2 Getting Started In order to run your own camp using Minecraft you will need someone on your team with a basic to moderate understanding of computers and networks. You will be running your own Minecraft server on a local network with Internet connectivity. This can be accomplished in a myriad of ways and we won t cover all of them here but this should get you started. System Requirements Computers We recommend running the server on a dedicated computer if you can. Use a computer that was new in 2013 or later with an Intel i5 or i7 generation CPU, or equivalent. Note: It is possible to run both the Minecraft game and the Minecraft server on one system, we have seen this done, but if you experience slowness then you ll want to find a second computer to run the server components. You will need at least one computer to run Minecraft and perform world administration tasks. Network Requirements We recommend running on a wired Gigabit Ethernet network, though it is possible to use a Wireless or Wi-Fi network with a small number of Minecraft gamers. With enough gamers it is possible to overwhelm a wireless network, at which point using a wired network becomes a necessity. Minecraft Requirements At the present time the camp world as we have designed it requires the use of Minecraft version 1.8. Although 1.0 is available as of this writing, some necessary components are not yet compatible. See the section of this documented Running an Older Version of Minecraft for assistance. In order to use the story sheets you will need to be able to access the Internet. Make sure that your gamers can access the Internet in a safe manner. Safe Gaming and Safe Modding It is wise to note here that you should be wary of the public servers, and downloaded files for Minecraft. Not all public Minecraft servers are made equal, and many websites may have ads or banners around their download links that are inappropriate or deliberately misleading. Because of this surrounding culture, employ a high degree of caution when downloading new files or playing on new servers. Installing Minecraft Forge and ForgeEssentials Minecraft Forge Simple Machines, and ForgeEssentials are Minecraft mods that are used to protect section of the Minecraft world from manipulation and destruction. These are already installed and operating on the server components, but it is helpful for the camp administrator to install these on his own Minecraft game to help administrate the camp. Install MinecraftForge 1. If you are running Minecraft, close it completely. pg. 2 4/20/2016

3 2. Download and install MinecraftForge from Click the appropriate icon from the Download Recommended section. I.e. If you are running Minecraft on Windows, click Installer-win: 3. Run and complete the installer. 4. To test if it was successfully installed, open Minecraft. When the Minecraft Launcher is open, look in the lower left of the screen for a Profile: selector. You should find a new option named forge. Select this, then press Play to start Minecraft. pg. 3 4/20/2016

4 5. You should see a new splash screen as Minecraft starts up indicating that Forge is loading. Installing ForgeEssentials 1. If Minecraft is running close it completely. 2. Open your browser to 3. Scroll down to the About Forge Essentials Client section of the page and find a download that is compatible with Game Version 1.8. See image below. pg. 4 4/20/2016

5 Click the name of the file and the download should start shortly. If you receive a warning that this file can harm your computer, click the button to indicate you wish to keep or continue downloading the file. (The warning is a general disclaimer about.jar files as they contain executable software). 4. After the download is finished, move the file into the.minecraft/mods/ folder. This is located in different places depending on your OS. Running an Older Version of Minecraft When you start up the Minecraft game the first screen that appears is the Minecraft Launcher. The launcher allows you to change some game settings. As of this writing Minecraft Camp supports the game version 1.8. You will need to run Minecraft in 1.8 or earlier to connect to the server. Use the steps and screenshots below to accomplish this. 1. At the Minecraft Launcher screen you will see what version of Minecraft is ready to be launched. 2. In the lower right of the screen, click the button New Profile. 3. A new screen opens named Profile Editor. Under Profile Info group, change the Profile Name: setting to Minecraft Camp pg. 5 4/20/2016

6 4. Under the Version Selection group, you should see that the setting Use Version: is set to Use Latest Version. Using that pick list, change this to: release Click the Save Profile button to save this as a new profile named Minecraft Camp. 6. Returning to the Minecraft Launcher screen, you should see you are ready to play Minecraft 1.8, and the selected Profile should be Minecraft Camp. Finally press the Play button to launch Minecraft. pg. 6 4/20/2016

