1 Tips on Craft Construction Craft Projects from the 2012 Collaborative Summer Library Program Manual By Margaret Noon Iowa Library Services/State Library Des Moines, Iowa 1. Starry Night (p. 85) i. Black construction paper, one piece per child ii. Star shaped stickers plain or glittered (available at Wal Mart) iii. White crayons or chalk i. Give the children a piece of black construction paper ii. Let them create a starry night with supplies listed above. 2. Sparkling Stars (p. 86) i. Pre cut star pattern ii. Glitter crayons or glue iii. Craft sticks iv. Tape v. Ribbon, yarn or string i. I made the stars out of white cardstock. ii. I outlined in heavy black marker, then ran through the copier to make enough copies. iii. I used glitter glue because that is what I had; drying time will have to be taken into consideration. iv. I paper punched a hole in one point, then used string, yarn or ribbon to make a hanging star. v. Crayons would be easier to use and don t involve drying time, plus children can color on the stars more. 3. Wishing Boats (p. 89) i. Wishing Boat pattern in manual photocopy many of these. ii. 2 i. Give each child a boat; let them cut it out, as the shape is very simple ii. Have children write a wish on the inside of the boat. iii. Fold and glue the boat together. iv. Color or marker the outside of the boat. v. Option: Put up blue bulletin board paper and have the children hang their finished boats. 4. Wishing Well (p. 90) i. Copies of the pattern (in the manual) ii. Scissors iii. Glue or tape iv. Crayons or colored pencils i. Make copies from white card stock of the wishing well pattern for the children. ii. Cut out the pattern of the wishing well in advance, or have the children do it. iii. Have children color their wishing wells with crayons or colored pencils. iv. Glue together pieces where shown. This can be messy use a glue stick and hold. v. Optional: Glue a penny to the inside of the wishing well. 5. Worry Dolls (p. 93) i. Pipe cleaners ii. Yarn of different colors iii. Embroidery floss of different colors iv. Scissors i. Bend pipe cleaners into the shape of a person to make a stick person. ii. Take yarn or embroidery floss and wrap around pipe cleaners until covered. iii. This took me over an hour to make one. I would suggest this craft be a takehome. iv. Option: Put two pipe cleaners and different colors of yarn in baggies to send home with children. 6. Dreamcatcher (p. 94 and 211) i. Wooden embroidery hoops 4.5 inches ii. Yarn different colors iii. 3 i. Wrapping the hoop takes a long time might take two sessions to do this. ii. Use thick yarn. iii. Make sure to leave enough yarn in top to hang the dreamcatcher. iv. Leave yarn at the bottom to bead and feather. v. Make eight sided webs. Using different colored yarn, tying from one side to the other. vi. VERY time consuming project. 7. Craft Dough (p. 97) i. 2 cups flour ii. 2 cups warm water iii. 1 cup salt iv. 2 tablespoons vegetable oil v. Air tight containers vi. Mixing bowls vii. Food coloring i. Mix salt and warm water together first, until dissolved. ii. Mix in remaining ingredients. iii. Add food coloring to mix, mix well. iv. Put in airtight containers, store in refrigerator. v. Use different kitchen tools to make objects with dough. 8. Doorknob Nose Elf (p. 122) i. Paper plate ii. Construction paper iii. Scissors iv. Glue v. Pom poms vi. Markers i. Cut an X in the middle of the paper plate, big enough to pull over a doorknob. ii. Cut out eyes, nose, cheeks, and ears out of different colored construction paper. iii. Cut out triangle for hat. iv. Glue all parts on to the paper pate. v. Glue a pom pom on the point of the hat. vi. Use black marker for mouth. 10/20/ Craft Tips

4 9. Elf Shoe Craft (p. 122) i. Felt ii. Template iii. Craft glue iv. Pom Poms v. Glitter glue i. Cut felt pieces into elf shoe shape, templates on the Internet. Pre cut these shoes for children. ii. Using glitter pens and pom poms, decorate shoes and let dry. 10. Rainbow Name (p. 125) i. Paper plates ii. Markers or crayons iii. Black permanent markers iv. Paper punch v. Yarn, string or ribbon i. As children arrive, have a helper write each child s name on a paper plate in black marker. ii. Have children trace around their names in the rainbow pattern colors, redorange yellow green blue indigo violet. iii. Punch hole in top of plate. iv. String with yarn, string or ribbon. 11. Moon in the Sky (p. 127) i. White construction paper ii. Pastel colored chalk iii. Spray bottle of water iv. Glue v. White craft pearl i. Use pastels to create a twilight scene on the paper. Press hard using the sides of the chalks. ii. Spray paper lightly with water and chalks will run (messy and wet). iii. Will take time to dry. iv. Then glue pearl on as the moon. I didn t use a pearl I used a clear round stone from the Dollar Store. 10/20/ Craft Tips

