Page 3 of 10 Sewing Use ¼" seam allowances unless otherwise noted. Press after each seam is sewn for accuracy. Pinning is recommended at each intersection. Center Blocks Lay out cut pieces as shown in diagram. Press seams in direction of arrows. Row 1: Sew top row of background squares together. Make sure you have the directional words and musical notes in the right direction. Row 2: Sew the three right and left side squares together as shown. Sew the three right side squares to the right side of the large center rectangle. Then sew the left side squares to the center rectangle on the left side. Row 3: Sew bottom row of background squares together. Make sure you have the directional words and musical notes in the right direction. (Same as for Row 1.) Sew the three rows together. Sew the top row to the top of the middle section, and then sew the bottom row to the bottom of the middle section. Top should measure approximately 32 ½" x 40 ½". Row 1 Row 2 Row 3
Page 4 of 10 Sewing Appliqué Note: The heart, leaves, and clusters of roses are appliquéd using a method called Appliquilt. What this means is you fuse the pieces to the background and then the top is layered with the batting and backing; then, using the free-motion quilting stitch, the appliqués are stitched in place. So you are appliquéing and quilting at the same time. Join templates and trace the heart onto the paper side of lightweight fusible web. Cut out the heart about ½" on the outside of the drawn line. Cut through the drawn line to cut out the majority of the center of the heart. Cut approximately ½" from the drawn line on the inside of the heart. (This will prevent the appliqué from being stiff with fusible. The fusible will only be on the edge of the heart.) Fuse the heart to the wrong side of the red rose fabric (Fabric E). Follow the manufacturer s directions on the fusible web. Cut the heart out on the drawn line and remove the paper backing on the fusible, starting at the cut intersection on the paper. Place heart on the center background and press with the iron to fuse. Trace, then cut out ½" from drawn line Cut away center ½" from drawn line Fuse to wrong side of fabric Press all seams open for this step. Cut 1 ¼" bias strips for the vines. You will need approximately 92" of bias for the vines. To make the bias vine, cut 45-degree sections at 1 ¼" widths. Cut each end to a perfect 45-degree angle using the 45-degree line of a quilters ruler. Sew the bias strips end to end using a ¼" seam allowance. You will need to have a ¼" dog ear on each end to make perfect bias. Press seams open and trim dog ears. ¼"
Page 5 of 10 Sewing Using a ¼" presser foot, fold the bias strip into thirds lengthways with the raw edge facing up. (Make sure the raw edge does not go past the outside edge of the fold). Place under your ¼" presser foot and increase the stitch length to 5 mm (long basting stitch); stitch down the center to hold in place. The stitch may look a little messy, but it will be taken out later. Pin the bias vine onto the quilt top using the quilt image on page 1 for placement. Use a very tiny blind hem stitch or other appliqué stitch (such as the blanket stitch or a tiny zig-zag stitch) on your machine to stitch on the edge of both sides of the vine. It is recommended to use a fine (60 wt.) cotton embroidery thread in a soft lime green color for the appliqué. The finer threads do not show up as much. Do not worry about raw edges at the beginning and ending of the vines. The ends will be covered by the clusters of roses. Trace the leaf shapes (12-13) onto the paper side of the fusible cut-out (as in the steps on page 4). Pin in place along vine to insure correct placement before fusing. Drawn line Leaf Fusible (Cut 12-13) Cut line Fuse to wrong side of fabric (Cut center of fusible away and peel paper off at cut line.) Select several different rose clusters. Working from the wrong side of the rose fabric (Fabric H), cut out a roundish shape of fusible so it completely covers the cluster with a little extra on all sides. You will need about 18 clusters. Cut out each cluster approximately ¼" from the outside of the edges, leaving a little of the tan showing. This will be where you will do the Appliquilt stitching, and it will also help the roses show up on the red fabric a little better. It will also not distract from the printed roses you will be stitching outside the actual printing. Remove the paper backing and place the rose clusters on the quilt top. Reposition any of the leaves, placing some under the clusters if you like. Press all appliqués in place.
Page 6 of 10 Sewing Borders Pin in place and sew the inner border fabric to the right and left sides first. Press. Trim the excess from each end. Pin in place and sew the top and bottom inner borders. Press. Trim any excess from each end. Pin and sew the piano key border to the right and left sides. Press. Trim any excess from each end. Cut the top and bottom border to the correct length. This should be 36 ½". Sew one of the red cornerstones to each end. Press. Sew the top and bottom borders onto the quilt. Top should measure 44 ½" x 52 ½".
Page 7 of 10 Finishing Backing Cut 3 ¼ yards of backing fabric into two equal pieces, approximately 58" x wof. If you have leftover pieces of any of the rose or border fabrics, these can be pieced together for a more interesting back. Piece these into the center or top of the backing fabric where the large pieces come together. Trim off selvages and sew together along 58" edge. Press seam to one side. Quilting and Appliquilting Press backing and top. With backing wrong side up, layer batting and quilt top right side up; baste well. Using free-motion techniques for the quilting, stitch around each of the rose clusters (this is the appliqué and the quilting combined). If you have slight raw edge fuzzies, this is part of the charm of this technique. Stitch each of the leaves and the heart in the same manner. Quilt the rest of the quilt as desired. Using a long quilter s ruler, trim any excess batting and backing before adding binding. Binding Bias binding is recommended for this quilt, so you would have a diagonal stripe if you use the striped fabric as suggested, however it is not required. If you use straight of grain binding, you will have little sections of color on the edges. Using Fabric G, cut 2 ¼" bias strips. Cut the ends at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end, making one long strip. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt using a ¼" seam, keeping raw edges even. Turn folded edge to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place. 2010 Studio e Fabrics
