5 C. RESOURCE GUIDE Definition of Environment Environment is the collective physical, chemical, and biological factors (such as climate, light intensity, soil, and living and non-living organisms) that affect individuals and/or a community and, ultimately, determine its form and survival. Areas of Science Impacting Environment While pollution or green building are among the first things that come to mind when considering the environment, the reality is there are a number of areas of science and technology that are impacting today s environment. For example: Biotechnology: The branch of technology that utilizes living organisms or biological systems to modify humans and their environment. Humans have been practicing biotechnology for centuries. For example, breeding animals and using yeast to make bread rise. When it comes to biotechnology today think DNA fingerprinting, the Human Genome Project and genetic engineering. Nanotechnology: Nanotechnology is the study and design of systems at the nanometer scale - the scale of atoms and molecules. The ability to manipulate materials on the nanometer scale could revolutionize the way that almost everything is designed and made. Nanotechnologists goal is to create cleaner, stronger and more precise products for people. Think stain-resistant clothing, newly developed paint for cars to resist corrosion and scratching, and glare-reducing coatings for eyeglasses. Robotics: A branch of artificial intelligence, robotics is the field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating devices that can move and react to sensory input robots. Today, robots are designed to explore and manipulate different environments. For example, robots are now widely used in factories to perform high-precision jobs such as welding and riveting; in special situations that would be dangerous for humans such as, cleaning toxic wastes or defusing bombs; and in homes, to perform household tasks like vacuuming. Advanced Materials Processes/Material Sciences: The refinement or creation of raw materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, plastics, rubber, glasses/ceramics, nano matter) for the purpose of advancing technology, developing more efficient products and improving the human experience. Advance Materials Processes/Material Sciences make possible products like smart skis, implantable insulindispensing devices and miniature cochlea ear implants, and NASA s Jupiter Icy Moon Orbiter. Environmental Technology: An all inclusive term used to describe pollution control devices and systems that may be utilized to remove pollutants or prevent them from entering into the environment. Think green building or architecture, hybrid cars and wind-generated electricity. Information Technology (IT): A term that encompasses all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and use information in its various forms (business data, voice conversations, still images, motion pictures, multimedia presentations, and other forms, including those not yet conceived). It is the technology that is driving what has often been called "the information revolution." IT is responsible for the Internet; global warning systems to alert people to imminent natural disasters like tsunami; and, emoticons or smileys. Page 5 of 9
