4 11 mill inhabitants Area km² (4 % of BC, 3,3 % ON, 0,35% Ca) #1 Innovation Region in Europe (EUROSTAT) strong in both R&I input ( 24 bn, 5 % GDP, 26 % DE) & output (133 patents/ pop), and in education ( students in 100 HEI) Baden- Württemberg Technically: integrated systems of sensors, actors, data processors & transmitters in -meter dimensions (10-6 m) Macro-economically: key elements for harnessing the potential of societal challenges as drivers of economic growth Intelligent & autonomous MS, produced in a tailor-made, low-waste and low-cost fashion can be integrated in a broad range of products in diverse application fields Communi -cation Sensors communicate with other systems / machines /humans analyse situations (also complex ones) react autonomously and intelligently Interfaces / Gateways Actors receiving data processing transmitting data Communi data -cation Energy management Energy generation Energy storage are energy-efficient or -autarkic 4
5 Microsystems technologies (MST) could be used in all industrial sectors for intelligent, resource- and energy-efficient solutions. The integration into complex smart systems can improve also the function of existing products and processes, or make feasible totally new ones ( more than Moore ). The application of MS in products, processes and private & public infrastructures will increasingly impact on practically all areas and all aspects - of our everyday lives. Key enablers for Digitalisation Strategies In some regions, MST are already key drivers of innovation, and decisive factors for competitiveness and sustainability. Huge & diverse potential to contribute considerably to address major socio-economic problems of today s societies, e.g. Health / Nutrition / Ageing Society Mobility Security Environment / Resources Climate / Energy Harnessing this potential does NOT come automatically, ICT: data management & storage (more than Moore) Digitalisation Industry: 4.0 intelligent production, microprocess technology, printed electronics, autonomous and energy-autarkic networked sensor systems, micro-nano integration; Mobility: energy efficient and lower-cost mobility of goods and people, as well as of products, tools & machines inside a factory; Health & Well-Being: preventive health care, innovative diagnostics, faster drug development, 24/7 mobile monitoring, microsurgery, implantology; Environment: more energy-efficient, less resource intensive production, products, processes and solutions enabled by energy-autarkic, mobile, easily adaptable MS (Public and personal) Security... 5
6 Bringing together a broad spectrum of >300 MST-related S&T partners active in an area of 5-6 million inhabitants Mobilising > CA$ 150 million in a public-private partnership with national + regional + EU funds A comprehensive regional & STI development approach in the form of 25 RTDI and 13 structural projects The Europe 2020 Growth Strategy (all policy areas) EaSI (Employment & Social Inclusion) Youth on the Move, R&I for Smart Specialisation (regional development - local jobs through trans-border cooperations) Horizon 2020 the EU s R&I Framework Program Digital Agenda; Connecting Europe Facility; LIFE (environment financing instrument) Energy Union, SET Plan Cross-cutting EU Health Programme Creative Europe; Erasmus+ Excellence Initiative - structural changes for cuttingedge research at Higher Education Institutions Internationalisation Strategy for Science & Research High-Tech Strategy 2020 o o Assessing R&I support policies and develop new ones Supporting top-level research on key technologies focused on lead markets of the future to develop convincing answers to the Grand Challenges Spitzen -Cluster Competition flagship of the High- Tech Strategy and pillar of the S&R Internationalisation Strategy 6
7 Every consortium successful in national Spitzencluster competition gets additional funding (ca 8 million CAD) R&I and enterprise support programmes Cluster support programmes BW innovation agencies support Practitioners aim for processes to integrate bottom-up local & strategic top-down knowledge with the objective to achieve results, which are more strategic and better informed, more outward looking and linking, more forward-looking and pro-acting, better involving (p&p) stakeholders, prioritising and focusing (p&p) investments on regional strengths & potential in global value chains (GVC) and on fields/niches with a high and diverse growth / market potential to address societal challenges (e.g. KETs, GPTs). Strong regional base, globally competitive: - 6 % of global MST production, - 15 % of all related patents worldwide - ca employees in enterprises ranging from home-grown multinationals to globally competitive SMEs, - approx. CA$ 25 billion annual turnover Large, diverse application potential Embedded in the associational innovation system of BW, with its related variety and highly differentiated knowledge & technology transfer and management systems 7
