1 Update your design knowledge IDEMC Master Classes for Design Professionals Edition 2018
2 IDEMC 2018 In 2013, we launched the first series of IDE Master Classes. This successful first series was followed by 4 equally inspiring series. All the Master Classes in each series have been well attended and evaluated extremely positively. In total, about 300 different participants from more than 180 companies have attended the four series. The level of interest expressed by participants in new topics has given us more than enough reasons for hosting this sixth series, starting in March What are IDE Master Classes? IDE Master Classes are a series of intensive two-day, state-of-the-art Master Classes developed specifically for design professionals. They are embedded within one of the world s most forward-thinking design education programmes at TU Delft s faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. The Master Classes are given by leaders in the design field, all of them top lecturers or alumni from the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, working in a range of disciplines of the continuously developing design field. Why participate in IDE Master Classes? The IDE Master Classes programme was developed to support the professional development of design practitioners. In groups of 10 to 16 participants, you gain insights into recent developments in the discipline, learning about the latest methods and tools currently being taught to new generations of designers. For many of you working in the field of design, this has proved an extremely effective way to refine your skills, focus your ambition, and/or simply broaden your mind and be inspired! Each Master Class combines theory with interactive assignments and group cases: you directly apply what you learn. This is a great way of meeting the experts and working with other experienced designers, expanding your network, and creating new opportunities. Learn from the experts as well as from each other! Fees per Master Class members of BNO, Design Management Network, KIVI IO & Human Factors NL 750 for IDE alumni Courses are VAT-free. Lunch, drinks, material and a book on the topic are included. Reduction: 100 for each additional Master Class Additional information Location: Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering in Delft Language: English Registration Visit our website for the latest updates on the programme, and to register for one or more IDE Master Classes. ide.tudelft.nl/masterclasses

Getting everyone on the same page in an open and trustful atmosphere of creative collaboration demands special care and attention. The concept of Validated Learning was launched by Eric Ries in his book The Lean Startup. The book has become is a sort of bible for a lot of startups and corporate ventures, and the concept of Validated Learning has become the foundation for many successes. Now it s time for innovators to massively pick up this valuable method. Throwing ideas about in a quick brainstorm Build, Measure, Learn is the mantra of this session is often based on memory and iterative process, in which hypotheses and logic, and with the right experts, this often experiments play the main roles. The goal is to does the trick. However, when facing more quickly learn what the product should be like to complex design issues, or in cases where best appeal to users. shared understanding is required, Creative Facilitation adds extra value when addressing This Masterclass combines theory and practice these issues. The result is a strategically solid approach to innovation that puts human values at the heart of the organization. IDEMC 4 June Material Driven Design Designing for material experiences with a material as starting point > Elvin Karana, Associate Professor Material Driven Design, IDE, TU Delft Materials research is constantly evolving, leading to novel, superior materials like bio-based plastics, piezoelectric textiles, and temperature sensitive polymers. The potential experiences of these unfamiliar, unusual and novel emerging materials are often challenging to envision and design for. Material Driven Design (MDD) supports the This holistic approach to product and service design of meaningful material applications innovation is based on 4 consecutive phases: with the material as a point of departure. gathering customer insights, building a Designers qualify the material not only for focused innovation strategy, designing a what it is, but also for what it does, what it desirable customer experience, and lastly, expresses to us, what it elicits from us, and embedding the resulting experience. what it makes us do. 5 IDEMC 5 September Design for Emotion and Happiness Identifying and designing for enjoyable and meaningful experiences > Pieter Desmet, Professor Design for Experience, IDE, TU Delft > Anna Pohlmeyer, Assistant Professor Design for Happiness, IDE, TU Delft Emotions are fundamental to all design acquired and consumed by people. This includes emotions experienced in response to seeing, buying, using and owning consumer goods. Moreover, design has the ability to enable long-term happiness. This MC hosts a mixture of (interactive) tutorials and workshops covering a selection of aspects of design related to emotion and for happiness, including theory, measurement, and practice. Design approaches are introduced that are embedded in theory whilst remaining pragmatic and usable for designers. Participants deepen their knowledge of how product design elicits emotions, and of the influence of design on happiness. They gain hands-on experience by formulating design intentions that include emotional and happiness effects. During this Master Class, you will: understand what emotions are and how design evokes emotions; understand how design can contribute to user well-being; use tools and techniques to implement emotion and wellbeing in design processes. Pieter Desmet and Anna Pohlmeyer are co-directors of the Delft Institute of Positive Design ( at the faculty of IDE, TU Delft. Together, they are much published, with over 100 articles and book chapters in the fields of experience design, emotion, and subjective well-being. More about Pieter Desmet and Anna Pohlmeyer and the IDE Master Class can be found on our website: IDEMC 6 October Design Visualization Strategies and techniques for sketching and concept representation > JanWillem Hoftijzer, Coordinator Design Sketching and Visualization, IDE, TU Delft Design proposals, no matter what kind, can only be evaluated if they have been visually clarified. Sketches help to externalize ideas and to communicate with all the stakeholders involved in a design project: partners, users and clients. In general, visual representations form the integrative language for design. Sketches and visuals can take different forms and have different functions, depending on the design stage and related communication requirements. The variety of ways how to visualize within the domain of industrial design is extensive. This Master Class addresses the visual exploration of strategies, sketches of objects, shapes and 3D scenes, story-telling, visual thinking, and data representation, all of which are built on a clear methodological framework. During this Master Class, you will learn: to apply the various types of sketching and visualization techniques, as part of a design process; how to support design thinking with visual thinking; how to understand and communicate form and meaning in design; to apply different techniques, tools and materials; how you can integrate design visualization in your daily practice. JanWillem Hoftijzer spent several years working as a product designer. Today, he teaches design drawing and coordinates staff at the faculty of IDE. Other members of the Master Class team, are Susie Brand, Joost Kuipers, Mark Sypesteyn and Martijn Haans. More about JanWillem Hoftijzer and IDE Master Class can be found on our website:
6 IDEMC 7 November Design for the Circular Economy Understanding the complexities of designing for a circular economy > Conny Bakker, Professor Design for Sustainability and Circular Economy, IDE, TUD > Bas Flipsen, Senior lecturer, Design for Sustainability and Circular Economy, IDE, TUD International companies see the move towards a circular and sustainable economy as a complex but necessary challenge. This Master Class helps you understand this thinking and the role you can play in responding to this challenge. The potential of the MDD method to be used as a creative tool for exploring a new/old material, was particularly interesting. Participant IDEMC Material Driven Design I used these tools in practice right away Participant IDEMC Creative Facilitation The Master Class hosts a mixture of interactive tutorials and workshops with the aim of plunging you into the theory and practice of designing for a circular economy. The decision to embed circular economy principles is a strategic business decision; this has a huge impact on the way products are developed and designed. The MC addresses the social and technical implications for product design using examples from practice, and provides design approaches that are embedded in theory whilst being pragmatic and usable for designers. During this Master Class, you will: understand the systems-perspective needed for the transition to a circular economy; understand how design can contribute to a circular & sustainable economy; use tools and techniques to implement circular economy principles in design processes; reflect on ways to overcome the barriers for going circular. Conny Bakker explores strategies to design for the circular economy and the business models that enable these. Bas Flipsen focusses on sustainability from a pragmatic point of view and analyses product service systems with quantitative in-house developed tools. More about Conny Bakker and Bas Flipsen and the IDE Master Class can be found on our website: It will help to create more customer awareness within the various departments, which in the end will improve the alignment of individual goals. Participant IDEMC Customer Experience Innovation It gave me a different insight into the design process to indentify key criteria. I think that opening the borders was, for me, the most valuable aspect. Participant IDEMC Design for Emotion and Happiness
