6 Friday Stories behind the prints Carina Seth Andersson designed three fresh prints for Marimekko s new home collection: Hortensie, Spaljé and Basket. All the kitchen textiles, cushion covers and other fabric items in the collection are printed in Marimekko s own printing mill in Helsinki, Finland. HORTENSIE & SPALJÉ BASKET The Spaljé and Hortensie prints combine a graphical structure and unexpected organic forms. In these prints a beautiful and untrammeled hydrangea climbs up an architectural trellis. The idea for the prints was born at Carina Seth Andersson s summer house. Carina Seth Andersson designed the Basket print to imitate the rhythm of a twine basket by cutting out different shapes of paper with scissors. The blackand-white pattern complements the airier Hortensie and Spaljé prints both as textiles and as tableware. 10 Designed together The idea for the new Oiva tableware patterns came up at a meeting of Marimekko s design team, when Carina Seth Andersson presented her first sketches for the Hortensie print. The new collection was built on the creative collaboration between Carina and Sami Ruotsalainen, the designer of the tableware. The cutout, which represented a flowering hydrangea stem, was arranged on top of an Oiva plate. Carina then folded the stem over the edge of the plate. Sami loved the idea that the pattern could be extended both inside and beneath the tableware. For him, it is important that tableware items look beautifully finished from every angle. Carina was inspired by the climbing hydrangea that grows on the side of her summerhouse. The Hortensie pattern was inspired by the climbing hydrangea that grows on the wall of Carina s summerhouse. She came to the first design team meeting with a paper cutout of her new design.
11 All the textiles in the collection are printed in Helsinki. Once everyone had agreed that a new home collection was a great idea, Sami started working on a final design proposal for the collection. He wanted to create a table- setting theme that could be combined with his other Oiva table ware designs. Sami also felt that the new collection had to match the many beloved things people have in their homes. Playing with different pattern sketches, the design team came up with the idea of creating an entire collection of tablesetting items. The floral Hortensie design was complemented by the more graphic Basket and Spaljé patterns, both of which were created by the same paper cutting technique. Sami also had had prototypes of colour-dipped Oiva tableware in his studio for some years, waiting for the right moment. They fit perfectly in the table setting. Carina gave Sami free creative reign. He made paper cutouts of her designs and arranged them on the tableware. When Carina saw the final proposal, she said that it was perfect. Everything was like it should be. The collection also includes kitchen textiles, table linen and fabrics that are printed in Marimekko s in-house printing factory in Helsinki.
12 In conversation with Carina and Sami HOW DID THE DESIGN PROCESS BEHIND THE NEW COLLECTION GET STARTED? Carina: I think it started when I presented some sketches for my new Hortensie design. I especially liked how the flowerheads and stems could be bundled into a loose, expressive pattern. Sami and I started to play around with this idea on Oiva tableware and we soon came up with something that felt exciting. I then let Sami decide how to arrange the new pattern on his original tableware design. Sami: When Carina showed us some of her new print designs, she had these paper cutouts with her. She folded one of the cutouts over the edge of a plate. It was the stem of a hydrangea flower, and we thought the idea was brilliant. Our design team and I then got to work. When Carina saw our proposal, she said: I don t want to change anything. WHAT DROVE YOU CREATIVELY WHEN YOU WORKED ON THE COLLECTION? C: When Marimekko asked me to design an organic pattern for the new collection, I knew it would be a challenge. But this time around an organic design made sense. It was a good way to follow up my previous collection for Marimekko. The inspiration behind the Hortensie and Spaljé patterns was the climbing hydrangea at my summerhouse. S: Carina s designs inspired me from the start. Her new print combine multilayered minimalism with an organic mood. The designs are modern and present an interesting contrast to our other tableware patterns. I also like the way pattern and form complement each other. Each print tells a story and it s important to match that story with the right form. For me, Hortensie is about creating space and air, while Basket suggests the rhythmic interplay of dark surfaces. Spaljé is the perfect bridge between the two patterns. EVERY DAY IS WORTHY OF GOOD DESIGN. HOW DO YOU THINK THE NEW COLLECTION HONOURS THIS THOUGHT? C: I think everyday objects should always communicate a sense of character. Sometimes the effect can be subtle and discreet other times more conspicuous and direct. These objects should also be durable and long-lasting. What I find exciting is how the new collection can be combined with other objects in so many positive ways. S: When I m designing objects for everyday use, I keep in mind the home environment. It can be a space filled with beloved objects or a home that s being decorated for the first time. In that sense, everyday objects always have an essential role in any home. We enjoy using them. We take care of them. Sometimes we even give them a place of honour in our homes. My work is also about solving everyday problems and designing objects that are in harmony with their surroundings. I want my creations to be purposeful and beautiful at the same time.
