1 Course Title: Machine Tool II Course Prefix & No.: PRMA 1402 LEC: 9 LAB: 0 Credit Hours: 9 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students construct basic machine projects using various pieces of shop equipment including milling machines, engine lathes, drill presses and surface grinders. Students focus on safety as well as setup and accuracy of completed projects. COURSE PREREQUISITE (S): PRMA 1401with a grade of C or better must be completed prior to taking this course. RATIONALE: This course is designed to provide students the necessary basic skills for operating surface grinders, milling machines and engine lathes. 2 TITLE: Machine Tool II PREFIX/NO: PRMA 1402 COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Identify most common types of mills. 2. Describe various types of attachments used on a milling machine. 3. Explain various types of cutters and holders commonly used in a milling machine. 4. Determine correct RPM and feed for milling. 5. Demonstrate procedures for indicating a vertical mill. 6. Identify the different types of abrasives used in industrial machining. 7. Recognize the various types of grinding wheels in terms of shape, size, composition and use. 8. Define the various kinds of grinding machines and their operations. 9. Discuss the different features of surface grinding machines and the general procedure for operating under manual feed conditions. 10. Describe the engine lathe and its components. 11. Explain various methods of holding work pieces. 12. Discuss common types of lathe holders and cutting tools for basic machine operation. 13. Identify procedures for grinding the lathe tools. 14. Demonstrate set-up procedures for lathe operation. 15. Describe correct procedures for cutting tapers on a work piece. TOPICAL UNIT OUTLINE/UNIT OBJECTIVES: UNIT 1 Milling Machines A. Explain difference between horizontal and vertical mill and their functions. B. Identify primary parts of a vertical milling machine and functions of each. C. Evaluate difference between conventional milling and climb milling. D. Demonstrate plain milling, side milling, face milling and angular milling. E. Demonstrate major safety precautions. UNIT 2 Milling Attachments A. Identify and describe different types of vises commonly used. B. Discuss main purpose of dividing head. C. Describe rotary table attachment and its use. D. Explain use of boring heads to bore holes of different sizes. UNIT 3 Milling Cutters and Holders A. Describe three basic designs of milling cutters. B. Identify different types of end mill cutters and describe their specific applications.

3 C. Demonstrate difference between T-slot cutter and slitting saw cutter. D. Examine difference between end mill collect attachments and end mill adapter holders. E. Perform removal of end mill from a vertical-milling machine. UNIT 4 Calculate Milling Cutter RPM and Feed Rates A. Explain relationship between cutting speed and machinability. B. Illustrate procedure for indicating mill head. C. Demonstrate ability to indicate work piece using various holding devices. UNIT 5 Abrasives A. Describe the factors that affect the selections of a grinding wheel for specified jobs. UNIT 7 Grinding Machines A. Identify several types of grinding machine operations commonly performed in the machine tool industries. B. Identify and describe various grinding machines and their applications. C. Describe the primary parts of a typical universal grinding machine. D. Recognize possible grinding problems that may occur during grinding operations. UNIT 8 Surface Grinding Machines A. Identify the various surface grinding machine features. B. Describe different techniques for mounting work pieces for grinding operations. C. Demonstrate step by step procedures for operating a surface grinder with a manual feed. D. Define the terms trueing and dressing as related to grinding wheels. E. Illustrate the importance of ring testing a wheel before mounting. F. Explain the general use of a radius angle dresser in shaping a grinding wheel. G. Express the need for shop safety while operating a grinding machine.

UNIT 12 - Lathe cutting tools and holders A. Identify different types of lathe tool bits and describe their uses in various machine operations. B. Explain proper use of straight, right hand and left hand tool holders. C. Describe properties of high-speed steel, cast alloy and cemented carbides. D. Define common types of chip breakers and its functions on a tool bit. UNIT 13 - Grinding and sharpening lathe tools A. Describe grinding procedure and required angles. B. Define difference between high-speed and cement carbide lathe bit. UNIT 14 - Cutting speed and feeds A. Define correct RPM and cutting speeds for machining purposes. B. Identify different factors affecting cutting speeds.

5 COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EVALUATION: Upon completion of the objectives for this course, the student will have demonstrate the ability to operate a vertical milling machine and use the various types of cutters needed for different metal removal procedures.
