Expertise Blend utility with ingenuity. Add a dash of intuition. People The ide equation People + challenges + passion = Success
Method Where intuition meets DISCOVER BEHAVIOUR precision. HUMAN VALUES BUSINESS DELIVER MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY Approaching complex challenges Your product s story. What does it need to be a successful one? At ide we ve found that our dynamic approach to development teamed with some really creative insights along the way leads to positive outcomes for products, profits and people. With ide you ll experience a really thorough and flexible product development process, one that fully integrates our design, engineering and business skills.the foundation of our process is understanding your product s critical path from the market opportunity it serves, to the technology that drives it, to the people who ll use it. That s why we re committed to exploring each element that influences a product s design. And for every product, those elements are going to be different, so we also keep communication central to our process, making time to sketch, write, talk and, above all, listen. Every product is a new journey for ide and we re guided by our minds, hearts and gut feelings to surprising and unique ends. It s this novelty that keeps us open to new techniques and technologies, new ways of understanding the world and the people within it. Combining this expansive and intuitive view with disciplined and creative thinking, ide deliver robust and unique solutions every time. DESIGN DEVELOP

Expertise Making connections from experience. Bringing out the best in your product Being open to new ideas takes a special combination of knowledge and perspective. Playing it safe stifles creativity, but pushing the boundaries needs to happen within a sound framework. ide have the experience across a wide range of industries to make new, sometimes unlikely, connections while staying grounded in the practical details of manufacturing and delivery. By gathering the right information about your ideas and requirements, ide have the raw material for your future product. Then we draw on our experience of the everyday and the extraordinary to challenge assumptions and look at new angles, arriving at a shared vision. We examine every obstacle and opportunity, building towards an innovative and realistic product, consistent with that vision. Whether it s delivering a unit cost for a CEO to build a company on or convincing suppliers who say they can t, we thrive on taking advantage of the unexpected to ignite success. From giants of industry to tiny start-ups, from high volume products to one-off custom devices, from plastics to electronics and algorithms, this is the world where ide explore, apply and deliver peak returns for all our clients.
Project Taking great Client ResMed Product Pediatric Mask care. When size really matters It s not unusual for children to make do with a smaller version of something that s been designed for adult use. But when this has a negative outcome for the children involved, somebody has to step in. That s why ResMed approached ide for assistance in designing a better medical mask for providing therapy to children with sleep disordered breathing. ResMed had identified significant opportunities for optimising the performance over conventional pediatric masks, making a really compelling case for ResMed and ide to create the right design for the comfort of young patients.
People Design There S more Simply click on the image to read more on this person. for the real world. Your success depends on people Great design can grab headlines, win awards and make magazines look beautiful. But the best design makes a difference to people s lives, delivering great products and helping economies thrive. When you work with ide you re working with people who are curious and compassionate, people who love design because they love working with people. Our design team are committed to building authentic and productive relationships. We work hard to really understand the needs of your business and the people who ll be using your product. And once we see the challenge, we ll take it on as a personal endeavour, making it our goal to realise the full potential of your opportunity. ide people are collectors, we gather stimuli from our professional and personal experience to enrich the creative process. We re also a mixed bag, drawing together a portfolio of strengths from our diversity and united by a drive to understand. Together with versatile ways of thinking natural, lateral, logical and unexplained leaps our passion, empathy and openness define the ide experience.
View Point Huw Wallis Kevin Smith Eric Siu What is Function is a task the item is expected to perform, the heart of every piece of practical design. However, one cannot consider function without form. Function needs form in order to accomplish its goal, and function without form is just an empty piece of paper. Design ties form to function. form follows function a phrase coined by the American architect Louis Sullivan is often the principal associated with modern 20th century design. Put simply, the form something takes would be chosen based on its primary function and purpose. Function is what makes a design come together, whether you are referring to a product or an organization. Look and feel are important and you can have the best design, the coolest product, or the most talented team, but if the components can t function in a synchronized manner to achieve the desired result, the overall value is greatly diminished. Understanding how to make this happen is a game changer. I think function has multiple meanings, but in general I think it s derived from creating something with a purpose whatever it may be. It could be something that is physical and could be easily measured - how well a gear works or how much water can a vessel such as a cup hold? In other aspects its subjective - how does a piece of artwork evoke a particular emotion when viewed? In the latter case the purpose is not a physical nor conventionally a pragmatic one and is up to interpretation, however the roles of function underlying both purposes are still the same. function? Ian Johnson Function exists on a number of different levels. From pleasing our senses and satisfying our needs on a personal or emotional level like a piece of art, to the practical level i.e. does the product or object do what we want it to do does it fulfill our needs and do it effectively. Function is: usability, aesthetics, ergonomics, utility, touch, safety, operability, soul, manufacturability, sound, cost, performance, acceptance, meaning, form, materials, reliability, sight, emotion, smell, pleasure. Function is the embodiment of these characteristics. Function changes peoples lives. Melody Shiue Form follows function ; but it is more than a one-way process. Function is manifested in a product design which bridges the user to the form geometries. The existence of a function within a form transcends it from an object to a design ; and vice versa the form dictates how the user perceives and handles the product George Sidis A product s function depends on your point of view. Whether a raw materials provider, an investor, manufacturer, distributor or the end user, a product (and it s design) serves a purpose for everyone in a product s lifecycle and beyond. And a truly functional product performs beyond expectations from all points of view. Ernesto Hueso Richard Sokolov Alison Norcott Dorte Bell Johannes Behrisch Kamman Law Function is silent when successful. Function is painfully obvious when it is not present. Function is how the user expects a product to behave and operate. It is the unsaid contract between an object and the user, and it is the designer s job to make that happen seamlessly. Well designed function is not only operation but intuitive operation, is not only mechanics but trouble free and reliable mechanics,. Function is not only fit for use but comfortable and inviting, is not only easy to use but endearing and connecting. Function is the quality of a well designed product to make our world a better place. Making expectation and experience one in the same. Function is what gives objects and design a purpose. A design must function, and function well for the designer to be able to say they have succeeded. It is possible for a product to be functional without being especially useful or fulfilling the needs of the user. For example, a bicycle that rides brilliantly but has no seat is not meeting all the rider s needs. It is critical that designers carefully align the function of a design with the needs of the user for a design to be deemed successful. Function refers to the purpose of a product - the expected outcome that product will enable you to achieve e.g. a kettle is expected to boil water. Function is also how something works in order to deliver that outcome. In the case of the kettle, the heating element, electronics and housing all function together to enable the kettle to boil water. For a successful product, the purpose-function needs to be clearly identified and the how-function well resolved. My view on the terminology function is that it describes what people want from things they acquire. Facilitating function in the products we develop is the goal of our design activities. What function means in each individual context can be very different. It ranges from aspects that can be measured and described in a quantitative, objective way to aspects that represent completely subjective qualities. Good design acknowledges this entire spectrum of functionality and intentionally shapes quantitative and qualitative object properties taking their interdependence into account. To understand and translate our clients needs into a physical product, a solution that would satisfy what is outlined and to exceed their expectation. All aspects of the product must be considered, in terms of its aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, function, marketability and ease of production. It is then the role of a product developer to make sure all facets of this have been considered and all potential issues have been resolved.
