5 SPEAKERS AND CONTRIBUTORS THE INSTITUTION IS DELIGHTED TO HAVE SECURED AN INSPIRING LINE-UP OF SPEAKERS THAT WILL SHOWCASE SOME OF THE OUTSTANDING RESEARCH AND APPLICATIONS THAT CURRENTLY EXIST WITHIN THE FIELD OF SMART ACTUATION. - Organising Committee, Mechatronics, Informatics and Control Group TOM FOX TECHNOLOGY PROJECT LEAD FUTURE ACTUATION, CONTROLS DATA SERVICES Tom Fox completed a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath and has worked for AEC for 4 years in Technology, NPI (New Product Introduction) and Value Streams. Tom started the Future Actuation Technology project in February JOHN KOPP PRINCIPAL ENGINEER, MOOG John Kopp has been at Moog for 33 years with a work history including primary flight control design integration and analyses. His current role includes creation, design and development of critical technologies with significant impact to both the aerospace market and controls systems including autonomous vehicle control. These include novel forms (thin wing / high efficiency) of hydraulic/ fuel-draulic actuation, direct drive single and multi-stage servo valves and jam tolerant / high efficiency electro-mechanical actuation. His work resume includes lead design for the following programs; Cessna Citation X Primary Flight Control, Gulfstream G280 Primary Flight Control, 787 Primary Flight Control, X-35/F-35 EHAS Primary Flight Control. CHARLES MANGEOT SENIOR R&D ENGINEER, NOLIAC A/S Charles Mangeot holds a MSc in Manufacturing, Cranfield University (UK) MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Arts et Metiers (France). He spent four years as Mechanical Engineer and Project Manager at Sagem (France, Safran group), working on actuators and flight controls. He also spent 8 years as Senior R&D Engineer at Noliac A/S (DK), Piezoelectric actuators. ANDREW PLUMMER PROFESSOR OF MACHINE SYSTEMS & DIRECTOR OF THE CENTRE FOR POWER TRANSMISSION AND MOTION CONTROL, UNIVERSITY OF BATH Andrew Plummer received his PhD degree from the University of Bath in 1991, for research in the field of adaptive control of electrohydraulic systems. He has worked for Rediffusion Simulation on flight simulator control systems, as a lecturer at the University of Leeds, and as R&D manager for Instron. He is now Professor of Machine Systems at the University of Bath, and Director of the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control. Professor Plummer chairs the UK Automatic Control Council, and chaired the institution s Mechatronics Informatics and Control Group from DR DANIELE PULLINI STRATEGIC RESEARCH MANAGER, GROUP MATERIALS LABS, FIAT RESEARCH CENTRE Daniele Pullini gained a degree in General Physics and a PhD in Electronics Engineering and Communications, he now has twenty years R&D experiences in academic and industrial contexts. He authored several publications on peer-reviewed international journals and more than thirty patents valid in Europe, USA, Russia, China, and Japan on microsystems, nanomaterials, and nanotechnology. Today, Daniele manages the strategic research on Materials, Technology, and Processing of Global Materials Labs, the department of Centro Ricerche FIAT grouping the worldwide laboratories of Fiat Chrysler Automobile. DR MARTYN HUCKER PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY CENTRE, BAE SYSTEMS Martyn Hucker works for the Functional Materials Group, at the Advanced Technology Centre, BAE Systems in Bristol. His expertise lies in nano and microstructured functional and smart materials and composites. He is involved in a range of programmes at various maturity levels to exploit the technologies for various applications in different sectors such as aerospace.

RIC PARKER DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY, ROLLS-ROYCE PLC Ric Parker was appointed Director of Research & Technology, Rolls-Royce Group in January 2001 and is responsible for direction and co-ordination of Research & Technology programmes across all the Rolls-Royce businesses worldwide. After joining in 1978, he has held various posts including Chief of Composites and Ceramics, Chief of Compressor Engineering, Managing Director - Compressor Systems and Director of Engineering & Technology, Civil Aerospace. Ric was awarded a CBE in the 2013 New Year s Honours List for Services to Engineering. He is a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Engineers. Ric gained a BSc in Physics at Imperial College, London in 1975 and an MBA with distinction at Loughborough University in He has an Honorary EngD from Pusan National University, Korea and Doctorates in Engineering (honoris causa) from Sheffield University and Heriot Watt. He is a visiting Professor in Aerospace and Transport Technology at Loughborough University and an Honorary Professor in Materials Engineering at Birmingham University, UK. JOHN WEBSTER SPECIALIST MECHANICAL SCIENCES, ROLLS-ROYCE PLC John Webster has over thirty years experience in low maturity industrial research and has spent the last 15 years in the Rolls-Royce Strategic Research Centre investigating actuators and the associated technology required to achieve actuation in gas turbines. Much of this work has been around Shape Memory Alloys. He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Nottingham University and is named as inventor on over 70 patents. He is a Fellow of the institution and the IoM3. TONY ANSON PROFESSOR, BRUNEL UNIVERSITY AND DIRECTOR, PRONTINUS LTD Tony Anson trained as a Mechanical Engineer and had the benefit of experiencing diverse opportunities broadly in the engineering disciplines. The breadth of these opportunities necessitated a long and willing relationship with materials science, biology and physics. The need for this multidiscipline behaviour is evidenced in the successful application of science and engineering for cardiovascular and orthopaedic medical implants, plasma deposited thinfilm coatings, manufacturing engineering, aerospace flight hardware, and other advanced materials based products. All of these endeavours have made the transition from the academic environment to commercial activity, facilitated by the formation of several successful spin-out companies. ROB GRAY DEPUTY CHIEF DESIGNER, RED BULL TECHNOLOGY LTD Rob Gray joined the team in 2002 prior to it being bought by Red Bull, and has worked in a variety of areas including Stress Analysis, R&D, and Vehicle Design. NIGEL CROOK HEAD OF COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES, OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY Nigel Crook is leading research in cognitive robotics. After graduating with a BSc (hons) in Computing and Philosophy, Nigel went on to complete a PhD in medical expert systems and gain almost 30 years of experience as a lecturer in Computer Science and a researcher in Artificial Intelligence. An expert reviewer and evaluator for the European Commission and a member of several scientific committees for AI conferences, his research interests include biologically inspired machine learning, embodied conversational agents and social robotics. More recently, Nigel has been investigating the effects of biomimetic movement on the anthropomorphism and likability of robots.
