1 These two activities complement classroom work on the topic of Viking shipbuilding: Travel to the longboats; and Create a longboat. Skills and Capabilities These activities offer opportunities for pupils to develop the following Cross-Curricular Skills, Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities: Being Creative Working with others Using ICT By working together to research, design and create long boats children should have the opportunity to: make ideas real by experimenting with different designs, actions, and outcomes. By working as a class and in small groups to design and create a docking area children should have the opportunity to: listen actively and share opinions; suggest ways of improving their approach to working collaboratively; and take personal responsibility for work with others and evaluate their own contribution to the group. By taking a snap shot of their work at the end of each activity and discussing it, children should have the opportunity to: manage and present their stored work and showcase their learning across the curriculum, using ICT safely and responsibly. 2 New words and phrases Teleport Longboat Bow and stern Hull You may find it useful to introduce pupils to new words and phrases. The amount of detail you use when explaining these terms will depend on the age and prior knowledge of the children. This document references this other CCEA Minecraft STEM resources: Minecraft Recipes resource document and videos. Teacher tool description Approximate times are given for each step throughout the resource. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. 3 Teacher tasks Set gamemode to creative The steps in this resource area designed for creative multiplayer gamemode. In game open the Teacher menu by pressing m. In the World Settings tab choose Gamemode: Creative. Also lock the time of day by toggling the padlock icon. Pupils now have a full inventory for building. In creative mode they won t need to craft or scavenge for food or craft tools. The steps in this resource area designed for creative multiplayer gamemode. However a similar approach could be used in creative singleplayer gamemode. However, pupils would not have the opportunity to work together in small teams. Singleplayer gamemode is played locally on one machine, pupils do not connect to a server. See our Getting Started resources for more information. 2
4 Teacher tasks Navigating the map Spawn area When pupils enter the map they will initially appear at the spawn area. Spawning happens when players log in and appear in the Minecraft world. The large beam of light shows the spawn area. Go through the X arch way to go to the small Viking Village. 3
5 Teacher tasks Using the hotbar The nine squares are called the hotbar. This is where you store and select commonly-used items from your inventory. Take a moment to point out the hotbar to pupils. Save the multiplayer world Remember to save the multiplayer world from the server tool every 30 minutes. See page 5 of the Teacher tools resource. 4
6 Travel to the long boats activity In this step pupils are teleported to the long boats. Step 1: Teleport to the longboats Ask the pupils to log into the multiplayer world. Teacher task Teleport the pupils to the longboats In MinecraftEdu teachers should teleport to the long boats location: /tp See the Teacher tool document for more information about teleporting. Next, open the Teacher menu by pressing m. In the Player Management tab choose Teleports all students to your location. The pupils will teleport to your location, at the longboats. 5
7 Create a long boat activity In these steps pupils work collaboratively to create a dock and long boat. Step 1: Design a longboat In MinecraftEdu, ask pupils to look at the ready-made longboats. Pupils should note the following features: bow and stern hull decoration piece and sails Ask the pupils to get into small groups to discuss how to build a boat in MinecraftEdu. 6
8 Design Ask pupils to draw Viking boat designs on paper. Ask pupils to annotate their drawings to show each part of a longboat and its purpose. Depending on their level, they could even produce a section drawing of the boat, describing the inside. In small groups, ask pupils to consider how they will create their Viking boats in MinecraftEdu. You may find these resources useful: Build a long boat video Long boat blue print guide 7
9 Step 2: Design a dock or pier To build the long boats in the Viking Minecraft world they will need to be attached to a dock or a pier. It s not possible to build them in mid-air without an initial connection to the island. If you are working with a large group a dock consider building a dock. Here is a suggested example dock: Long boats are docked at each of these points As a class decide on how many long boats are to be built and the dimensions of the long boats. For example 27 blocks x 13 blocks. Working in small groups ask pupils to design a shape and location for a dock in the multiplayer game. The dock must accommodate the dimensions and number of long boats. Ask each group to draw their suggested docks on paper. Ask the class to vote on the preferred dock design. The most favoured dock should be designed by a small team in the multiplayer gamemode. 8
10 If you are working with a smaller group you may wish pupils to build simpler piers located around the edges of the island, for example: 9
11 Step 3: Build! Once they are finished working on paper, ask pupils to return to MinecraftEdu. Let the pupils know they are in creative mode they can fly and will have a full inventory. This frees pupils up from searching for supplies to build, so that they can give full focus to the building task. In small groups, pupils should now build their dock or pier and long boat. At the bottom of the larger Viking long boat village, there is an unfinished ship. Pupils may wish to complete this longboat if time is limited. Ask pupils to name their long boat. 10
12 Take a snap shot Ask pupils to take a series of photos (snapshots) from their Viking long boat and talk about their designs. See Quest 1 and 2 for details of how to take a snap-shot in Minecraft. Ask pupils to discuss their designs, for example: The prow dragon head design. Why do you think the Vikings carved dragon like figures onto their ships? What would Vikings have stocked their longboats with for trade and war? How might they create those items in MinecraftEdu? If you have time, ask pupils to complete the task by stocking their MinecraftEdu longboats for trade or war.
