equally well. This means that one of the key roles of the designer is to inject some personality into a product. Using a familiar product explain how the designer has made it stand out compared to its competitors. 5. Using a plastic bottle drinks bottle as an example list the six key stages that the material and bottle experiences in its life cycle. 6. There are a number of areas that are impacted by the life cycle of a product including energy consumption, human involvement, social factors and environmental issues. Define each of these terms and explain how these may influence material choice. 7. Achieving a high level of sustainability is well within reach of the developed world. Explain why those countries that are not economically developed cannot match such sustainability. 7
