We have recovered from that and are doing fine. I am having a hard time typing this month as I injured a finger this weekend, another trip to the emergency room Saturday night. Planning for our show is going well thanks to Kathie Dalton. Longtime eagle carver Dale Crawford has had a stroke and is in care. His family donated a good amount of wood to the club for the wood draw. Come to the meeting and get some. We will probably dole it out over several months. Out of time, got to run now. See you at the meeting. Denis Upcoming Meetings February 27, Tuesday, 7:00 PM at the Center 50+. Mike Reifel will be doing a demo on tool use and manipulation; how to make various cuts, safety etc. After Mike s introductory demo, he, Everett Koontz, and Everett Carter will follow up with small group instruction in breakout sessions. Those wishing to participate may bring a knife, gouge and v tool plus a piece of wood to practice on. Treats for February meeting: Jim Harris, Donna Cereghino. Don Fromherz will bring ice cream. 2018 Capitol Woodcarvers Annual Show April 7 & 8, Capitol Woodcarvers Annual Woodcarving Show It s shaping up to be a good show. Kathie Dalton, our Show Chair, has been working hard to ensure this year s show will be a great success. Some of the things she is tackling include: venue, tables, food, demonstrations, awards, participants, vendors, raffle, advertising, auction, lunches, volunteers, and much more. If you would like to help with any of these activities please let Kathie know. Many of you may be thinking that your carvings are not good enough to be displayed. This feeling is understandable but over the years we have found that highlights of the Show always include the displays from new carvers. New carvers bring fresh ideas to our hobby, so if you are a new carver please participate alongside our more experienced carvers. We are looking forward to the demonstrations being planned during the Show. We ll have short forty-five minute demos and talks about woodcarving including: knife sharpening, pattern transfer, working with cottonwood bark, etc. The Dinner Saturday evening, April 7, will be a little different than in previous years. There will be a main dish, salads, rolls, and dessert. The meal is being prepared for us by a caterer. The auction will be conducted during dinner. A $50.00 gift certificate will be drawn and awarded to a dinner/auction attendee. Tables are being scooped up so be sure to submit your reservation to Kathie or to any Board Member as soon as possible. Show flyers and table registration forms are available from Board Members or online at capitolwoodcarvers.org. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Show Club Patches Club Patches Capitol Woodcarvers Club patches are available for $5.00. They look great on hats, jackets, shirts and carving aprons. News From Wednesday s Class News from the Wednesday Woodcarving Class One more layer of learning and fun was added to Jim Harris class on Feb. the 7 th, when Mary Davis taught several students how to paint the hair of the dog on our Coopers. Let me start at the beginning. Long before Christmas, Jim made cutouts of a dove ornament available as a carving project. The very next week, Mary Davis came in with a beautifully carved and painted dove in a stylized Scandinavian motif. After much oohing and aahing, we convinced her to teach us how to replicate her painting. It turns out that not only is Mary an excellent painter but she is also an awesome teacher. It was so much fun that we begged Jim and Mary for an encore. Jim provided cutouts and mentored us in the carving of Cooper the dog in the choice of three postures. By last Wednesday, the carvings were done. Mary then taught us not only about painting hair but also eyes, paws, other embellishments.and you get the picture. We left with our finished projects and a lot more experience in both carving and painting. We all hope we can convince Jim and Mary to collaborate again to share their combined skills for another wonderful learning project. Submitted by Barb Fromherz Carving Events Events April 7 & 8 2018 Salem Wood carving Show Salem, OR Our Featured Carver this year is Bob Curtis. Billie has done a variety of crafts, from knitting and sewing to weaving pine needle baskets. She also enjoys traveling, photography and scrapbooking. Billie has a daughter and two granddaughters. She now lives with her furry boy-kitty named Chester. Submit an Article to the Newsletter Submit an Article to the Newsletter Articles, tips, pictures, event notifications, announcements are always welcome for consideration to be published in the Newsletter. Please submit content to Bob Harris, Don Fromherz, or Bob Curtis. Useful Tips Useful Tips Keep your burning tips at the ready and always within reach. This tip is for our pyrography artists. Sometimes wood burning tips are misplaced or they roll off the table. If you have trouble keeping track of your tips use some removable mounting putty or mounting squares to attach a 2 1/2 to 3 inch glass container lid to the top of your wood burner. The lid makes a great place to keep those burning tips handy. Capitol Woodcarvers Newsletter Page 4

She was the Featured Artist at the 2018, Coastal Carvers, Artistry in Wood show in Lincoln City, Oregon. Fire Painting is a specialized technique utilizing a small torch to create images on paper. The artist paints the surface with milk, which is sometimes tinted with colored ink. A small torch is then used to scorch or burn the surface to create images and shading. Milk has a lower burn temperature than paper so the artist can control the amount of shading desired. View a short video of Cindy on the Club website at: capitolwoodcarvers.org/howto.php#adamsid.