5 12. Sheep Magnet (p. 131) i. Water bottle caps ii. Cotton balls iii. Thin craft ribbon iv. Pipe cleaner dark color v. Wiggle eyes vi. Sticky back magnet vii. White craft glue viii. Scissors i. Precut pipe cleaners to about 3 inches in length. ii. Bend and glue to inside of caps. Messy part! iii. Glue small tail on the back and eyes on the front. iv. Bow for neck. I tried tying it, but it didn t work. I made the entire bow by hand, very time consuming. v. If you can afford to buy the pre made tiny bows from Michaels that have adhesive on them, it might be easier. vi. This craft will take at least a second grader or older to do. vii. Place magnet on the bottom of the bottle cap. viii. Let dry a long time. 13. Genie Lamps 2 options (p. 132) a. Option 1 materials i. Genie s Lamp copied on to white cardstock ii. Scissors, unless you cut pattern recommended iii. Crayons or colored pencils iv. Tape or staplers v. Pencils b. Option 1 tips i. Use pre cut Genie Lamp patterns or have children cut out the pattern ii. Have children write their wishes on the insides of the lamp iii. Have children decorate the outside of the lamp like one that would look like a Genie Lamp. iv. Fold it in half and staple or tape shut. c. Option 2 materials i. Half gallon milk jugs, watter bottles, juice bottles, all with lids ii. Multi colors of tissue paper iii. Scissors iv. Water down Elmer s glue in a container v. Brushes d. Option 2 tips i. Make sure all children are wearing old tee shirts or smocks, and cover work tables. ii. Water down the glue. iii. Cut tissue paper into 1 x 1 squares (or bigger). 10/20/ Craft Tips

6 iv. Paint glue onto bottle, then apply tissues in different colors until the entire bottle is covered. v. Let dry. vi. Decorate lid if desired. 14. Seven Day Story Pocket (p. 152) i. One piece of poster board (colored) 12 x 18 ii. Seven pieces of construction paper, 12 x 6, different colors iii. Stapler iv. Days of the week, either printed from the template or labels v. Decorations, scraps, stickers, glitter glue, etc. vi. Yarn vii. Paper hole punch viii. Ziplock bags ix. Old children s magazine i. Cut poster board to 12 x 18. ii. Fold poster board up 6 on the bottom to make pocket. iii. Insert seven different colored pieces of construction paper, 12 x 6. iv. Staple sides together, and you ll have seven pockets. v. Decorate story pocket with stickers, glitter glue, etc. vi. Put stories in one pocket for every day of the week. vii. Ahead of time, take children s magazines, cut up pictures to make a story, put in Ziplock bags. Stories can be changed out weekly or sent home with parents to cut new stories for pocket. Be sure to have lots of stories for all participating children. 15. Animal Stick Puppets (p. 167) i. White cardstock ii. Craft stick iii. Markers or crayonos iv. Tape v. CD Pig on Her Head by Laurie Berkner i. Copy enough animals using templates from the manual for participating children. ii. Pre cut animals for children iii. Color animials iv. Tape craft sticks to cardstock animals v. Use CD to set up the craft idea. 10/20/ Craft Tips

7 16. Cloud Pictures (p. 168) i. Blue construction paper ii. Cotton balls iii. Torn pieces of paper towels iv. Glue i. My cloud looks like page included behind for photocopying. ii. Make enough copies for children. iii. Use glue to glue torn paper towels and cotton balls. iv. Have children describe what their clouds look like. 17. Autograph Book (p. 169) i. Two pieces of black construction paper ii. Stapler iii. Chalk, any color i. Put both pieces of construction paper together, fold in half. ii. Staple the edge together. iii. Have children take turns signing each other s autograph book. 18. Very Lonely Firefly Mobile (p. 169) i. Clip art of shapes from Eric Carle book: 1. Lantern 2. Light bulb 3. Candle 4. Headlights 5. Large firefly ii. Cardstock iii. Ribbons iv. Paper punch v. Tape or glue vi. Markers or crayons vii. Scissors i. Make clip art shape out of cardstock. ii. Have children cut out clip art shapes. I printed mine on a colored printer and cut the shapes. iii. Have children color the clip art. iv. Punch holes in firefly wings and attach four remaining pieces with ribbon. v. Glue or tape ribbon to top of firefly for hanger. 10/20/ Craft Tips