8 Maintaining the World Moving Around the World Quickly Warping One of the tools installed on the server provides the /warp command. While in the Minecraft world if you hit the T button to talk or the / button to begin a command, a command prompt will appear. Type /warp and hit the tab key, and you will be provided a list of warp locations associated with each structure within the world. I.e. /warp calf will immediately move you to the golden calf structure. Fixing Repeater Clocks Throughout the camp world there are a few redstone circuits called clocks that run constantly and keep some aspects of the world operating. See the section List of Critical Redstone Circuits in this document. Sometimes when stopping and starting the server these clocks will stop running you and need to start them up again. There are lots of videos and documents you can find online to help manage these but we are providing a link to one below. pg. 8 4/20/2016

9 List of Critical Redstone Circuits Below is a quick list of redstone clock circuits that are used throughout the world. The /warp command is used to quickly travel to that location, which is often hidden from plain view. Below are descriptions of each circuit /warp circuit_staff1 /warp circuit_staff2 /warp circuit_lions /warp circuit_archery /warp circuit_ark Moses Staff Circuit #1 /warp circuit_staff1 This clock circuit applies blindness to the player when they move close to this area. Blindness causes everything further than a few blocks away to be blacked out. Moving away from the area cures blindness within 15 seconds. This is in reference to the ninth plague of darkness. Moses Staff Circuit #2 /warp circuit_staff2 This clock circuit is constantly spawning and removing bats. Although bats are not directly one of the plagues of Egypt, the kid s creativity spawned this in place of locusts! Daniel s Lion Den /warp circuit_lions pg. 9 4/20/2016

10 This clock circuit is maintaining a small group of Minecraft Ocelots (lions) in the den. Without this circuit the Minecraft world can de-spawn, or remove, the Ocelots after some time. Jonathan s Archery Field /warp circuit_archery pg. 10 4/20/2016

11 The clock circuits of this labyrinth below the archery field run the mechanics of the archery field itself. There are two clock circuits here that need to stay running. When using the archery field if the shooter stands in the designated area and hits the bull s eye they receive a message they ve hit it! Note: Only one shooter at a time per target to receive the messages. The Ark /warp circuit_ark This clock circuit maintains a minimum animal count within the ark area so that players can complete the assigned task of helping move animals onto the ark. Adding or Removing Monsters from Minecraft In World #4 of Minecraft Camp, players are searching for objects within the world. In order to provide a more challenging experience we recommend running World #4 on a separate computer so you can turn monsters on, forcing players to team up to explore the world in order to survive. You can do this on the server by editing the server.properties file, located in the root folder of the world. pg. 11 4/20/2016

12 Open this file in Notepad or any text editor. Look for the line spawn-montsters and change the value after the = sign. The value true will spawn monsters in the world, the value false will remove them entirely. Also look for the line difficulty and change this to a value between 0 and 4. Troubleshooting Failed to connect to the Server, Outdated Server! I m still on 1.8 If you receive this error upon connecting to the Minecraft Camp server then you are most likely running Minecraft version 1.9 or later. See the section in this document named Running an Older Version of Minecraft Failed to connect to the Server, java.connectexception: Connection timed out: no further information This is a general error that you could encounter when you are unable to connect to the server. It means the Minecraft game is not able to connect to the server. There are a lot of reasons this could happen but try the following: Confirm both the server and the computer running Minecraft are: o physically connected to the same network by wire or by wireless o being assigned an IPv4 address (usually in the form of x) Confirm the server firewall is allowing connections on TCP port To determine whether the firewall is an issue, you can temporarily turn off the servers firewall and try to connect. If you successfully connect with the firewall disabled, you should turn the firewall back on and allow incoming connection on TCP port if you can. pg. 12 4/20/2016
