1 Highlights Social Innovation Festival 2014 ober 10-19, 2014 Tentative Programme Summary Programme/ Event Description Date Interest Festival Opening: Cooking for Good International Gender Design Conference Asian Consortium: Network Conference Asian Consortium: Changemakers Party Asian Consortium Site Visits Maker Faire Fly to the Sky Installation Local chefs along with members of disadvantage groups will demonstrate how less than perfect ingredients can be salvaged and transformed into a more than perfect feast for social good. The opening shows how private kitchens are a key site for social innovation: together we can reduce food waste, eat well, and fight income and food inequity. The two-day conference, consisting of keynotes, breakout sessions and workshops, will reexamine gender s role in design research, thinking, professional practice and public reception. Asian Social Innovation Consortium brings together young professionals who share a passion for social innovation and institutional representatives in the field. Presenters will engage each other, their institutions and the latest exciting projects of their like-minded counterparts from all over Asia. A chance for the Consortium members to network and learn about Hong Kong s social enterprises in an outdoor party setting against the backdrop of Hong Kong s spectacular skyline. Hong Kong hosts will take our Asian consortium members for tours of the real Hong Kong, in which they will explore the extent to which social innovation can make a difference. They are encouraged to enrich the Asian experience by comparing the Hong Kong context with that of their home. Typically out of the spotlight of traditional art or science or craft events, Maker Faire is a hands-on gathering for fellow Makers to make something for fun and a social purpose. Enlisting the public s help, designers Stickyline will build a giant folded paper installation held in suspension by helium balloon

2 Highlights Truck Installation A repurposed vehicle to draw the campus community to our ten-day festivities and exhibition at the Jockey Club Innovation Tower. Thinker Lecture: Living out of the Contradiction of Time As J.C.DISI s second thinker-in-residence, prominent cultural pioneer Chan Koonchung will give a Public Lecture on Social Innovation and the Good Society. 11 The Happy Summit The Happy Summit will invite international social innovators to Hong Kong in order to initiate a conversation that redefines happiness and well-being amid the challenges and diversities in the world. 12 Changemakers Cinema Five documentary film screenings spanning many issues of public concern, such as gender, public health, ageing, food support, food waste, and enabling technologies Dean s Salon A supportive and stimulating academic forum in which postgraduate students will share the fruits and challenges in their researches related to design for society. 13- Glo/cal Seminar Every year, the Festival invites a researcher on social innovation to Hong Kong to speak about the lessons drawn from overseas experience. This year, we invite the representative from Swedish Social Innovation Forum to talk. 17- Social Enterprise Clinic In a two-week series of focus groups, consultations with VIPs, pitch sessions, and designer s proposals, social enterprises will be able to enlist talents from both business and design fields and receive a design proposal as a result. 17- Street Performance Music is an important source of inspiration and often a catalyst for social changes. From the afternoon till dusk, street performance this year features young, independent songwriters and musicians. They enliven the campus and remove the fourth wall. 11-2

Delta Four " Design for Well-being Award Dare to Care T-shirt Design Dao Gives Birth to One - Interactive Animation of China Literatures International Showcase: The Central Academy of Fine Arts, The University of Technology, Sydney, and INDEX: Design to Improve Life J.C.DISI Project Showcase Description A showcase of gender-sensitive and genderinsensitive designs, a companion exhibition to the international Gender Design Conference Neighboring the Cross-Harbour Tunnel with very heavy traffic, PolyU proposes a Green Deck over the tunnel plaza for future development. This exhibition will communicate to the public the ideas researches behind this bold future envisioned for the community and higher education. The literature exhibition displays book chapters, papers, reports which addresses social innovation in its original form. An exhibition to recapture Four repurposed DETOUR tramcars - Eatery, Classroom, Blackbox, and Music Box Four telephone booths to showcase four short movies which are first screening in Hong Kong, SAR², Connection, Rest is Pending and Over The Wall. The award aims to acknowledge, celebrate, promote and inspire creative solutions that improve well-being and healthy living in contemporary Asian and Western Pacific cities. The finalist entries in three competition categories will be exhibited. A T-shirt Design taught by communication designers was held at the Lo Wu Correctional Facility. The female inmates designs are exhibited. A flipbook of artwork and an interactive video clip from International Animation of China will be exhibited. Three prestigious institutions, the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Technology, Sydney, and INDEX: Design to Improve Life, will send their traveling exhibitions to Hong Kong. An exhibition offerings the updates on the projects undertaken by J.C.DISI and the social impacts they are making. Period Inquire for a tour 3

4 Community Photography Exhibition Street Life, Hong Kong Photo Exhibition Jockey Club Design for Student Award Voice Discovery An exhibition of student photographic works to articulate the roles of local neighbourhood and benevolent organizations that have been building communities since the post-war period. Photographic works by Michael Perrini and captions from Nicole Chabot from their new book Street Life, Hong Kong. Outdoor workers in their own words will be exhibited. The author and photographer will sign their book that documents the often seen but invisible outdoor workers. In its second year, this award encourages students to apply their design and knowledge to address social issues. The award winners will exhibit their works at the Festival. A photographic exhibition provoking reflections on poverty and marginalized groups. 4

5 s Description Date Interest Paper Folding Installation (by Stickyline) A origami workshop to fold and crease paper and put them together in order to produce a massive installation for the Festival Aug & Sept Dao Gives Birth to One (by Hung Keung) Interactive Animation of China Literatures presents an experiential workshop to understand the value of design and technology. 6-7 Sept O-Farm (Yip Tsz Shing) A permaculture workshop offers a farming experience with local farmers in the middle of the city Design for The Silver Age: Co-creation Design SD Maker DEMO Co-creation involves users and stakeholders early on in the design process so designers come up with a solutions for the real world. This year, we will continue to hold a Cocreation design workshop with the elderly and develop a reminder system and remote control device for the silver age market. Besides their official capacity to assist teaching and research, School of Design technicians are also able woodwork craftsman, photographer, model maker, and book binder in our midst. They will share their adroitness and experience they have mastered in workshops open to the general public Knitting (by Lizzie Bee) Knitting for the public and underprivileged groups 12- Playright for Parents & Children (by Potato Yu) Raise the awareness on inclusive playground design for kids by creating a play space 12- Playright for Students (by Chris Yuen) A toy design workshop to raise awareness on inclusive playground design for students 13- Playright for Professionals (by Chris Yuen) A toy Design workshop to raise awareness on inclusive playground design for designers 14- Voice Discovery (by Margaux) An experiential workshop created by a group of PolyU students to raise awareness on local poverty 14- Maker Jam A 48-hours 3D-printing design contest that aims to prototype innovative products for the health and medical fields Maker Faire A number of designers will give more than a dozen Maker workshops, such as soap making, leather keychain making, and 3D printing.
