In doing so we analyse the commercial potential of implementing this new technology and how to organise a new company to bring the product, process or service into practice. Students will learn to distinguish between an invention, a good idea for a commercial application and an innovation. Furthermore we discuss some essential od technology-based entrepreneurship such as intellectual property rights, technology development and opportunities and growth stage of newly founded firms. Students will learn about the dynamics of early growth of new firms. Many times, entrepreneurs of starting companies are highly dependent on their customers but also on external stakeholders such as venture capitalists, banks, suppliers and partner firms. We will discuss how entrepreneurs operate in these networks, take benefit from these networks and how they make decisions in such networks. In particular, small firms are likely to collaborate with larger incumbent firms which have a very different approach to the management of their business as compared to start-ups. Knowing the difference and how to operate in such instances makes the entrepreneur more resilient and successful. Finally, we will also include the internal development of the firm, the team development during stages of growth. Identifying opportunities for technology-based business; Inventions vs. Innovations; Finding applications for new technologies; Evaluating the options and focusing on unique selling points; Generating technology trees; Maturity analyses of technologies and the market; Appropriability; Innovation models; Inventive problem solving; Intellectual property management; Choosing a business model; From product idea to technostarter. When taking part in this course, students will be able to understand the dynamics of new firm growth. Analyse the complexity of organisations and how it affects the growth of the new firm. The focus will be on understanding technology-based entrepreneurship; the contexts, the forms, and the risks and opportunities associated with technology-based entrepreneurship Based on multi-actor networks you will be able to identify the stakeholders that are relevant for the emergence and growth of new firms and how they influence the direction of the new firm. You will be able to develop and understand decision making process and formulate strategies for new and small firms to cope with the interests and influence of external stakeholders. Furthermore, you will develop skills to analyse entrepreneurial opportunities, to understand customers, to analyse markets, to be able to generate and appropriate the value of new technologies and to choose the right organizational business model. Lectures; in-class exercises; case studies; guest speakers. Literature and Study Materials The course is organized into six sessions. Each session consists of a mixture of lecturing, and discussions of cases, literature and assignments, and presentations. For each session you study the literature and prepare assignments with your group. There will be assignments you have to present and these will be graded. Through class discussion we will further deepen our understanding of the topics and themes of the class. Recommended book, (this may change): Scott A. Shane - Finding Fertile Ground: Identifying Extraordinary Opportunities for New Ventures. Wharton School Publishing, ISBN Journal articles: Will be posted on Blackboard-site. Slides presented in class: Will be posted on Blackboard-site. 4 WM0927TU Intercultural Internship n.v.t Required for Course Contents Study Goals Education Method Assessment Remarks 4 English This 15 ECTS credits internship forms part of the minor International Entrepreneurship & Development. The internship takes place in a developing country preferably in a company, NGO or any other international or intercultural context. The questions to be dealt with can relate to design problems, policy decisions or, in general, Science, Technology and Society issues. The students are required to connect their experiences in their practical assignments to Technology Dynamics approaches, especially in terms of socio-technical systems, technological regimes and/or innovation systems. They should in addition be able to assess the influence of cultural differences on the management of technology and policy issues. There should be a mutual exchange and influence of TPM approaches and the actual problems and tasks, which the internship implies. The internship aims at the integration of knowledge and experience in the personal capacities of the students and the integration of a diversity of theoretical tools in view of practical problems and situations. Such an exchange between theory and practice should both fine-tune conceptual and theoretical approaches and put practical questions in such a perspective. The students are able: 1. to work on sociotechnical problems, 2. to deal with such problems within the framework of a systems approach (technology dynamics) 3. to deal with the impact of cultural diversity on the management of technology effectively and tactically, 4. to reflect on their personal performance in this process. Preferably three months before the internship starts the students start the process of selection and negotiation on the actual content of the internship assignment: which context, which technology, with whom and supervised by whom? This process results in an internship agreement form, which summarizes the assignment. When the course manager has agreed to this assignment, the internship can start. Halfway the internship the students report back on the progress they make addressing all the issues mentioned in that assignment. They receive feedback from the course manager and other supervisors. The final report should reflect the study goals and the different aspects of that assignment. Assessment of internship report in consultation with internship coordinators. The internship usually takes place in the form of a three months stay abroad, as a guest and fulfilling an assignment of a client organization. Internships are available through the minor coordinator and the related internship coordinator, but students can also come up with an internship themselves.
