3 SECTION 1 Tender for a regional project In July 2014 the Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes issued a tender for proposals to develop digital applications for educational projects based on the 2015 voyage of L Hermione. The project was awarded to a consortium of three companies called La Flottille Numérique (the Digital Flotilla): Studio Nyx Equilibre Games Depuis 1977 video games developers video games developers graphic design and PR The consortium proposed a portfolio of products, some free of charge, some paid, created within a tight deadline to coincide with the crossing of the Atlantic by L Hermione. 4 SECTION 2 The L Hermione project L Hermione is a large-scale project in two parts: Reconstruction of a full-size replica of an 18th century frigate, the ship that carried the Marquis de Lafayette on his second trip to the United States during the American Revolutionary War. The voyage of L Hermione to the United States scheduled to sail from France on April 18th 2015 with stops along the US Atlantic coast. It took 17 years to reconstruct L Hermione on the site of the Rochefort royal arsenal (in the Charente Maritime district). The building yard was open to the public, and over four million visitors helped boost the tourism, craft and scientific research sectors in the town of Rochefort. The project was financed from private and public funds. L Hermione's crew comprises a handful of seasoned sailors and also volunteers aged 19 to 50, all eager to experience a unique adventure. The crew is under the orders of Commander Yann Cariou, who was previously at the helm of le Belem, a three-mast sailing ship. Flottille Numérique : presskit 4 de 12

5 SECTION 3 Genre educational game Age 12+ years Platforms PC, ipad, Android tablets Price 7.90 The video game L Hermione, Age of Enlightenment L Hermione, Age of Enlightenment is an educational video game developed by the consortium La Flottille Numérique. The game is an exploration of L Hermione in full 3D, where players meet the characters on the frigate and assist the Marquis de Lafayette in his mission. Players must also complete various tasks relating to chronology, geography and philosophy, each interspersed with rewards and educational content. The subjects covered are the Age of Enlightenment, the American Revolution and the strategic involvement of France in the US War of Independence. The content created for the application was the fruit of a joint venture between the game developers, teachers and experts. Flottille Numérique : presskit 5 de 12

6 Educational games based on L'Hermione Find the Place The player must place various geographical zones in the correct location on a map. Chronos The player must arrange particular events in chronological order. Ordnance Survey Map The player learns the sequence of complex events, i.e. a military campaign. The Odd One Out The player learns about the philosophical concepts of the Enlightenment and how they clashed with the ideas from previous epochs. Where can I buy the video game? 7 SECTION 4 L Hermione webdoc, the Voyage to Liberty L Hermione, the Voyage to Liberty describes the major events in FrancoAmerican relations and the evolution of this relationship over time. The experience includes more than 80 event sheets charting the frigate L'Hermione's original voyage in 1780, the history of Franco-American relations and more sensitive topics such as segregation. This rich content is presented in info sheets containing text, photos and videos. All the information gathered and the production of the data sheets was in collaboration with various History professors who are experts in the period. The Corderie Royale and its Director, Emmanuel De Fontainieu, also played an active role in validating the historical accuracy of the content. 8 SECTION 5 The journal of the main actors of the era on social networks Lafayette on Facebook! The digital developers allow the historical characters of the 18th century to speak on social networks. The educational content is delivered in an innovative and entertaining way in the form of a journal that web users can gradually discover during L'Hermione's 2015 crossing. The event was launched on March 30th and will continue until June when L Hermione reaches the United States. 9 SECTION 6 Réseau Canopé : L Hermione, un Voyage pour l Histoire To mark L Hermione's crossing, the Réseau Canopé (a French body promoting the creation of educational support material) has set up a dedicated space on its digital ecosystem: L Hermione, un Voyage pour l Histoire (L'Hermione, an Historical Voyage), where teachers, students and parents can discover a range of original educational and multidisciplinary resources based on L Hermione. The educational resources were created using the products developed by La Flottille Numérique to support the new digital applications and to demonstrate how a serious game can be used in the classroom. 10 SECTION 7 The industrial context The digital projects based on L Hermione reflect the region's aim to showcase local knowledge and expertise. Today, Angoulême is a vital development center in the image production industry (cartoons, film animation, video games, etc.), with educational establishments, training centers and companies that create, produce and distribute digital image content. This thriving ecosystem will become the main digital production center in the area in 2016 following the merger of the Poitou-Charentes, Limousin and Aquitaine regions. 11 SECTION 8 Project partners Numerous partners have been invited to participate in the project alongside the product developers. The Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes aims to highlight the scope and expertise of the digital sector in the region, and the project is in line with the proactive policy to develop e-education. The Regional Council provides financial support in the form of a refundable advance. The L'Hermione-Lafayette association has supported the project to develop digital apps from the outset, and has managed the products based on L Hermione. bit.ly/la-frégate-hermione-lafayette The Réseau Canopé is a distributor of content for teachers and professionals in the national education system, and has created a content platform dedicated to L Hermione. The projects developed by La Flottille Numérique will be included in the educational programs offered to teachers. The Centre International de Mer - Corderie Royale de Rochefort (The International Sea Center, the Royal Ropeworks at Rochefort), has been closely involved in the reconstruction of the frigate from the outset, and has brought its wealth of historical expertise to the project. Teaching staff at the high schools in Angoulême (Guez de Balzac and Charles Coulomb) provided their assistance and enthusiasm to ensure the educational suitability of the digital products. Legal support was provided by Imag in Space, an organization that brings together small and medium-sized companies in the digital sector in Angoulême, and helps them to forge links with industrial groups. The Pôle Image Magélis in Angoulême is an economic development center for companies specializing in images, and has been helping small and medium-sized companies and their innovative projects for many years.
