Alena Bartonova, , 23 rd EIONET workshop Prague Use of sensors for air quality assessment: possibilities and challenges Alena Bartoňová, Núria Castell, Augustin Collette, Laure Malherbe, Philipp Schneider, Mar Viana, Marita Voogt, Ernie Weijers, Joost Wesseling
Outline Reflection on assessments from monitoring/measurement point ot view Challenges and opportunities Possible way forward
Why assessments? Monitoring/measurement technology and QA/QC reflect the purpose of assessment: Compliance with legislation (comparability of data across a region) Scientific research Other purpose (information needs, citizen science)

Low cost sensors: opportunities The monitoring unit is «low cost» compared to reference instruments > potential for large deployment For publikum: «plug and play», «do it yourself» kits
Low cost sensors: challenges Quality of output and data interpretation Connectivity and upscaling
Quality of output Large deployments require smart calibration
Quality of output: Lab and field calibration Source: Fishbain et al (2017), Sci Tot Env 571 ( ) Source: NILU Source: Kitzel et al (2018), Environ Pollut 233( ), figure D. Broday
Quality of output: Machine learning Source: Topalovic et al., in review for Atmospheric Environment
Data interpretation Sensor system unit is not a miniature reference station (low public literacy in metrology) Siting: natural variability and large gradients of air quality within an urban area Strenght is in numbers: the network 15

NL: National portal samenmeten.rivm.nl Sensor data portal (in Dutch) In December 2017, RIVM has launched an experimental sensor data portal. The goal is to make environmental sensor data from citizens, local governments and others in the Netherlands available through a central database. In this experimental phase RIVM uses the data for several research topics, for example developing on the fly calibration algorithms, assimilating sensor data in hourly air quality maps and testing data visualizations for citizen scientists.
The US EPA Office for Research and Development Reserach on emerging technologies (discovery, evaluation, application) Air sensor toolbox (guidance and guidebooks, technical evaluation of sensors, individual an community training, resources on sensor performance, news) also input from JRC Application challenges Support to citizen science/local activities
In summary: Tasks involved in large scale deployment of sensor systems The flow of tasks includes: Deployment of (large number of heterogeneous) sensor systems Ensuring communication and data harvesting Ensuring quality of data, including correctness of observations Ensuring access to data and their connectivity Providing information in an appropriate way Developing appropriate action on the information. after Morawska et al., 2018, Environ Int.
In summary: Main application areas Awareness and engagement (now) Small scale pilots: living labs Information solutions for UTD information: Sensor network & modeling: local information (near future) Possible complement to monitoring systems (less near future)
