However, with the many types of valves commonly used in the oil and gas industry and the misinterpretation of the term double block and bleed, it was necessary to clarify the requirements and assemble more specific guidance for the company s system designers. The presence of the hydrogen is affecting equipment made of materials that were previously considered corrosion resistant such as stainless or duplex stainless steels, and this is leading to HISC failures and the development of countermeasures to address these failures. Operations, Avon, MA Speaker: Kumar Ramasundaram, Manager, Global Software Testing & Technical Support, Dresser, Inc., Avon, MA In the pneumatic or analog instruments era, providing remote technical support was difficult as the level of remote troubleshooting for analog or pneumatic instruments was very limited. With smart instruments and associated tools, the user can check the status of the device and active alarms. The alarms provide suggestions for quick error resolution. The speaker will examine the use of smart instruments in remote troubleshooting and technical support, including the use of smart technology in predictive maintenance and in emergency shutdown devices. 3 2:30 pm How Control Valve Performance Impacts Process Performance and Economics Moderator: Paul Schafbuch, Vice Chairman, VMA Technical Committee, VP, Engineering & Development, Emerson Process Management, Valve Automation, Waller, TX Speaker: James F. Beall, Principal Process Control Consultant, Industry Solutions Group, Emerson Process Management, Bryan, TX Improvements in the performance of the basic regulatory control system typically provide over one half of the economic benefit from Advanced Control Projects. Control valve performance has a major impact on control loop performance and therefore has significant

4 economic benefit. One study of over 5,000 control loops revealed that poor control valve performance had a negative impact on control loop performance on 30% of these loops! This presentation discusses aspects of control valve performance and the relevance of the ANSI/ISA Standard, Test Procedure for Control Valve Response Measurements from Step Inputs. A plant example will be used to illustrate control valve performance aspects and the challenges of trying to use a good on-off valve as a good modulating control valve. 3:30 pm Break/Exhibits 4:00 pm The Human Factor: Impact on Actuator Selection Moderator: Frederick Washburn, Vice President and General Manager, Fluid System, Rotork Controls, Rochester, NY Speaker: Kevin L. Swicegood, Consultant, Cameron Human factors are specified by many end users and contractors in some form, but rarely do the factors truly cover all elements through the full cycle of their operation. This session covers: the basic requirements of pull, both on levers and handwheels; issues associated with number of turns of handwheels; and the swing diameter of handwheels in relation to current plant safety rules. What purpose does all this serve, and is there really anyone who looks at it? These requirements vary by country, of course, and by region. Some users are more consistent from one site to the next, some less so. How many users know about the latest ways to store and transmit this information? What roles do the distributor and engineering contractor play in marshaling all this data? Where are we going with this? 10:00 am Repair & Remanufacture Moderator: Jim Casey, Product Manager, Flow Control Division, Flowserve, Cookeville, TN Speaker: Greg Johnson, President, United Valve, Houston, TX Like other aspects of the valve repair industry, the valve repair segment has changed a lot over the past 20 years. It once was a case where every two or three years a plant would send truckloads of commodity valves, nearly all of a unit s inventory, to a valve repair facility for refurbishing. But such is not the case today. Extremely low cost commodity valves make the repair of many of these valves no longer cost effective. While on the other side of the coin, more field service repairs are being performed, while shop repairs now concentrate on harder to replace critical service valves.
