Installation Instructions for Icopal Guttering System. Cutting & Handling (1) Where it is necessary to cut or trim the components of the rainwater system tin snips or hacksaws should be used, the use of angle grinders or power saws is strictly prohibited. (2) Care should be taken to de-burr any cuts made in the Icopal guttering system and any filings or swarf should be removed before installation of rainwater system. (3) Care should be taken to avoid any accidental damage to the coating during installation. Any scratches or handling damage should be repaired by cleaning and touching up (touch up paint available from Decra Roof Systems Ltd). (4) Storage of the material outdoors should be avoided. However, if such storage is unavoidable, the material should be satisfactorily covered and should be stored in a manner that will ensure good air circulation in order to avoid the accumulation of moisture. Position the Gutter Correctly Icopal 125mm half round eaves gutters, Install to a recommended rate of fall of 1 in 350 (equivalent to a 28mm drop over a 10m length of gutter). Tips: Guttering should be set at the right height to prevent rainwater overshooting the gutter. Too steep a fall should be avoided, as this will lead to a too bigger gap between the lowest edge of the roof and the top of the gutter. Gutter lengths longer than 10m should slope from the centre to the outlets at either end. Highest point of fall should be at a stop end or the centre point of gutter between two outlets In all cases, roof felting should be extended to drape into the gutter. The roof covering should not extend so far into the gutter as to prevent easy cleaning and maintenance. Gutters should be adequately supported to prevent sagging and ponding. Care should be taken to ensure that there is no sideways tilt of the gutter as this reduces the gutter capacity. Fixing the Gutter to a Fascia Fascia brackets should be fastened with 4no galvanised or bright zinc plated screws of an appropriate size. Fascia brackets should be fitted not more than 1000mm apart or in areas prone to heavy rainfall no more than 800mm apart. Where roof eaves ventilation systems are top mounted on fascia boards an additional Icopal gutter spacer should be installed between the gutter fascia bracket and the fascia board. Icopal gutter spacer 10 & gutter spacer 25 are available to complement 10,000mm 2 ventilation and 25,000mm 2 systems, if you need these spacers you will also need longer fixing screws. Additional Icopal fascia brackets should be fitted to angles and outlets to prevent potential risk of sagging.
Fixing the Gutter to Open Rafter Feet Icopal eaves gutters to be supported by means of Icopal rafter brackets. Rafter brackets should be fastened with 3no galvanised or bright zinc plated screws of minimum size 25 mm long x 6 mm, and fitted not more than 600mm apart. Additional Icopal rafter brackets should be fitted to or near angles and outlets to prevent sagging. Bending Rafter Brackets To establish where to bend the first gutter hook is to be bent you will need to measure the roof gradient. The easiest way to do this is to use a folding rule. Lay the rule B along the roof and allow to fall perpendicularly. (fig. B). Transfer the angle to a sheet of paper and extend the line of the roof (fig. C). Place a gutter hook on the sheet. The back of the gutter hook is to be lain against the vertical line while the point on the gutter hook is to be 30 mm beneath the desired roof line. The intersection point thus obtained on the gutter hook from the extended roof line is now your first bending mark (zero point) (fig. D). Then place the other Rafter Brackets in line after the first gutter hook (fig. D:1). Draw a horizontal line from the first bend mark (zero point) to the last gutter hook (fig. D:2). Mark the bend mark on the last gutter hook the number of mm the gutter is to be angled above the first bend mark (fig, D:3). The line you have drawn will indicate all the bending points on the row of Rafter Brackets. (fig. D:4). Roof lengths in excess of 10 metres require two drainpipes. In which case your gutter will reach its highest point in the centre of the roof line, falling away to the drainpipes. Bending Icopal Rafter Brackets The best way to accurately bend rafter brackets is to use a rafter bracket bending tool available from Decra Roof Systems. Compensating for a roof base which is not horizontal Use a spirit level to find out the gradient in mm/metre of the base of the roof in relation to the horizontal line. Any roof base gradient against the horizontal line is compensated by bending the Rafter Brackets so that the gradient is added to or subtracted from the 3mm/metre the gutter is to be angled against the horizontal line. If the roof base gradient is towards the drainpipe the angle is subtracted from the 3 mm, if the roof base gradient is from the drainpipe the angle is added. The gutter gradient the length of the gutter x (3mm + the roof base gradient against the horizontal line)
Joining Gutters Together Joining Gutters Together Each length of gutter should be joined together using Icopal gutter unions and each joint should be supported with an Icopal fascia or rafter brackets fixed at not more than 150 mm from the union joint. Gutter union should be installed by (1) Hooking the back edge of the gutter union over the top back edge of gutter (see fig.1). (2) Hook the front edge over the front rolled lip of the gutter (see fig.2 & 3). (3) The hinged angle clip of the gutter union is then to be pressed down into its closed position (see fig.4 & 5). (4) Finally lock the hinged angle clip securely into position by folding the locking tab upwards over the hinged angle clip (see fig.6). Additional Icopal fascia or rafter brackets should be fitted to or near angles and outlets to prevent sagging. (fig.3) (fig.4) (fig.5) (fig.6) Form a Running Outlet Running outlets can be placed anywhere along the gutter without the need to create a