3 ENGINEERS WEEK Engineers Week is a week-long festival of nationwide events celebrating the world of Engineering in Ireland. From spaceships to ice skates, bubbles in chocolate bars, to life saving cancer treatment - Engineering touches every part of our lives. However, not enough young people especially young girls - think it s a world for them. As a result, the industry is struggling to recruit future talent. What s more, young people are missing out on the chance to make a positive difference to both their futures, that of the planet and everything that calls it home. 4 LETTER TO PARENTS Dear Parents and Guardians, Engineers week is coming, celebrate with us from March 2-8! Engineers Week is a nationwide campaign to raise the profile of engineering and showcase the opportunities in a dynamic industry. Coordinated by the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, the week is an opportunity for the community to celebrate the contribution of engineering through hundreds of events. Engineering is a rewarding and diverse career choice and currently the demand for talent outweighs supply. A survey conducted by Engineers Ireland outlines that over 6,000 new engineering jobs are planned for next year alone. It s important that young people have positive and engaging experiences with STEM, access to role models and develop necessary skills to foster a problem solving and innovative society. How to get involved? Download fun engineering challenges to execute at home. Visit Show the award winning Engineering Documentary: Dream Big which can be streamed on Netflix! Family events are running throughout Ireland during the week Share your updates on social media #EngWeek19 Are you an engineer? Organise an event in your local community! 7 ENGINEERING CHALLENGES St. Patricks Recycled Cardbard Chair Challenge St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and Engineers! Challenge your students and teach them about Engineering principles of design, collaboration, and problem solving through this Cardboard Chair Challenge. 8 GEODESIC DOMES ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 01 Designed by Hannah, Design engineer at Dyson The brief Using gumdrops and toothpicks, make your own geodesic dome. The method Follow steps 1 6 in the diagram below. Key for cocktail sticks: 2.5in 2in Materials Toothpicks: 35 at 2.5in long and 30 cut down to 2in long Gumdrops Scissors (with adult supervision) How does it work? Geodesic domes are extremely rigid. Multiple interlocking triangles form incredibly strong structures. To deform or buckle a triangle you have to compress or stretch the lengths of the sides, which is hard to do as they support each other. Design icons Richard Buckminster Fuller, inventor of the geodesic dome. He was inspired by beehives, fishing nets and other networks. 9 SPAGHETTI BRIDGES ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 03 Designed by Kristian, Design engineer at Dyson The brief Construct a free standing bridge out of spaghetti, strong enough to support a 1/2lb bag of sugar. The method Think about bracing strands together for strength. Some shapes are better at absorbing loads triangles are particularly strong. Rubber bands make for good junctions. Materials Spaghetti Small rubber bands or bag ties Tape 1/2lb bag of sugar Top tip Be patient. Through trial and error, you ll become proficient at working with spaghetti. Rubber bands How does it work? Bridges manage two important forces: compression and tension pushing and pulling. Too much of either and they buckle or snap. 10 HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENGINEERS Chemical Engineers develop ways to make products on a large scale. Mechanical Engineers design things that have moving parts Examples: Processed food (like chocolate), medicines, detergents, shampoo, make up. Famous Example: Hair dye Biomedical Engineers develop technologies and equipment to help save lives and improve health Examples: X-Ray machines, MRI, artificial knee, artificial tissue, pacemaker Famous Example: Blade runner Examples: Airplanes, cars, electric cars, rollercoasters, robots, turbines Famous Example: Apollo 11: landed on the Moon Software engineers design apps and programs that we use on our computers and phones. Examples: Apps like Instagram, programs like Microsoft Word, videogames Famous Example: Facebook Electronic Engineers design ways to make use of electricity on the small scale on tiny circuit boards Civil engineers design lots of ways to make our life easier and safer. 19 TOM PARSONS The skills developed on the sports field have been vital to building a successful career in engineering Tom Parsons, Chartered Engineer working in civil engineering at Jacobs The Mayo senior football vice-captain, currently recovering from a knee injury, said: For 30 to 40 hours of my week, I am a professional athlete focused on training, recovery, diet, video analysis, workshops amongst other things; then, for the other half of the week, I am a professional engineer. All those attributes that are critical in sport, such as resilience, effective communications, flexibility, time-management and of course passion, are equally vital to becoming an effective and dynamic engineer. Like athletes, engineers have unique abilities to push boundaries and overcome great challenges, and so I m delighted to support Engineers Week and I urge schools, families, and students across the country to support what is now a vital annual event in the engineering calendar. 20 ENGINEERING THROUGH MUSIC ORLA MURPHY Engineering Quality Transformation Manager at Jaguar Land Rover Growing up, engineering wasn t even on my radar, but I loved maths, physics and music. I couldn t decide what I wanted to be. It wasn t until the discovery of an engineering course that was a third maths, a third physics and a third music that I had that eureka moment of that s what I want to do with my life and I ve never looked back. Engineering is so diverse and varied, and I m thrilled to support Engineers Week 2019 as an Engineering Superhero Ambassador and I look forward to inspiring students to explore the limitless opportunities a career in the area offers. I really enjoy solving problems, and I like the fact that my job is constantly evolving with new technology.
