Eco-design in camp sites constructions, amenities and rental accommodations 1. The Eco-camps project in a few words After Life Communication Plan Eco-camps is a European project aimed at experimenting eco-design methods which take into account environmental aspects of the design of indoor and outdoor living spaces in camp sites (buildings, leisure lodgings, amenities). Eco-camps has been co-funded by the European Commission through the LIFE Environment program. The Regional Council of Aquitaine is the beneficiary, the Regional Federation of Outdoor Hotel Industry of Aquitaine and the Scientific and Technical uilding Centre are partners. Five pilot camp sites and two leisure mobile home manufacturers have been selected to experiment and to adapt the HQE approach towards camp sites and eco-design methods for manufacturing. New technologies and methods Two tool kits have been developed and experimented within the Ecocamps project. A camp site tool kit enables building and amenity operators to use the HQE approach in outdoor hotel industry. STAGE 1 PROGRAMMING Operation s functional analysis STAGE 2 STUDIES AND PROJECT «Global cost» analysis STAGE 3 WORK SITE HQE report Definition of environmental profile Choice of environmental solutions performance monitoring sensitivity analysis engineering studies «Green work site» chart application The tool kit enables the utilisation of the 3 stages of the HQE approach.
The camp site tool kit is composed of : An environmental quality reference guide for the operation; An environmental management system for the operation; explanations for building and planning operators ; An environmental analysis grid for the building and amenity site. The builder tool kit method is based on the "life cycle assessment" plus qualitative criteria. STAGE 1 : ANALYSIS STAGE 2 : IMPROVEMENT Identification of environmental stakes Functional analysis data on products life cycle Inventory of possible solutions Choice and design of solutions Creation of environmental performance criteria for the choice of improvements Choice of environmental indicators Creation of an Eco-profile, technical and economical evaluation of solutions. Putting into practice. The tool-kit is composed of 20 practical sheets organised on the basis of the continuous improvement approach. Long term benefits and sustainability of results Evaluation of environmental impact of operations and pilot products from Eco-camps project enables to confirm the environmental benefits associated with the use of eco-design methods (HQE approach, functional analysis/simplified Life Cycle Assessment).

Each range of product is put on the market in September, the year before indicated. 2. The communication strategy of the Eco-camps project Communication actions from 2004 to 2007 Ac tions done and support used Website Result A user-friendly website with a specific graphical chart has been put on line at the beginning of the third year of the project. A lot of news was published during the second half of the project. Number of total hits on the site since started on line : nearly 5500 at the end of the project (average of 13 visitors per day). Number of subscriptions for the newsletter : About 250.
Newsletters Film 4 newsletters produced and diffused, using the graphical chart of the project. 2 camp sites (eau Rivage and Chevreuils) have created blogs in order to recount their works. A film has been produced under DVD format, using navigation via a menu. The film is available in several languages. Eco-camps : Wood and HQE approach Video sent by Ecocamps Collection of experiences A document presents the summary of the project s pilot experiments (40 pages in paper and electronic version) Characterized by a graphic chart of quality and very short presentations, this format will make it possible to edit new sheets for updating the project s information. It is published in several languages. Workshops Relations with media 5 workshops made it possible to present the project s experiences. 220 participants were targeted. 1 workshop took place in Spain, 4 workshops in France (two during national events and two during international events). These workshops permitted a direct contact with professional media, professionals from outdoor hotel industry, environment, tourism and building industries (and also increased the subscriptions to the newsletter). Number of classical press articles : About twelve Number of press releases : 2 Strength : a lot of different types of press were contacted (camp sites, general public, environment). 84 people participated in a special day for an Eco camps results European conference presentation 13 people participated in a trip organised by the CRA and the Eductour FRAHPA for visiting 2 pilot camp sites (Col d'ibardin and eau Rivage). On site information 5 roll-up panels presented the project s results at the final
panels conference and the ECORISMO show, and will eventually be presented on the pilot sites After Communication Plan Web site Animation of the Website Eco-camps: Dissemination of gathering experience Eco-camps (English and French) on Collection of experiences Publication and distribution via the website, new sheets for the next steps HQE conducted in the campsites Aquitaine.
