1 MARCH 2018 THE PIEDMONT WOOD CARVERS CLUB THE PIEDMONT CARVER CARVING THROUGHOUT THE UPSTATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA Monthly Meeting & Carve In Saturday March 17th Join us on Saturday March 17th for our monthly meeting and carve in. Doors open at 8:45 and you may stay as long as you like. Enjoy coffee and donuts or bring a snack to share with the club. Water and soft drinks are also available. There will be a short business session at 11:00. A drawing will be held for door prizes via a raffle. Tickets for the raffle are earned by wearing your name badge, club logo/shirt, having a carving for show and tell, by a donation of a completed Angel of Hope or you may purchase a ticket for $1 each. Raffle items this month: $20 QT gift card, 2 rough outs, PWCC club patch Visitors are always welcome, bring a friend! Club Ed is informal sessions led by PWCC members. March brings Claude Banks, see page 4 for details. If you are interested in leading an informational carving session during a Wednesday Carve-In or during a Saturday Monthly Meeting, please contact Richard Card at richcard@charter.net. 2 Page 2 Spring is finally here! Yippee! The me change means longer days and warmer nights. This gives me that reassurance and joyous feeling that I need to get moving and start something new. Wonderful me for a new carving project! Spring has spring in the club as well. The Educa on department spring into ac on with Tom Gow s lighthouse class. Con nues next month with a class from Orchid Davis on wood burning and pain ng. Club spring cleaning con nues as we spruce up the club room and re-organize our library resources. Thanks to all the members who stepped up to help make our home a be er place. Speaking of home, we d like everyone to snap a photo or two of you carving in your favorite place(s). Share your carving environment with the club and our Facebook visitors. Send you photos to Mike Barton so that he can add them to our Facebook page. This month s mee ng should be a ball of fun as Claude Banks will lead a group carving a turtle in co on wood bark. Claude is always funny and a pleasure to be around. Show work con nues expect news and updates on this shortly. I expect to distribute more Angels of Hope next month, so turn in your Angels. I will miss the mee ng, because I will be a ending Steve Brown s Renegade Round-Up in Tennessee. I ll be carving for a full week with some of the CCA top instructors. 5 Page 5 Club Ed Seminars Pyrography Workshop and Seminar SPACE STILL AVAILABLE Piedmont Wood Carvers Club is pleased to announce a pyrography (wood burning) workshop and seminar led by Orchid Davis. This is an opportunity not to be missed combining wood burning and painting & techniques in one seminar. Title: Pyrography Workshop and Seminar Subject: Two 5 x 7 work pieces, one dedicated to feathery subjects and the other to furry subjects and on the third day painting and techniques Class size: minimum 5, maximum 8 for woodburning, 12 for painting Date/Time: Full seminar April 13, 14, 15, 2018, 9am - 4:30pm each day Painting & techniques only (burning students have priority) April 15, 2018 Location: PWCC club room, Mauldin Cultural Center, 101 E. Butler Rd., Mauldin, SC Seminar Cost: $155.00* (full seminar) payable by your check (no cash) payable to Piedmont Wood Carvers Club, noted as Orchid Davis Seminar *(includes $5 facilities fee) Material Cost: Included with seminar Tools/equipment: Burner and tips, Colwood J tip, You must make arrangements for a burner if you do not have your own. Hosted annually by the Mauldin Garden Club and the City of Mauldin, this Spring festival is your chance to pick up everything you ll need for your garden and home. Families and friends alike can listen to local bluegrass, enjoy a classic car show and grab a bite to eat. PWCC will be selling Hot Dogs and Walking Taco s. Stop by and support the club! How To Fair Saturday, April 14, am 2pm The 4th annual How-To Fair is a day devoted to learning new hobbies and skills at the Main Library. Join community members, local businesses, and non-profits for demonstrations of various hobbies, crafts, and D-I-Y projects. Free and open to all ages; no registration required. 8 Page 8 Member News Welcome back former members David and Reba Turner of Union!!! Request From Dave Sikkelee Dave spent the month of February Carve-Ins teaching a leprechaun to many PWCC members. He would like to see all of those who took the class bring their complete or incomplete leprechaun to the March 17 th General Meeting. Since March 17 th is St. Patrick s day he thought it would be nice to have them all displayed. If anyone has a leprechaun from one of Dave's previous classes that would be added icing on the cake for us new carvers. PWCC Membership Dues Reminder: Deadline for club dues is April 1st. After that, your name will be removed from the club roster. We do not want to lose any members so I urge you to renew before the deadline by sending a check for $25.00 payable to PWCC to: Jim Hayes 23 Worthington Ct. Simpsonville, SC You can also renew at a March Wednesday Carve-in or during the Monthly Meeting on March 17th. Summer Picnic Announcement Mark your calendars and save the date! The PWCC summer picnic will be held on August 25th. The picnic will be held near downtown Greenville in McPherson Park at the Sears Recreation Center. Details coming soon. Club Seminar Announcement Carol Jean Boyd will be conducting a 3 day class on November 13, 14 &15, The class will be for intermediate and advanced carvers and will require hand tools, rotary tool and dust collector.
