Dasari About the Instructor/Resource person: Mr. Vinod Kumar Dasari, BS (Engg), MEM, MBA, has been the Managing Director of Ashok Leyland Limited since April 1, 2011 and has been its Chief Executive Officer since April 01, Mr. Dasari serves as the Managing Director of Hinduja Automotive Limited. Mr. Dasari served as the Chief Operating Officer of Ashok Leyland Ltd. since April 6, 2005 and served as the Head of its manufacturing, strategic sourcing and corporate quality engineering divisions. Mr. Dasari served as a Joint Managing Director of Cummins India Ltd. He joined Cummins in He commenced his career with the General Electric Company in He served as the President of the Global Railroad business of The Timken

2 Company since 2000 until He joined Timken U.S.A. as Senior Business Analyst of Manufacturing and Strategy. He served as the Managing Director of Timken India Ltd. since 1998 and also served as its Director of Manufacturing and Technology. He has been a Wholetime Director at Ashok Leyland Limited since May 08, He has been a Non Executive Director of Lanka Ashok Leyland PLC since September He served as an Additional Director of GULF Oil Corporation Limited from September 27, 2006 to May 30, He served as a Non Executive Non Independent Director of Timken India Ltd. until April 23, Mr. Dasari holds a BS degree in Engineering from University of Louisville, USA, a Masters Degree in Business Administration from J.L. Kellogg School of Management, USA in 1992 and a Masters Degree in Engineering Management from McCormick School of Engineering, USA. Date: 28 th, December, 10 A.M Scope of event: Mr. Vinod Kumar Dasari spoke briefly about his education and the work experience. He explained about the various hardships he faced as a student and companies he has worked for. He gave abroad overview of how engineering is interconnected socially with science and societal needs, the major problem in the today s world is only catered to the elite rather than the poor and how the trend today should change against that

3 idea. He gave brief idea about project management. He spoke about the three important societal needs that engineers should cater i.e consumer products, commercial products and product for infrastructure. He also explained about the current trends and ideas in the industries. Through the Lecture the students understood the various concepts and current trends in Industrial Automation adopted by various sections within the industry. They use it heavily in most of the fields like Automobile Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Tool Design, etc. Also with the advancement of Rapid Prototyping and 3-d Printing, they are becoming more visible to the outer world as one can see how exactly your product looks like in just a few hours. Planning and designing mechanical objects is the primary focus of mechanical engineers, whether they are producing engine and motor components or complete devices like refrigerators and robots. Design programs like AutoCAD help mechanical engineers do their jobs by helping them create preliminary designs and spot flaws before production, saving time and resources. Mr.S. Prasanna kumar discussed about the importance of designing packages like Autocad, Creo, etc., for a mechanical engineer.

6 What is CATIA? CATIA stands for Computer Aided Three dimensional Interactive Application. The first release of CATIA was back in 1977 by Dassault Systemes, who still maintain and develop the software. CATIA was initially developed for use in designing the Dassault Mirage fighter jet. Over the years, CATIA has developed into much more than a CAD (Computer Aided Design) software package. It is now a software suite which incorporates the following capabilities; CAD, CAM and CAE. CATIA currently stands at version level 6, better known as CATIA V6. The most widely used version of CATIA at present is CATIA V5, with CATIA V4 still being used in some industries, mostly in conjunction with V5. AutoCAD is a line of twodimensional and three-dimensional design software produced by the Autodesk company. It includes a powerful suite of features to improve workflow and create true-to-life maps, diagrams, structures and schematics. CAD software is equal part design and analysis. The design is needed to produce models and prepare component production, and the analysis helps calculate stress levels, the influence of forces and the influences of finite elements in a design. According to a General Electric survey, 60 percent of manufactured parts errors were related to

9 incomplete, ambiguous or impossible drafts -- problems easily corrected with the support of software like AutoCAD. Design Production and Troubleshooting At the earliest stages of a design project, mechanical engineers can use AutoCAD to start sketching ideas and analyzing them to determine the best solution for a given problem. The software makes the process quick and easy; it eliminates the need to draw new blueprints for each version of an idea and simplifies redesigns. The software additionally helps interpret these designs, locating flaws, errors and inconsistencies the mechanical engineer might miss. Alternatively, the mechanical engineer can use AutoCAD to determine the source of a malfunction in an existing product by putting in the specifications and allowing the software to find the problem, allowing the engineer to be more efficient by going straight to the problem and finding a fix. Quality Assurance and Control Thanks to the analysis components of AutoCAD, mechanical engineers can simulate a variety of environments and stresses upon a prototype. This allows them to determine the functionality of a part or machine in extreme environments or under high-stress conditions difficult to test outside simulation. These simulations also provide a demonstration of a prototype's expected performance over time, allowing accurate estimates to be made on a machine's functional life span before requiring maintenance or replacement. AutoCAD allows mechanical engineers to produce useful specifications and give clients exactly what they need in an efficient time frame.

There is no doubt that nowadays knowledge of a foreign language is taking on a greater significance. Knowing German will benefit you in many areas in both your private and your business life.the advantage of learning a foreign language has already been the subject of several research papers. Below you will find the five aspects most often discussed with our course participants.

12 German to improve your career opportunities: German is the mother-tongue in more European countries than English, French, Spanish or Italian. German is the second most important language worldwide for business, tourism and diplomacy. In central and Eastern Europe, German is the most important foreign language. With German as a foreign language, you can improve your career chances. In particular, German is, after English, the most important language for youth qualifications in the fields of biology, chemistry, pharmacy, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, vehicle manufacture, finance, diplomacy, sports, tourism and the whole area of training. Worldwide there are about 130 million people who speak German as their mother tongue and about millions who are learning German. Engineering graduates in certain disciplines are in high demand in Germany, with more vacancies than qualified people to fill them. In the current economic climate, recent graduates of many disciplines have found themselves in a fierce competition for jobs. Yet in several sectors of engineering, graduates in Germany can have their pick of the positions. While the numbers of engineers graduating from German universities has risen to 52,900 in 2009 from just 36,100 in 2002, the country's industry is still short of suitable candidates. "These graduates are not necessarily available to the German labor market,' explains Lars Funk, head of the profession and society division at The Association of German Engineers (VDI), one of the largest technical-scientific associations in Europe. "They might continue studying in a master's study programme, for instance.' Increasing demand: "With the economic recovery, the need for engineers is bound to increase substantially,' continues Funk. Mechanical, vehicle and electrical engineering are

"Despite the economic downturn during the last years, in October 2010, there were 43,500 job vacancies more than there are unemployed engineers who could possibly fill the positions if they all had the required qualifications.' Some firms are filling the gap by recruiting engineers from other EU countries. As a professional identity card for engineers, the engineering card provides for more transparency and comparability within the European labour market. It is an adequate instrument for fostering intra-eu mobility for engineers by facilitating the recognition process for engineers' professional qualifications.'