8 19. Edible Glowing Campfire (p. 170) i. Paper plate ii. Small cup of water iii. Pretzel sticks small iv. Red licorice v. Candy corn vi. Fork vii. Cheerios viii. Pretzel rods ix. Red hots x. Marshmallows i. Put all food materials into bowls for children to use. ii. Start campfire ring by placing Cheerios and marshmallows in circle on paper plate. iii. Place pretzel rods into a triangle shape in the middle of the ring. iv. Place red hots in the middle of the pretzel rod triangle. v. Place small pretzel sticks into a teepee shape on top. vi. Place candy corn to look like fire on top. NOTE: The display is glued together. 20. Paper Bag Spider Puppet (variation of craft on p. 191) i. Lunch size paper bags ii. Copies of spider pattern iii. Glue sticks iv. Paper scraps v. Crayons vi. Scissors, unless you cut out spider in advance vii. Markers viii. Wiggle Eyes i. Make enough copies of the spider template from cardstock for children. ii. Have children cut out pieces for the spider or do it ahead of craft time. iii. Have children use markers or crayons to decorate. iv. Glue pieces of spider on lunch size bag. v. Glue on Wiggle Eyes (optional). 10/20/ Craft Tips

9 21. Wash Moon Pattern (p. 205) i. Man in the Moon Pattern copied ii. White card stock or texted painting paper iii. Spray bottle of water iv. Washable watercolors v. Paintbrushes or sponges vi. Area that can be cleaned up easily or table covers and smocks for children. i. Copy pattern onto white cardstock or patterned painting paper. ii. Spray paper with water to dampen it. iii. Paint with water colors to blend the colors. iv. Let dry. (This project takes a long time to dry). 22. Silvery Moon Ornaments (p. 206) i of heavy cardstock or cardboard ii. Aluminum foil iii. Stick on gems iv. Sticker stars v. Hole punch vi. Pipe cleaner i. Cut cardstock or cardboard into crescent moon shapes in advance. ii. Have children cover with aluminum foil. iii. Decorate with stick on gems, stickers, markers, etc. iv. Punch hole towards top of moon. v. Use pipe cleaner to make loop for hanging. 23. Three Dimensional Star (p. 207) i. Foam Paper ii. Scissors iii. Markers iv. Glue v. Paper punch vi. Yarn vii. Glitter glue or sequins i. Cut foam paper into star shapes about 6 to 8 inches big, pattern in manual. ii. Put stars together and cut one slit up to the center. iii. Fold each star out. iv. Let children decorate outsides with markers, glitter glue, etc. v. Punch hole in top of stars. vi. String with yarn to hang. 10/20/ Craft Tips

10 vii. OPTION: Put pre cut stars with fold and slit into baggies, along with piece of yarn. Give each child a baggie as a take home craft. 24. Constellation Projector (p. 208) i. One round cereal box per child ii. Sharp pencils iii. Tape or glue iv. Black poster paper v. White crayons vi. Scissors vii. Pushpins viii. Wrapping paper to decorate boxes ix. Small white stickers x. Small LED flashlight i. Clean out cereal box. ii. Cover the outside of the cereal box with wrapping paper. iii. Decorate the outside of the cereal box. iv. Tape the bottom with duct tape. v. Cut black poster paper 1/8 inch smaller than the lid. vi. Put white stickers on black poster paper. vii. Use push pins into the black poster paper that is attached to the lid. viii. Cut small hole in the bottom for LED light. (Check with local electrical companies that might have flashlights as advertising promotions). ix. This is a difficult project, involves working with sharp objects, and is timeconsuming. It takes about an hour just to prepare the lid. The decorating was easy and quick, but allow at least 1.5 hours for this craft. 25. Shooting Stars (p. 209) i. Felt pieces ii. Cotton balls iii. Scissors iv. Ribbons v. Fabric ribbon i. Pre cut felt into star patterns. ii. Have children place half pieces of cotton balls on tips and one in the middle. iii. Staple together and put ribbons in. iv. Use fabric tape all the way around covering staples. 10/20/ Craft Tips

