2 "Beauty is everywhere a welcome guest." ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Ship-in-a-Bottle: Filson Flagship Seattle John Miller, co-owner of Cascade Joinery, describes it as a "ship-in-a-bottle," and indeed this timber frame is. This unique timber framing challenge flipped the script: build a frame inside an already existing building, the Filson's flagship building in Seattle. Tasked with installing a heavy timber trellis designed by Heliotrope Architects for client Dovetail General Contractors, Cascade Joinery got to work in the

3 shop. Dovetail provided 5,000 board feet of reclaimed Douglas fir for the project, and timbers ranged in size from 4 x 5 purlins to 14 x 17 and 12 x 23, with two-thirds of the timbers at the larger end of the range. The team at Cascade Joinery used full-scribe method to cut the joinery. The frame was laid out in the shop, with each piece oriented and fixed in its final position relative to contiguous timbers, at which point the timbers were marked precisely to indicate where to cut away for the joinery. Because the client wanted the original surface left intact, the scribe work had to account for all the irregularities of the original surfaces as the cuts were calculated. Did we mention that this heavy trellis was slated for installation on the second floor of the Filson building? This presented another interesting aspect of this already challenging project. Staging and assembly on the ground lasted the better part of a day, and a crane was then used to unload the timber and put it through the cargo window on the second floor, where the wood was set onto dollies and rolled into the room. However, planning ahead saves time and improves outcomes. The Cascade Joinery team had decided in advance to put together the entire horizontal assembly, given the precise fit of the fully-scribed joinery. Using six of the largest Genie mechanical hoists, each with its own operator, the assembly was lifted into position in less than two hours on the second day. The team spent the remainder of the day setting the purlins, securing the fasteners, and ensuring the joinery fit as scribed. See the results of our labor below!

4 Building a Community's Vision: Kent YMCA This fall, the citizens of Kent will have a new YMCA that promises to be so much more than a gym. Cascade Joinery is honored to be part of a large team bringing a community vision to fruition on the city s East Hill. When completed the center will include a community kitchen, dedicated studio space for classes, outdoor playing courts, and outdoor gathering space. This YMCA is unique in that it is situated between two city parks, expanding outdoor recreation and play opportunities. Cascade Joinery fabricated the glulam timber roof framing for two wings of the building, including the aquatics center. The roof over the pool required three 12-1/4 x 94-1/2" x 94' girders made from Alaska yellow cedar. The remainder of the pool roof glulam beams are Douglas fir, fabricated at Cascade Joinery and treated to preserve them in the extreme conditions of the pool enclosure. The roof of the second wing is comprised of Douglas fir glulam with main beams that are 5-1/8 x 30" x 62'. In total, Cascade Joinery provided about 55,000 board feet of timber, and the three large pool room girders represent nearly half of that total. The total roof area is about 19,500 square feet. We look forward to seeing the finished YMCA as it opens its doors to the Kent community in September.
