2018 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OVERVIEW The EIRMA Annual Conference (AC) provides an unparalleled opportunity for networking and cross-fertilising ideas and experiences between different industrial sectors, which is what makes EIRMA unique. The world is changing, R&D management needs to change with it. Our Annual Conference 2018 will focus on Evolutions and Disruptions in R&D Management. We will in particular tackle the following topics: News ways of capturing innovation, such as gamification and the challenge method (New R&D strategies); Consequences for talent recruitment and management (human factor); The implications and impact of change for your R&D culture, particularly Digitalisation, Sustainability and Responsible Innovation. The goal of our 2018 Annual Conference is to inspire European R&D leaders to create new ways to work and innovate tomorrow, providing an opportunity to examine cutting edge strategies that have been developed to adapt to, and benefit from, changes in society. Issues addressed What does the evolution of culture in managing R&D mean for your R&D leaders? What leadership approaches can help your teams in disruptive and break through environments? What are the future challenges in running an R&D organisation? How to find, recruit and keep talent able to tackle those challenges? How do we manage the different expectations of entrepreneurial employees and generation Y and Z? What are the new ways to capture innovation and how do they impact R&D management? How to embrace the new ways to unlock the potential of innovation? 2

This is what we invite our members to discuss during this special event. Bring your experience and your questioning to Lyon. Let s exchange between practionners and create the future together! Target Audience EIRMA Representatives, senior industrial leaders in Research & Innovation, people working at senior and middle levels of management, within corporate and business functions that are responsible for R&D and innovation, technology or product development. We also encourage senior delegates to bring high-potential R&D talents and to spread the word among non-member companies that you would consider as potential candidates for EIRMA membership. This would enable them to experience the benefits and networking opportunities that they could gain by joining the Association. Chair Ernst Lutz, EIRMA President, Group Executive Vice President, Business Development, Grundfos Conference Venue Hotel Lyon Métropole 85 Quai Joseph Gillet Lyon 8 Online registration until 21 May 2018 On EIRMA Website: 3

ANNUAL CONFERENCE PROGRAMME Thursday 31 May :30 9:00 Registration & Welcome Coffee (Salons BOURGOGNE-BRETAGNE 1st floor) 9:00-9:15 Conference Opening by EIRMA President A couple of words from the EIRMA President to launch the event and to welcome the participants and speakers. Ernst Lutz, EIRMA President, Group Executive Vice President, Business Development, Grundfos 9: The Future of AI in R&D Industries: From Spotting Trends to Modelling Friends Machine learning and big data analytics has transformed many industries, enabling improvements in processes, customer relations, and profitability. As computation power increases further and data becomes ever-better, we are able to go beyond simple prediction and start to produce models of complex systems. In the future we will start to see social models that predict how individuals interact, enabling us to understand how different personalities may work together more (or less) effectively. We will see models of businesses that predict how suppliers, distributers and customers interact, enabling strategic level decisions to be informed by virtual "what if experiments. One day we will manage our organisations based on more than gut feel and personal experience. We will use data and AI to provide us with optimised processes, organisations and management. AI will not replace us, but it will help us be the best that we can be. This presentation will provide examples of real AI systems that do exactly this. Peter Bentley, Honorary Professor, Department of Computer Science, University College London - Chief Technology Officer, Braintree Ltd, Collaborating Professor, Korean Advanced Institute for Science and Technology 10:15 11:00 Innovating in the digital age widespread gain, concentrated pain In a world where digital technology may at some point enable us to predict everything about anything and communicate with anyone anywhere: how will digital technology change the way we innovate? Arthur D. Little has conducted an extensive study to understand which technologies will have the greatest impact on how innovation gets 5

done, now and in the future. In this presentation we will show the main findings and conclusions of this unique investigation. Winners can anticipate enormous benefits but laggards need get their act together soon. Chandler Hatton, Manager, Arthur D. Little NV 11:00 11:30 Coffee break 11:30 12:15 Siemens Corporate Technology and Innovation in R&D Management Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) has a long successful history as corporate research department at Siemens. Recently Siemens has introduced a new approach Company Core Technologies, which somewhat redefines the role of corporate research and ensures a more strategic and long-term planning of research and predevelopment activities. Also within the last 10 years CT has developed & piloted a variety of successful open/crowd innovation methods and tools and helped to constantly evolve R&D management. Especially crowd based approaches within Siemens have proven a very efficient method within the R&D ecosystem, linking corporate researchers with innovators within the operating divisions. Bernd Korves, Head of visioning and Scouting, Corporate Technology, Siemens AG 12:15 13:00 Fostering Collective intelligence for innovation In a fast changing world facing major evolutions such as the ecological and digital transitions, R&D departments have to adapt in order to identify the key challenges to be tackled and the corresponding innovative technologies designed by innovative ecosystems worldwide. Developing an internal collective intelligence beyond R&D is a way to generate ideas, to share on value-creation and possible business developments in order to define important scientific challenges. The next step is to communicate widely these challenges to ecosystems (academia, start-ups...) for generating concrete solutions which could be developed through common research projects. The Scientific Challenge launched in 2016 by Air Liquide is a concrete example of this new approach for open-innovation leveraging internal and external collective intelligence. Régis Reau, R&D Scientific Director, Air Liquide Group 6

13:00 14:30 Lunch at hotel restaurant 14:30 14:45 EIRMA TaskForce on Responsible Innovation work and progress The TaskForce has been formed to think about emerging issues surrounding innovation, such as how and why we innovate, for whom, and to what end, in the light of increasing concern among the public and policy makers about its impact. It aims to provide practical advice and insights that reflect industry's concerns and can shape policy thinking. The team has developed a special chapter on Responsible Innovation in the Practitioner s Guide to industrial innovation and seeks practical examples of ethical innovation dilemmas from the membership, expressed as very short case studies. Monica Schofield, Director International Cooperation & EU Office, TuTech & Convenor of the EIRMA TaskForce 14:45 15:00 Stimulating breakthrough innovation in sensing and imaging technologies ATTRACT is an open, pan-eu initiative to accelerate the development of high-performance sensing and imaging technologies for market - through a process of co-innovation among European research institutes, small and medium enterprises, companies and universities. ATTRACT will create an ecosystem that EIRMA members can use to help deliver breakthrough innovations. An open call for proposals will be launched this summer, with funded projects receiving lump sum grants of 100,000. This presentation will explain how EIRMA members can use ATTRACT to explore high-risk, high-return opportunities in sensing and imaging technology. 10 11:30 12:15 ERC= Science² Software Defined Infrastructures: from the data center to the edge ERC=Science² is a Europe-wide communications campaign which uses popular scientific themes such as cities of the future and robotics to tell stories about the breakthrough science funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and the potential impact it can have on our lives. David will present one of these projects. A new wave of technological advances is currently under development and promises to be groundbreaking: the future massive introduction of Software Defined Infrastructures (SDI) will provide roots to dramatically increase the efficiency on the management of computing infrastructures. These technologies are affecting all sectors of the industry, from HPC workloads to lightweight network-based computing platforms. In this talk, two different initiatives will be presented, both taking advantage of SDIs: firstly, technology to accelerate and make more efficient genomics workloads; and secondly, technology to make the management and orchestration of Internet of Things more flexible.
