Industry Overview The Wave Energy Industry is poorly co-ordinated. At present, all teams are working independently and commercial considerations force them to keep their ideas secret. There remains a lack of investor confidence and hence industrial support for the industry. Teams tend to be relatively small working out of University Departments or SMEs with some industrial backing. No major technological barriers to the development of Wave Energy Prototypes have been identified. All the issues raised under design, construction, deployment and operation can be addressed by transfer of technology from other industries, especially the offshore industry. However, costs, risks and approvals will need to be addressed. However, some technology gaps have been identified, notably in the areas of mooring and cable connections detailing, hydraulic machines and grid connection and energy storage. 12

Potential Development Timeline (2001) 14

The 4-part wave energy convertor Thing that interacts with waves Thing that makes electricity Thing that reacts power out of wave Thing that keeps it in place 15

the thing that interacts with the waves unique? 16

the thing that makes electricity everyone needs one The industry is trying to solve the same problem over and over again This costs time and lots of money it is not a good investment We need to change the way we approach industry enabling challenges 17

Does academic research help? Too many idealised assumptions of little practical use for example Monochromatic waves easy to model but of no value. Heaving buoy research Stop looking at concepts that can never be commercial (just because they are simple to model). Focus research on enhancing concepts that work and offer a path forward More focus on real world issues: Designing for survivability - wave & structure loading, material research Development of models for PTO, O&M, availability, FMECA, cost, CFD Technology development e.g. condition monitoring More research on assessing, understanding and modelling waves and the nearshore environment 18

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." - Albert Einstein 19

A New Direction Real co-ordination between government, the various government and grant funding bodies, academia and industry An integrated pan-industry approach to solving the key technology issues we tried it the other way and it did not work! A roadmap plan to deliver And all with minimal red-tape and political agenda Result a wave industry 20
