11 Two complementary scientific paradigms Totally different from the perspective of cause-and-effect relationships. Two scientific resources for designers 21 Central Principles Prof. Alexander Rinnooy Kan on Complexity Theory Open system Co-evolution Open System Co-evolutie Emergence Fluctuation Self-Ordering does not simply happen! Change is a matter of starting to grow in another direction Butterfly-Effects Scale Free
12 Emergent phenomena in nature the coming into being of new processes, structures and entities (Lichtenstein, 2008) that enable the system to function on a more complex level Under appropriate conditions, natural phenomena emerge the self-ordering way. 23 Innovation, Transformation, Change Emergence Emergence is simply a totally different category, a totally distinct process. Lichtenstein (2014:5) It is a property of all complex adaptive systems, significantly different from transformation. 1. Emergence is CREATION, not simply change; 2. It is triggered by ASPIRATION: an entrepreneurial desire to create new value, to make a new contribution to a community or within a market; 3. That spark generates PROACTIVE CREATIVITY instead of reactive creativity as in crisis-driven change; 4. Research shows that emergent structures EXPAND THE CAPACITY OF THE SYSTEM by an unprecedented amount, vastly increasing the capability of the system to accomplish its work (Prigogine & Stengers, 1984; Swenson, 1988, 1989) 24 12
