Sparkling Hexies Featuring the Effervescence Collection by Kaufman Design and Instruction by equilter and Larene Smith of The Quilted Button Approximate Finished Size: 73 x 88

General Information Skill Level: Intermediate Please read all instructions before beginning. All seams are sewn with a 1/4 seam allowance. Pre-wash and press with spray starch. WOF = Width of Fabric is based on 42. Press all seams open (unless directed otherwise) to decrease bulk. Block A Finished Blocks Block B Block C Fabric Requirements and Cutting Red Circles Fabric A Gold Circles Fabric B Blue/Green Circles Fabric C Pink/Blue Circles Fabric D 3-1/4 Yards Black Fabric E *** Illustration A There will be some waste as this will allow for easier construction of the Blocks and give more stability to the Hexagons when squaring the center of the quilt. The finished size of the quilt is approximate due to the angles of the Blocks. 5-1/2 Yards Block D Backing (If using WIDE Backing you will need ) 81 x 94 *** Batting Includes Binding Illustration B NOTE: Be very careful with the measurements and cut lines. Always measure TWICE before cutting too ensure that the selvage edge that has the DESIGN STRIPES is maintained. Step 1: Cutting the Fabric 1. Fabric A (Red Circles) Cut as follows: a. Fussy cut (1) strip parallel to the selvedge, 1/2 inch further into the fabric from the thickest stripe in the design (See ILLUSTRATION A).

b. Measuring from that first cut, sub-cut a 5 inch strip (See ILLUSTRATION A). The remaining strip, about 108 x 5-1/2 with selvedge still attached will be used for the Outer Border on the quilt. Set the Outer Border strip aside. c. From the 5" strip with the design STRIPES at the top, cut 15 parallelograms (See ILLUSTRATION B). Make the first cut at 60 degrees from the top left to the bottom right. From that edge that you just cut, align your ruler along the cut, and measure 5" parallel to that cut and make the second cut. Continue along the strip to cut the remaining parallelograms. (You can draw these lines onto the fabric if you wish for clear cutting lines.) Label the parallelograms "Block A Center" and set aside. d. From the remaining long piece of fabric which is approximately 108" x 36", cut (3) strips measuring 108" x 4-3/8". Sub-cut these into (24) 12-3/8 x 4-3/8 rectangles. These are for the outer edge of the hexagon and will be trimmed at a later time. Label "Block B Border" and set aside. 2. Fabric B (Gold Circles) Cut exactly the same as done for Fabric A except cut (12) parallelograms for Block B Center and cut (4) strips at 108 x 4-3/8 then sub-cut into (30) 12-3/8 x 4-3/8 rectangles for Block A Border. Label and set aside. 3. Fabric C (Blue/Green Circles) Cut exactly the same as done for Fabric A except cut (12) parallelograms for Block C Center and cut (3) strips at 108 x 4-3/8 then sub-cut into (24) 12-3/8 x 4-3/8 rectangles for Block D Border. Label and set aside. 4. Fabric D (Pink/Blue Circles) Cut exactly the same as done for Fabric A except cut (12) parallelograms for Block D Center and cut (3) strips at 108 x 4-3/8 then sub-cut into (24) 12-3/8 x 4-3/8 rectangle for Block C Border. Label and set aside. 5. Fabric E (Black) Cut as follows: a. Cut (3) strips at 12-7/8 x WOF Sub-cut into (102) 12-7/8 x 7/8 rectangles All Blocks (Outside). b. Cut (3) strips at 7-7/8 x WOF Sub-cut into (84) 7-7/8 x 1-3/8 rectangles All Blocks (Inside). c. Cut (8) strips at 1-1/2 x WOF Join all of the strips at the 1-1/2 edge for the Inner Border. d. Cut (9) strips at 2-1/2 x WOF Join all of the strips at the 21/2 edge for the Binding. Example A 5-1/2 Note: I found it easier to make all full blocks then square off which will cut off some of the full blocks. Step 2 Block A Make (5) 6. Sew (1) Fabric E 7-7/8 x 1-3/8 rectangle centered to the top of (1) 60 Angle Fabric B (Block A Border) 12-3/8 x 4-3/8 rectangle then sew (1) Fabric E 12-7/8 x 7/8 rectangle centered to the bottom as illustrated in Example A then trim the left and right sides at a 60 angle so that the TOP edge of the trapezoid in Example A measures 5-1/2. This assembly is the outer edge of the blocks. Repeat this process until completed a total of (30) units. Make a DOT at all four corners on the WRONG SIDE at ¼ in from outer edge as this will help when sewing the pieces together.