11 26. Fake Campfire (p. 174 and p. 210) i. 3 pound or 5 pound coffee can ii. Can opener iii. 1 square foot of red and orange silk or flowing material (shiny) iv. Scissors v. Tape vi. Glue E 6000 vii. Red or orange LED lights viii. Small electric fan i. Cut top and bottom out of coffee can. I used a Pampered Chef opener for no sharp edges. ii. Peel label off outside of can. iii. Cut material in 12 inch squares, and then cut into triangles. iv. Glue or tape material to top inside of can. These are the flames. v. Attach LED lights to bottom inside of can. This acts to the light to the flames. vi. I used electrical tape to attach lights. Orange lights can be found at Menards for $5 for a 20 light set; you don t need more than that. vii. Use a small fan on the inside of the coffee can and light to blow the air up to the material, making it look like a real campfire. viii. Make sure you buy only LED lights, because they stay cool, and if you leave this plugged in too long, you may otherwise burn the material. ix. Once both the fan and light are plugged in, you should have a campfire. 27. Northern Light Art (p. 211) i. Chalk sidewalk, regular, pastels ii. Black papers construction, textured, etc. iii. Newspaper to cover tables iv. Paint shirts to cover children i. Cover tables with newspaper. ii. Give children different colors of chalk. iii. Give children black papers iv. Let the children create what the Northern Lights look like, with the different sides of chalk and textured paper. v. Keep the finished crafts for a week or two as a bulletin board. 10/20/ Craft Tips

12 28. Dark Forest Tree (p. 240) i. Large paper grocery bag, turn inside out if printed on ii. Small brown lunch bag iii. White and black scrap paper iv. Glue v. Scissors vi. String or twine i. Open up large bag. ii. Make several cuts from top to bottom at different lengths. iii. Grab around middle under the cuts from the top, twist it together inward. iv. Take string or twine and loosely tighten around the area. v. Twist top tree branches to fluff out. vi. Tear small lunch bag in half lengthwise, tear bottom off. vii. Use half bag for nose. Twist nose at top tight and twist bottom not so tight. viii. Glue nose to bag. ix. Use the other half of the bag for unibrow. Twist into shape. x. Glue unibrow to bag above nose. Might want to use clothes pins to hold in place to dry. xi. Cut out white circles for eyes and small black circles for pupils, glue in place. xii. Cut out leaf shapes of black paper and glue to tree branches. 29. Bloody Zombie Stamp (p. 240) i. Newspaper to cover tables ii. Sheets of foam craft paper iii. Sheet of paper iv. Tempera paints v. Paper plates vi. Foam brushes vii. Low heat glue gun viii. Scissors ix. Paper towels/water/spray cleaner for clean up i. Cover tables with newspaper. ii. Cover children in paint shirts. iii. Pre cut foam craft paper in half. iv. When children come in, write their names on one half of foam paper in pen, do not use markers (they smear). Allow space between letters for cutting and thickness. v. Have children cut their names out, bigger than you have it written. vi. Hot glue the name on to the other half on foam paper backwards. vii. Have children load up each letter with lots of paints that will make them creepy, black, brown, green, red for blood. viii. Turn the name over and press on to half sheet of white card stock. ix. Gently press and pull down the card stock. 10/20/ Craft Tips

13 x. Let dry. xi. MESSY, TIME CONSUMING PROJECT. 30. Where the Wild Things Are Monster Mask (p. 241) i. One large paper grocery bag without print on one side ii. Two brown lunch size paper scks iii. Markers iv. Double sized tape v. Scissors i. If you can t find large grocery bags without print on both sides, turn them inside out. ii. Cut shoulder holes to fit on to children; cut beforehand. iii. Cut eye holes once children try on bag. Mark with pencil, then cut out. iv. Use markers to create a monster face on the front where eyes were cut out. v. Put double sided tape on bottom of two lunch sacks. vi. Attach to sides of large grocery bag near top, as horns. vii. Twist the smaller bags into horn shapes. viii. Wear masks. 31. Monster Roar Enhancer (p. 241) i. Empty, clean tin cans ii. 12 inch balloons iii. Scissors i. Clean cans inside and out, taking paper off the outside ii. Cut open both ends of the can. I used a Pampered Chef opener that leaves no sharp edges. iii. Cut narrow part of balloon off. iv. Pull balloon over one end of can. v. Roar into can. 32. Picture of Scary Monster (p. 242) i. Permanent markers ii. Large piece of cardstock iii. Clothes pin iv. Clothes line v. Cardboard bigger than cardstock vi. Rubbing alcohol vii. Spray bottle i. Clip cardstock to cardboard with clothes pin so the markers don t bleed onto table. ii. Draw a picture of a Zombie or Monster using permanent markers. Can use template from the manual. 10/20/ Craft Tips

