1 HANDWHEEL ASSEMBLY UPGRADE PURPOSE The purpose of the notice is to document the procedures involved in removing old handwheel assembly parts and replacing them with new parts. The new parts allow the handwheel lock and trip shaft to be pinned together. In addition, the 2-piece handwheel shaft is replaced with one single shaft. The new parts are listed below: (1) Hand Wheel Trip (1) Hand Wheel (1) Hand Wheel Lock (1) Dowel Pin M6 X 12H PROCEDURES Lock and Dowel Pin Trip Figure 1: New Assembly Parts Note: Depending upon your physical dexterity, you may be able to perform these procedures by only removing the drive base cover instead of also removing the base plate. This could be a time saver. Access Old Parts 1. Remove the oil from the base. This could be up to 12 gallons. 2. Remove the piping connecting to the drive case cover and also remove the heater and sensor cables. 3. Support the drive base cover with a transmission jack, remove the (10) M10X 65 hex head screws and pry the drive base cover from the oil pan bottom. 1 of 7

2 Figure 2: Drive Base Cover 4. Lower the cover and pull it away from the machine. 5. After removing the drive base cover, see if you can access the coupling that joins the two old handwheel shafts together. If you think you can separate the shafts by removing the coupling, you will not have perform steps 6 through 9. Coupling Worm Gear Figure 3: Coupling and Worm Gear 6. Remove the oil gauge and piping from the bottom of the oil pan. 7. Situate the transmission jack under the base and secure it to the base plate with an M12X25 screw. 8. Remove the (22) M12 X 35 hex head screws that secure the oil pan to the base. Slowly lower the oil pan. You may have to pry it away from the base. 9. Roll the oil pan away from the machine. 2 of 7

3 Separate and Remove the s Service Notice 1. Manipulate the handwheel so that the shaft protrudes out of the seamer, farthest, on the discharge side. This disengages the handwheel from the turret and positions the shaft coupling and the worm gear in a favorable position for removal. 2. Loosen the shaft coupling and remove, if possible. 4. On the operator-side of the seamer, remove the locking handle. 5. From the operator-side of the seamer, pull the handwheel out of the machine. The worm gear, the woodruff key and sensing collar will fall off the shaft as it is pulled from the machine. These items will be reused when the new parts are installed. 6. Remove the handwheel from the shaft by removing the snap rings. Make sure to catch the woodruff key that locks the shaft to the handwheel. Retain all of the parts. They will be used when the handwheel is installed on the new shaft. 4 7. Move to the discharge-side of the machine and loosen the (2) M6 screws that secure the handwheel lock to the handwheel trip shaft. 8. Make sure the snap rings are removed and pull the locking handle from the machine to remove the trip shaft. 9. Pull the hand wheel and shaft from the discharge-side of the seamer. If not already removed, the coupling will fall from the shaft. This item can be discarded. 10. The locking mechanism assemblywill also drop as the shaft is pulled from the machine. Save these parts. Remove the handwheel from the old shaft by removing the retaining rings and woodruff key that secure it to the shaft. These parts will be used in the next step. 2. Install the handwheel on the new hand wheel shaft. 3. Remove the locking handle from the old handwheel trip shaft and install it on the new hand wheel shaft. 4. Inspect the shafts to ensure there are no burrs. Burrs on a shaft will damage o-rings on the inner bushings installed in the base walls. 5. From the operator-side of the seamer, slide the new handwheel trip shaft and the new handwheel shaft into the outer bearing holder on the machine as shown in Figure 7. 4 of 7

5 6. As the shafts are slide into the machine, the part of the handwheel locking mechanism, worm gear with woodruff key and sensing collar must be added to the handwheel shaft. Outer Bearing Holder Trip Trip Figure 7: Installing New s 7. Slide the handwheel shaft into the handwheel spool. Remember to include the thrust bearing and flange bearing on each side of the spool. These items are part of the locking mechanism assembly. The remaining parts the assembly, including the handwheel lock and dowel pin will be installed later. Thrust and Flange Bearings Inner Bushing Spool Figure 8: Locking Mechanism Parts 8. Carefully slide the handwheel shaft and the trip shaft through the inner bushing in the base. There are o-rings in the bushing that can be damaged if you re not careful. 9. Install the worm gear on the handwheel shaft. Continue sliding the shafts into the machine and through the second inner bushing until the worm gear key slot and snap ring grooves become visible. 5 of 7

6 10. Insert the woodruff key into the slot and slide the worm gear over the key. Lock the worm gear in place with two snap rings. With the sensor collar installed on the handwheel shaft, continue sliding the shafts through the second outer bearing holder. 13. Install the handwheel on the new handwheel shaft using the two snap rings and the woodruff key. 14. Install the locking handle on the new trip shaft using the M6X25 screw and washer along with the woodruff key. 15. Install the snap rings on the two ends of the new trip shaft. 16. Install the snap rings on each side of the locking mechanism. 6 of 7

7 17. Install the remaining parts of the locking mechanism on the handwheel shaft and the trip shaft. This includes the handwheel lock and H dowel pin. Ensure the spring and dowel pin are inserted into the hole on the side wall of the base. 7 of 7