break in the gutter. (1) Prior to installation the gutter should be measured and marked with the centre line position of where the down pipe is to be fitted. Using a hacksaw cut two angled slots at a 45 o angle 50mm away from the marked centreline position (see fig.1) (cutting tip: start the cut at 90 degrees and the angle the blade to 45 degrees). This forms a 100mm V shaped opening into the sole of the gutter. For your assistance we have included a cutting template on the last page of this installation guide. Crimp cut edge down into outlet by approximately 5mm. Care should be taken to de-burr any cuts made in the Icopal guttering system and any filings or swarf should be wiped clean before installation of rainwater system. (2) Install Icopal Running Outlet, hooking the front edge of the running outlet under the top front rolled edge of gutter and then placing the back edge over the back edge of the gutter (see fig.2). (3) Tabs on back edge of running outlet are then folded over small lip at back of gutter into the gutter (see fig.3). (fig.3)
Fixing Stop Ends At the end of gutter Icopal Universal Stop Ends must be used and each stop end should be supported with a Icopal fascia or rafter brackets fixed not more than 150 mm from the stop end. 1. A bead of silicon sealant should be used at end of gutter to provide a secure watertight joint between the gutter and the stop end unit. All faces to be jointed should be clean and dry (see fig.1). 2. Line up Stop End with gutter and break off rear superfluous rolled lip of the stop end unit along its scribed fracture line (see fig.2). 3. Stop Ends should be installed by inverting stop end unit by 180 o (see fig.3) and slide rolled lip of stop end unit 12mm into the front rolled lip of the gutter. 4. Stop end is then turned through 180 o into a level position and pushed down into sole of gutter (see fig.4). 5. When in this position the internal overlap of the stop end will lock under the small lip at the back edge of the gutter (see fig.5). 6. Push stop end fully into the body of the gutter (see fig.6). 7. Projecting vertical locking tab is then folded over the back edge of the gutter (see fig.7). (fig.3) (fig.5) (fig.4) (fig.6) (fig.7) Fixing External & Internal Angles Angles should be joined to Icopal eaves gutter using Icopal gutter unions and each angle should be supported with two Icopal fascia or rafter brackets fixed to the external or internal angle.
Joining Down Pipes Together Each down pipe is joined together via an internal socket arrangement. Care must be taken during installation to ensure that the internal socket is always at the lower end of the pipe. Socket end always at bottom If down pipes need to be cut to a short length additional Icopal Down Pipe Connectors are available to form a successful watertight joint. Each down pipe connector joint should be supported with Icopal Down Pipe Brackets fixed at not more than 150 mm from the joint. Fixing Down Pipes to Walls Fix down pipe to wall with Icopal Down pipe brackets at top and bottom of pipe. Fasten pipe brackets with 2no galvanised or bright zinc plated screws of an appropriate size into suitable wall plugs (see fig.1). If the down pipe is longer than 2m, use additional down pipe brackets. After installation of down pipe bracket slot snap lock clasp into open front of down pipe bracket and tap into locked position (see fig.2). Which way is the right way up for pipe brackets? Pipe brackets should be fixed with the wider metal band of the bracket to the top and the chamfered edge of the clasp lip to the top. Bottom Ends of Down Pipes Rainwater Shoes are available to divert water away from the building (see fig.1). Overlap the shoe with a down pipe bracket to provide additional security. Icopal Down Pipes can be directly connected to drainage systems (see fig.2) by use of the Icopal Extension Sliding Pipe (see fig.2, A ), Icopal Drain Bowl Strainer (see fig.2, B ), and Icopal Drain Bowl Strainer Sleeve connector (see fig.2, C ). Down Pipe Connector Down Pipe Branches 60 o Icopal Rainwater Branch Pipes are available designed to be flush fitted together to provide an unimpeded drainage flow. Each Icopal Branch Pipe is joined to down pipes via an internal socket arrangement. Each branch pipe joint should be supported with Icopal Down Pipe Brackets fixed at not more than 150 mm from the joint.
Form an Offset Bend Offset bends (swan necks) can be formed using 2no 75 o Offset Bends. Icopal Offset Bends are tapered and are designed to be interference fitted to each other or to outlets and down pipes, care must be taken during installation to ensure that the narrowest end of the offset bend is always at the lower end of the pipe. By combining Icopal Offset Bends with a Icopal Middle Section Pipe (0.5m short length of pipe) a wide variety of angles and soffit overhangs can be formed, see fig. M to right and chart below. The middle piece section can be also be formed from a section of sawn off drainpipe. Relationship Between Icopal Offset Bend 75 o & Icopal Middle Section PROJ (Length of Projection, distance from wall to rear base of outlet) MS Length of Icopal Middle Section Pipe required to bridge gap H Vertical height from base of gutter to bottom end of lower offset bend 200mm Not Required 380mm 300mm 160mm 420mm 400mm 270mm 460mm 500mm 370mm 510mm 600mm 470mm 560mm 700mm 580mm 610mm 800mm 690mm 660mm This table shows the lengths of middle pieces for Icopal Offset Bend 75 o and different roof soffit projections On Completion On completion of installation, all rainwater pipes should be inspected to ensure that no obstructions are present. Rainwater system should be tested to ensure the free flow of rainwater drainage throughout the system. Maintenance In accordance with good practice, gutters, rainwater pipes, outlets and gratings should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned once a year, or more often if the building is in or near an industrial area, or is near trees.