7. Make a DOT at all four corners on the WRONG SIDE at ¼ in from the outer edge of all Fabric A (Block A Center) parallelograms. Sew (1) of Block A Border Example B Outer Edge pieces from Instruction No. 6 to one edge aligning the DOTS. Sew from the outer edge to the DOT (Center). Be sure to backstitch to secure as illustrated in Example B. Sew (1) more Block A Border piece from Instruction No. 6 to the adjacent edge of the parallelogram sewing from the outer edge to the DOT (Center) then finish the Y seam, matching the seams carefully. Sew ONLY from the outer edge DOT to the middle band DOT, Y Seam backstitch to secure. Make (3) exactly the same. 8. Sew (3) of the pieces completed in Instruction No. 7 with Fabric A (Block A Center) in the middle to finish the Hexagon Label Block A. Sew ONLY from the outer edge DOT to center DOT and backstitch to secure. 9. Repeat from Instruction No. 7 four more times to finish a total of (5) of Block A. Label and set aside for Note: Blocks B, C, and D are sewn exactly the same as Block A except for the fabric changes. Repeat Instruction No. 6 through 8 to make the remaining blocks. Always refer to the illustration of each finished block. Step 3 Block B 10. Replace Fabric B (Block A Border) with Fabric A (Block B Border) from Instruction 11. Replace Fabric A (Block A Center) with Fabric B (Block B Center) from Instruction 12. Make (4) of Block B Label and set aside for Step 4 Block C 13. Replace Fabric B (Block A Border) with Fabric D (Block C Border) from Instruction 14. Replace Fabric A (Block A Center) with Fabric C (Block C Center) from Instruction 15. Make (4) of Block C Label and set aside for Step 5 Block D 16. Replace Fabric B (Block A Border) with Fabric C (Block D Border) from Instruction 17. Replace Fabric A (Block A Center) with Fabric D (Block D Center) from Instruction 18. Make (4) of Block D Label and set aside for Note: At each tip of the Hexagon draw a DOT at ¼ in from the outer edge as this will be your guide when sewing them together. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and ending DOTS for added security. Step 6 Sewing the Quilt Center Each ROW contains all the same blocks. The rows are labeled from the UPPER RIGHT to the LOWER LEFT and are sewn together on the diagonal as the rows are connected with a Y seam. NOTE: Refer to the illustration on the cover to ensure proper placement and orientation of the BLOCK CENTERS. 19. Row 1 (Upper Right) Sew (2) of Block B together at one edge.

20. Row 2 Sew (4) of Block C together at one edge then sew to Row 1. See Cover illustration for 21. Row 3 Sew (5) of Block A together at one edge then sew to Row 2. See Cover illustration for 22. Row 4 Sew (4) of Block D together at one edge then sew to Row 3. See Cover illustration for 23. Row 5 Sew (2) of Block B together at one edge then sew to Row 4. Example C See Cover illustration for Mitered Border 24. Square the center by trimming off the excess of the blocks to measure Cut ¼ Past fold approximately 63 x 78-1/2. Step 7 Inner Border 25. Using Fabric E 1-1/2 strip that was joined. Sub-cut into (2) 1-1/2 x 781/2 rectangles (Left and Right Sides) and (2) 65 x 1-1/2 rectangles (Top and Bottom). If you feel more comfortable measure each side (Top, Bottom, Left Side, and Right Side) before sub-cutting the joined 1-1/2 strips to ensure more accuracy based on your finished center. Wrong Side of Step 8 Outer Border Quilt Center 26. Sew (1) Fabric C 5-1/2 x 108 strip (with selvage) to the LEFT SIDE CENTERED as illustrated on the Cover. Pin to secure all the way across Sew to within ¼ from the top and bottom of the center piece corners Do not worry about the excess as this will be dealt with later. Sew the RIGHT SIDE exactly the same using Fabric D 5-1/2 x 108 strip (with selvage). 27. Sew (1) Fabric B 108 x 5-1/2 strip (with selvage) to the TOP exactly as done for the sides. Sew the BOTTOM exactly as done for the top using Fabric A 108 x 5-1/2 strip (with selvage). 28. MITERED CORNERS See the illustration of Example C Fold the TOP and UPPER LEFT outer edges together to see a very large triangle as shown in the illustration of Example C then draw a line 1/4 past the fold (45 degree angle) to create the diagonal. Sew the diagonal edge to the INNER BORDER seam to create the MITERED CORNERS. Do exactly the same process for the remaining THREE corners to finish the quilt top at approximately 73 x 88. 29. Check to ensure that the corners lay flat then trim the excess fabric from the MITERS leaving a ¼ seam allowance. Now trim off the selvage all the way around or you may leave it on until it has been quilted and then trim off at that time. Step 9 Finishing the Quilt Note about Backing: You may use a 3 yards piece of wide backing. Or if using 42 to 44 wide fabric, cut (2) backing pieces at 2-3/4 yards by WOF, and the seam will be vertical. Sew the SELVAGE edges together using a 1 seam then trim the selvage off and press to one side. 30. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top and quilt as desired. 31. Using the Fabric E 2-1/2 strips sew on the binding to finish the quilt.
