1 The International Institute of Marine Surveying News Bulletin September 2014 Dear Member Welcome to this News Bulletin from the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS). This bulletin is available in PDF format from the IIMS website. It aims to keep members and non members up to date with information on a monthly basis. Members are encouraged to share and forward this newsletter to colleagues, who they think might like to join the Institute. For more information about the Institute visit: IIMS launches LinkedIn discussion group The IIMS has started an online LinkedIn discussion group. The aim is to set topics for discussion on a regular basis covering all aspects of marine surveying and associated areas. The first topic on enclosed spaces brought some very lively debate. Anyone in the group can contribute, or start a new thread, even if just seeking advice from others. The group discussion will not be heavily regulated and a simple set of rules and etiquette has been published that group members are expected to abide by. Click to see and join the IIMS LinkedIn group.
2 MSA kicks off the new RMCI standard and qualification After a couple of years development and planning work, the Marine Surveying Academy (MSA), the training arm of the IIMS, is about to kick off the pilot course for the new Registered Marine Coatings Inspectors (RMCI) standard and qualification. Course tuition is being provided by Peter Morgan (IIMS past President) and others. The RMCI qualification was instigated by the Super Yacht Builders Association (SYBAss) in conjunction with the International Confederation of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) and working with the International Institute of Marine Surveyors (IIMS) and the Institute of Corrosion (ICorr). SYBAss members, the paint companies, ship yards and coating facilities worldwide will only accept inspectors into their facilities who have this qualification in time. The RMCI course is a week long training programme including a half day written examination. The pilot course is being run for the benefit of the RMCI stakeholders from 8-12 September at Portchester. The first live course is scheduled to take place from October at the Historic Dockyard, Portsmouth. For more information see the RMCI web site. The qualification is jointly certificated by IIMS and ICorr. The Report September issue set to publish The finishing touches are being put to the September issue of The Report magazine. Look out for the link to read your Institute s magazine online or by PDF coming to you later this month. As well as the usual mix of news and member information, there are some interesting articles to look out for and to read. One of the key feature articles is about the problems marine surveyors are faced with when working in enclosed spaces. We also conclude Part II about the shipbreaking industry in Pakistan. And IIMS India Regional Director, Milind Tambe, has written a fascinating article about the potential pitfalls associated with taking and keeping digital photographs should they later be required as evidence. Finally, we have commissioned a special article to provide some tips for report writing and to remind members the importance of getting it right first time to ensure they stay as well protected as possible from potential legal action in the event something goes wrong.
3 IIMS YouTube channel launched If you missed notification in last month s News Bulletin, or have not yet had the chance to check it out for yourself, IIMS has set up its own YouTube channel. Fourteen of the presentations from the June IIMS Conference were recorded and are now available to be watched online at the our new YouTube channel along with a couple of video on the use of moisture meters. We aim to increase the video content going forward and will notify members when any new content becomes available to view. Our YouTube channel is called Marine Surveying IIMS. Use this link to access the videos. IBEX show Tampa, Florida 30 September to 2 October The International Boatbuilders Exhibition and Conference, IBEX for short, is taking place in Tampa USA from 30 September to 2 October. UK Small Craft Working Group September meeting The next UK SCWG meeting will take place on 22 September starting at 10.00am. The venue is Grafham Water Sailing Club, Huntingdon, near Cambridge. The morning session will feature a presentation by the ever popular Jeffrey Casciani-Wood entitled The Preliminary Design and the Survey of Propellers. After lunch, a group visit has been arranged to nearby Clements Engineering works to see where propellers are both manufactured and repaired. The cost of this meeting including lunch is just 50 per person. To reserve your place please ca@iims.org.uk or call Carol Allen on IIMS plans to participate with a booth space along with 500 plus exhibitors at the annual event. This year s show will be held in the Tampa Convention Center, Tampa, Florida. This truly huge and must do event is presented for Marine Professionals only with over fifty varied training seminars ranging from Infusing a Carbon Fiber Hull, Practical Application of Global Compliance to Interfacing, Alarming and Logging Engine Data with many subjects in between. This is quite the place to be seen to help you stay ahead of the game. Looking forward hopefully to seeing a Graphfene exhibit-a two dimension coating (yes two dimension) to which nothing should stick no matter what the adhesive - no marine growth. Last year we learned about carbon nano cells and silver plate batteries that are infinitely rechargeable as there is no chemical reaction. The staffed IIMS booth will be #544 and all members are invited to participate. If you would like to attend please contact James Renn at or maritimeprofgroup@gmail.com Click here for more show information.

5 Advanced Maritime Security Masterclass Mike Chen will be conducting a 2 day Advanced Maritime Security Masterclass on 7-8 October 2014 in Singapore. This is meant for people with some knowledge of the ISPS Code. The focus is to update the participants with new guidelines, best practices and there will be some hands-on sessions on MarSec risk assessment and audit issues. These are the contemporary challenges confronting ships and port facilities operators, management and owners today. The course is subsidised by the Maritime Cluster Fund (MCF) for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. The subsidy is 70% of Course Fees (less GST) based on reimbursement arrangement. IIMS members are offered a 10% discount if registered before 15 September Please register your participation with Ms Zuriani at zuriani@stei.edu.sg or (+65) / (+65) Sam Legg departs New Zealand branch meeting The IIMS New Zealand branch Cargo and Nautical Surveyors Working Group met on 18 August for one of their regular get togethers. The group covered a number of topics, including sending their best wishes to Rick Brown at Spill Response Ltd who is facing a serious health problem. They also discussed port safety, the matter of Chinese trade fraud and issues involving reefer containers too. Chairman, Steve Moyle, has recommended reading Talkback, a pdf e-magazine published for surveyors by The North of England P&I Club. The current edition has an interesting article on steel surveys and also on whether surveyors are suitably experienced for particular surveys or not. The pdf can be downloaded here: publications-and-guides/talkback.php We are sad to report that after a short stay as IIMS Administrator, Sam Legg has moved on - not to pastures new, but back to her previous employer, IBM in Portsmouth. We wish her well. Contact the IIMS Head Office team As always, the IIMS head office team are here to help you on any matters relating to your membership or education needs.
