This ability to create and maintain virtual relationships has enormous potential benefits to both individuals and organisations. But to gain these benefits we need to recognise both the potential and the limitations and adapt our behaviour accordingly. The growth of smart devices and advances in mobile communications allow us as individuals to interact with our virtual networks 24x7. The distinction between our social and business interactions is becoming blurred, and we can no longer rely on physical constraints to establish the boundaries of our behaviour. We also have far less control over how our communications will be interpreted or used, so social comment may become business fact. Complexity, integration, speed and globalisation all mean that excellence in Knowledge Management, including external sources, is going to be more crucial than ever before. For organisations the very same technologies can be used to build and sustain virtual networks across the organisation, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of knowledge. Encouraging the use of virtual networks reduces the need to relocate staff, and it makes it considerably easier for individuals to participate in multiple networks. The challenge for both individuals and organisations is that many of rules that govern behaviour rely on physical restrictions such as access to buildings, documents or equipment. Many of these rules simply can not exist in a virtual environment so we need to establish new rules if we are to gain the benefits and avoid the pitfalls. We now live in a world where global working in teams that are located in multiple locations, in different time zones and have different mother tongues is how we work everyday. How we are doing science in a connected global world has changed. What are the challenges? Does it have an impact on the way we are carrying out R&D? What digital tools can be used to help teams communicate and interact? What behaviours and good practice can help this? How can we help people to adapt to new ways of working without leaping out of the pan of boiling water? Teresa Loughbrough, Digital R&D, Unilever R&D 16:00 16:45 Creating value through web-based collaboration technologies Deploying modern collaboration technologies, whether on the web (Web 2.0) or within large organizations (also known as Enterprise 2.0), is usually presented as a value-creating initiative. Technology providers emphasize the positive aspects of breaking internal silos, fostering a community spirit and creating virtual places for innovative ideas to develop. Although this is by and large true, there are many pitfalls to avoid. When the way people relate to each other changes, the corporate culture changes, and power structures are redefined along new lines.

3 The case of AREVA s Innovation Hub project can help illustrate how a 2.0 collaboration platform can be introduced step-by-step in a large vertical organization so as to harvest the value created by new forms of collaboration while mitigating the potentially destructive effects of having digital traces of transversal communication flying around without control. The Innovation Hub is an initiative of AREVA s corporate R&D team to create a collaborative open innovation platform within the AREVA group. The objective is to allow potential intrapreneurs among AREVA employees to propose breakthrough concepts and to obtain seed funding money and resources to prove the validity of their concept. In essence, the Innovation Hub is a greenhouse allowing out-of-the-box ideas of get a start in the upstream phases of R&D processes. Working together globally can be challenging. Besides expatriateships the company has adopted digital ways of communicating with one another. A few live on-line connections will be shown with the UK and with India: not just sharing video images, but also sharing knowledge systems. The presentation will also give some details about the governance and cultural aspects of working together globally. Companies everywhere are blocking employee access to the social web, fuelled by questionable research, irresponsible pronouncements of self-serving individuals and fear... This happens although numerous organizations, from retailers to banks have seen, experienced and documented the benefits of an open approach to social media access on the work-floor.
