Skill Set 1: Driver/Operator Competitive VEX Robot Designer Terminal Objective 1.4: program and operate the Tumbler Performance Objective: Program and operate the Tumbler in Tank (stick), Arcade, and Tank (button) modes, navigate the obstacle course in each mode in less than 80 seconds. Enabling Objectives: 1. describe the following items: Tank (stick) mode, Tank (button) mode, Arcade mode, function block tree, main code window, while loop 2. describe the purpose of a while loop 3. explain the method for setting the configuration of the motor ports 4. explain the steps to program the Tumbler in Tank (stick) mode 5. explain the steps to program the Tumbler in Arcade mode 6. explain the steps to program the Tumbler in Tank (button) mode Laboratory Hardware: The following materials and hardware are required and unique to this lesson: Driver/operator obstacle course Learning Activities: 1. View PowerPoint presentation and complete Activity Sheet 1.4, Program and Operate the Tumbler. 2. Program Tumbler to operate in Tank (stick) mode, complete obstacle course. 3. Program Tumbler to operate in Arcade mode, complete obstacle course. 4. Program Tumbler to operate in Tank (button) mode, complete obstacle course. Formative Evaluation: Activity Sheet 1.4, Program and operate the Tumbler, will be used to assess student progress. The answers to Activity Sheet 1.4 are as follows: Matching 1. E 2. C 3. H 4. B 5. G 6. A Developed by Trevor Robinson Lesson 1.4 page 1
Short Answer 7. Click on the configuration icon in the main code window. In the window that opens, you can define motor ports. 8. A while loop is a function that performs a task while something else is true or false, or a condition is met. In this case, the while loop allows the joystick to control the movements of the Tumbler. 9. Begin the program with a while loop where 1==1. Add the function Tank 4- motor to the while loop. In the popup window, set the channels and the motor ports. Download the program to the microcontroller. 10. Begin the program with a while loop where 1==1. Add the function Arcade 4- motor to the while loop. In the popup window, set the channels and the motor ports. Download the program to the microcontroller. 11. Begin the program with a while loop where 1==1. Add the function Joystick Digital to motor. In the popup window, define the necessary information: Joystick #, Channel #, Forward Direction Button # and Motor Value, Reverse Direction Button # and Motor Value, and Motor #. Repeat this step for all for motors. Download the program to the microcontroller. Summative Evaluation: Performance Assessment 1.4, Program and Operate the Tumbler, will be used to assess student progress. In addition, the following test items could be used to measure the enabling and terminal objectives on a unit or end-oflevel test: 1. This mode allows the operator to control the robot using only one joystick. A. Arcade mode B. Dual operator mode C. Tank (stick) mode D. Tank (button) mode 2. This mode allows the operator to control the robot using both joysticks. A. Arcade mode B. Dual operator mode C. Tank (stick) mode D. Tank (button) mode 3. Where is a program edited in EasyC? A. Function tree window B. Main code window C. Configuration window D. Start page Developed by Trevor Robinson Lesson 1.4 page 2
4. After starting EasyC, what is the first step taken to begin programming a robot. A. Define variables B. Start a new project C. Insert a while loop D. Download Default code Developed by Trevor Robinson Lesson 1.4 page 3
Performance Assessment 1.4 Program and Operate the Tumbler Name: Start Date: Skill Set: Driver/Operator Terminal Objective 1.4: program and operate the Tumbler Performance Objective: Operating the Tumbler in Tank (stick), Arcade, and Tank (button) modes, navigate the obstacle course in less than 80 seconds. Performance Assessment Elements Acceptable Unacceptable 1. Operate Tumbler through obstacle course using tank (stick) mode in less than 80 seconds Time 2. Operate Tumbler through obstacle course using Arcade mode in less than 80 seconds Time 3. Operate Tumbler through obstacle course using tank (button) mode in less than 80 seconds Time Evaluator: Date: Developed by Trevor Robinson Lesson 1.4 page 4
Performance Assessment 1.4 Program and Operate the Tumbler Course Layout Directions: Stand behind the start/finish line. Drive the robot forward through the course, navigating around the cones. Drive inside the box. Exit the box and return to the start/finish line by driving the robot through the course in reverse. Developed by Trevor Robinson Lesson 1.4 page 5
Activity Sheet 1.4 Program and Operate the Tumbler Name: Date: Directions: Match the description of the item in the left column with the best selection from the list of items in the right column by writing the corresponding letter in the space provided. 1. A function that performs a task while something else is true or false 2. Mode that uses one joystick to control the movement of the robot 3. This contains a list of functions available for use 4. Mode that uses buttons to control the movement of the robot 5. This shows what will be downloaded to the microcontroller 6. Mode that uses two joysticks to control movements of the robot A. Tank (stick) mode B. Tank (button) mode C. Arcade mode D. Dual operator mode E. While loop F. For loop G. Main code window H. Function tree I.