14 iii. Spray drawing with alcohol and let it drop off onto the cardboard, letting the alcohol soak in and letting the color run, moving the paper around. iv. Pin the cardstock to the clothes line to dry. v. If you don t spray the cardstock right after being colored, the colors won t run. 33. Make a Lantern (p. 243) i. 9 x 12 colored construction paper ii. 7 x 12 patterned wrapping paper iii. Ribbons iv. Tape v. Scissors vi. Hole punch i. Cut wrapping paper into the above size beforehand. ii. Fold colored construction paper in half length wise. iii. Punch holes into construction paper about an inch from the edge of the paper with paper still folded. iv. Cut straight lines from fold to about an inch from the punched holes in the construction paper. v. Open construction paper, fold side up. vi. Tape printed wrapping paper print side down on both ends to colored construction paper. vii. Tape short sides together. viii. Use ribbon to make hanger for top. 34. Easy Paper Lantern (p. 243) i. Sheets of colored construction paper ii. Hole punch iii. Brads iv. Scissors v. Curling ribbon i. Cut construction paper into 9 x 1 strips. ii. Punch holes in both ends of strips. iii. Have children pick 12 strips of different colors. iv. Line up the strips. v. Put brads in each end. vi. Spread apart strips of paper, forming a circle. vii. Add a loop with curling ribbon on top for hanger. viii. Add long pieces of curling ribbons to bottom, like a tail. 10/20/ Craft Tips

15 35. Braille Words (p. 246) i. Braille letter template ii. Braille alphabet iii. Hole punch iv. Craft foam sheets v. Card stock vi. Glue i. Punch many, many holes in foam paper, enough for each child to spell his or her name this will take hours! ii. Make enough copies for each child of the Braille letter template. Cut out each rectangle. iii. Have each child use foam dots to spell out his or her name in Braille, using the alphabet. iv. Glue to cardstock. IDEA: If you have access to a craft store, there are sticky foam dots that have adhesive. Color the tops with markers, leaving on the cover to the sticky side. Then have children use dots to spell their names. Easier than punching all the dots, and they are not too expensive. 36. Goner the Wolf (p. 247) i. Double sided tape ii. Gray construction paper, 5 x 8 1/2, pre cut for children iii. White cardstock, 1 x 3, pre cut for children iv. Ruler v. Markers vi. Stapler you use the stapler, not the children for safety reasons vii. Red construction paper scraps viii. Black markers ix. White dots i. With black marker, make nose on gray construction paper. Fold paper in half, make a small crease at the bottom, then measure 1 1/2 up, put nose there, draw line down to the bottom. ii. Take white piece of paper and cut teeth on the bottom half. iii. Using double sided tape on the back of white cardstock, stick to the back of gray construction paper. iv. Take back bottom sides of gray paper and cross, then staple together. v. Using double sided tape, put on the inside of the ears that will stick up after you staple the bottom. Tape front to back together, making ears. vi. I painted white eyes on, but you can use white stickers or dots, whichever is easiest. vii. Use black marker to dot the middle of eyes for pupils. viii. Cut long red tongue out of red construction paper and tape to back side of teeth. 10/20/ Craft Tips

16 37. Creepy Apple Heads (pp. 241 and 251) i. Small apples, soft and peeled ii. Craft stick, knives, or plastic knives iii. Toothpicks and bamboo skewers iv. Tissue paper v. Tray i. Let parents decide if they want their children using knives or not. ii. Use toothpicks to make a face on the apple; start with the nose. iii. Use knives to cut the face shape out. iv. When finished cutting out the face, set near a vent or fan to dry. v. Watch as the face shrivels up and turns into a creepy face. 10/20/ Craft Tips
