2 Prologue
3 Prologue The Ruhr has always been a region of monumental structural changes. It lost over 700,000 jobs only in the mining industry. Therefore, we are forced to build up new structures and new economies. We believe that arts, culture, creativity and ideas can be strong drivers for technological and economic innovation and intelligent use of resources. Therefore, we see the Creative Industries as an important driving force for future jobs and the future structure of the region. [ ] the most important of our advantages is that this region still represents the third biggest agglomeration in Europe. However, the disadvantages can t be ignored. Recent studies show that we are permanently losing population, have just started to get older more quickly than the rest of Germany. So the problems and developments only discussed in other regions have already become reality here. The other disadvantage you should be aware of is the fact that Germany is still far behind the actual level of European discussion about Creative Industries and their development. Excerpt of the Ruhr.2010 Essen for the Ruhr Application Speech in Brussels 2007
4 Prologue Consequently, we are planning several action steps on the way from now until 2010, -We will found an initiative for the Creative Industries with well-known key persons to kick-off the discussion. -We will organise an international congress on Creative Industries with the aim to bring european exchange, experts and know-how into the region. -We will establish an institution that helps to connect existing economical support programs and cultural programs with the needs of the different branches of the Creative Industries. Excerpt of the Ruhr.2010 Essen for the Ruhr Application Speech in Brussels 2007
