I am very glad to note that interactive seminars, workshops, Documentary, Paper Presentations at various engineering colleges, Technical Quiz and Social Welfare activities conducted. I heartily congratulate the students of ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING for their initiative in participating in a variety of activities and bring up this newsletter. Creativity comes from trust. 5 ELECTRICAL&ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering was started in the year 1998 with an intake of 40 students. At present there is an intake of 180 students. The department was accredited by NBA Committee of AICTE in the year 2009, which was a great achievement in the department s history. The department offers PG programs, M. Tech in Power System Control & Automation form the year 2010, and Power Systems from the year 2011, and Power Electronics & Power Systems from the year The department has highly qualified and experienced eminent Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant professors headed by Dr.B.Venkata Prasanth. Two PhD Scholars Received their PhD Degree Under his Guidance and also Guiding Eight Research Scholars from Various Reputed Universities. Most of the faculty members are registered for their Ph.D at various universities and are actively pursuing their research work. The teaching faculty is active in conducting research activities. Infrastructure The department has good infrastructural facilities and is equipped with fullfledged laboratories which include Engineering workshop, production technology, metallurgy and instrumentation, fluid mechanics and hydraulic machinery, thermal engineering, heat transfer, machine tools and metrology, mechanics of solids, simulation and machine dynamics. These laboratories not only cater the needs of under graduate and post graduate program me but also are adequate to carry out active research in the entire allied field. The department has audio visual facilities with LCD and OHP s for effective teaching. Excellent teaching and learning environment will be achieved by focusing attention on scientific assessment of results, presides continuing education, encouraging, conducting and participating in seminars, conferences, workshops etc..., Students of our department actively participate in national-level paper contests being organized at IIT s, NIT s and various other Engineering colleges. Some of them have also been awarded in these paper contests. The department has been organizing technical symposium ELECTROQUEST at national level from 2008 onwards. To make the Students Ready enough to succeed in a Rapidly Changing World by providing Necessary skills To build up moral and Ethical Values among the Students To Provide Opportunities for all students to become Active life- long learners Inspiration Column Charles William Siemens: Charles William Siemens (ne: Carl Wilhelm Siemens, b. Lenthe, Germany, 4th April 1823, d. London, England, 9th November 1883) was a pioneer in the practical application of scientific discoveries to industrial processes. The SI unit of electrical conductance was named after him as the Siemens (S). Christian Ferdinand Siemens, a wealthy farmer, and his wife, Eleonore Deichmann had eleven sons and three daughters, of whom Charles William was the seventh child. In July 1839, Eleonore died. Unable to bear this loss, Ferdinand died six months later. A few years later, the children were dispersed among relations and friends. Siemens went to England in Being a shrewd businessman, he sold the patent of the electroplating invention of his elder brother, Werner. William was naturalised as a British subject on the 19th of March On the 23rd of July he same year, he married Anne Gordon. Siemens Brothers, founded in 1865 by William and Werner, soon became a worldfamous manufacturer of telegraphic equipment, cables, dynamos and lighting equipment. William was a member of the Society of Telegraph Engineers; the British Association, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and a fellow of the Royal Society. He developed a highly successful meter for measuring water consumption. His important invention of the regenerative gas furnace and its application to open-hearth steel making and other industrial processes made him independently wealthy before In 1874, he designed the cable ship 'Faraday' and assisted in the laying of the first of several transatlantic cables. During the last 15 years of his life he actively supported the development of the engineering profession and stimulated public interest in the reduction of air pollution and the potential value of electric power in a wide variety of engineering applications. Suffering an acute pain in the region of the heart for a few weeks, he was attacked by a difficulty of breathing. As he was sitting in his arm chair, peacefully and quietly, as if he were falling asleep, his spirit passed away. The burial took place on the 26th of November, followed by a very grand funeral service. As he had requested, the inscription on his coffin contained simply his name. The Institute of Civil Engineers erected a stained-glass

7 window in Westminster Abbey as a tribute of respect in his memory. Objectives of the department To impart good technical knowledge to students. Gowri Manoahar, Professor, SVU College of Engineering, Tirupati from to Key Note By Dr. T. Gowri Manoahar: The first national library research seminar, held at Florida State University in 1996, provided the impetus for this consideration of relatively new and uncommon research methods being employed by researchers in the social sciences and in library and information science in particular. This article begins with a review of the various research methods that researchers in library and information science have used. The focus then shifts to an identification of methods appearing in the qualitative research literature. They include phenomenological methods, hermeneutics, ethnomethodology, reflexivity, discourse analysis, and semiotics. Methods more, if not exclusively, quantitative in nature are next examined and include discrete choice analysis, log analysis, protocol analysis, and geographic information systems. (A geographic information system can be viewed as an information service or a management information system, but it is considered here because of its applications as a research method.) Brief consideration is given to possible future methodological trends in social science research. An extensive bibliography is provided

A Guest Lecture on Recent trends in electrical drives conducted by Dr. S.S.Dash, Professor, SRM university on Key Note By Speaker: The Lecture presented the current state and development trends of electrical drives, with particular emphasis on modern control structures and safety systems of various types of electrical machines. Special attention was paid to the needs of industrial drive systems and a possibility of practical implementation of complex control algorithms. Development perspectives of electrical drives are discussed from the perspective of new trends in control, power electronics and electrical machines, with consideration given to systems robust to faults of drive system elements.
