7 Program For the first two years the course was split in two months of courses at the UPG (University of gas and petroleum) with UPG s professors The average course lasted for one week, but some of them were shorter or lengthier. 8 Program And two months at the well site which were divided into: 2 weeks at the wellsite and 2 weeks resting or office time

9 Outcomes and feedbacks for the courses Best courses were done by trainers with some practical experience beside the theoretical knowledge Many were too theoretical and lack a connection with the practical experience Everybody passed the exams

10 Outcomes and feedbacks wellsite In some cases there was an initial fear that young engineers will be a near future replacement for senior supervisors, but it was not the case The collaboration was useful for both parts dividing the tasks and exchanging knowledge The tasks for young engineers grew over time in complexity until little assistance was necessary for most given tasks. The key for success is reciprocal altruism, desire for self improvement and the sense of responsibility for any tasks at hand At the of end of the shift the senior drilling supervisor would describe the activity of the junior DSVs and evaluate their activity

11 The last year After two years the courses ended with a graduation thesis which was passed by all trainees. It was followed by one whole year at the rig site for training purposes

12 What is the current status of the graduates? 5 of us at the office The rest are drilling supervisors working in pairs with senior supervisors, with colleagues or other junior drilling supervisors.

13 Responsibilities and KPI s The DSVs are responsible to finishing drilling the wells in safe conditions and that the real operations to reflect the planned one regarding quality, drilling time, drilling cost. The KPI reflect the level of these achievement

15 New Well Academy - Feedbacks 2 course modules in Vienna for 2.5 months, 2 course modules in Romania for 2.5 months, 1 month IGD and 1 month for Well Academy project In between courses around 2-3 months at wellsite. More courses with people with practical and planning experience Some negative feedbacks for UPG trainers regarding spoken English and presentation format which required changes in the trainers UPG trainers best fitted for theoretical courses (physics, chemistry, etc) Modules too long which affect the trainees learning capabilities

16 Conclusions The pilot Well Academy seems to be a success in terms of quantitative help (i.e number of DSVs) The qualitative help was provided by the English knowledge for the daily drilling reports and computer knowledge. The real value will be seen in the long from the level of satisfaction of both the company and the DSVs Most of the lessons learnt from pilot Well Academy were included in the next one

17 Recommendations More courses with people with rig site or planning experience (implemented in the new Well Academy ) Increase time for some important courses Include other courses (i.e borehole stability, coring which was included in new Well Academy) After coming from the wellsite the junior DSVs to spend some time in the office to get and to give feedback (also true for new Well Academy)
