1 Coral Reef Awareness For further information contact Cheryl A. Brannen Bartow Middle School 550 East Clower Street Bartow, FL n PROGRAM OVERVIEW Coral Reef Awareness: The students participated in a Life Sized Coral Reef. This project exemplifies cooperative learning and hands on activities. They transformed the classroom into a coral reef by using the recycling theme of Earth Day. All materials used can be recycled. The students learned the effects of weather on the coral reef, they will be able to explain how tides, currents and waves can destroy the coral reef surface, and they will understand ways to conserve the world s coral reefs and other materials on earth Room Transformation Ideas: The project is done in a seventh grade science classroom, two weeks prior to Earth Day. My students every year look forward to this unit by visiting it the year prior. We cover the walls of the classroom with blue banner paper to give the room overall ocean water affect. We use green and blue saran wrap to drape along the ceiling to signify ocean waves. Cut outs of seaweed line the bottom border of the room and are made from green construction paper. We construct sea creatures using colored chalk and paper which turn into bright colored fish. Empty 2-liter soda bottles are used to make bottle fish and are hung from the ceiling along with wish fish that the students have written environmental wishes on for visitors to read. Fact Bubbles are displayed on the walls of the ocean with facts about the coral reef. Environmental Awareness Cereal Boxes: Students bring in empty cereal boxes that they decorate with messages on how to reduce, reuse and recycle. The boxes are displayed for the elementary schools to see when they visit our school. n OVERALL VALUE This program can be used in any grade level. The materials are also very inexpensive. It definitely is designed to help kinesthetic learners and all students enjoy it. It meets numerous Sunshine State Standards and FCAT processing skills. n LESSON PLAN TITLES Bottle Fish Environmental Awareness Cereal Boxes Wish Fish Recyclable Sea Creatures Fact Bubbles n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing and vendors follows the lesson plans. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Cheryl Brannen has taught at Bartow Middle School for 10 years and is currently teaching seventh grade science. She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelors Degree in Criminology. For the , she was named Bartow Middle Teacher of the Year and Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year. She is the Science Fair sponsor for her school and this is her first Teacher to Teacher Connection Grant. She is married and has two children
2 Lesson Plan No 1: Bottle Fish These apply to all the Coral Reef Projects SC.D : Students will learn that mechanical and chemical activities shape and reshape earth s surface SC.D : Students will learn that over the earth, organisms are growing, dying and decaying as new organisms are produced by old ones. SC.D : Students will understand that conditions exist in one system influence the conditions that exist in other systems. SC.D : Students will understand that quality of life is relevant to personal experience. SC.D : Students will know the positive and negative consequences of human action on the earth s systems. SC.F : Students will be able to explain how the life functions of organisms are related to what occurs within the cell. SC.G : Students will learn that the interactions of organisms with each other and with the non-living parts of their environments result in the flow of energy and the cycling of matter throughout the system. n MATERIALS (Per Group) empty 2-liter plastic bottle fishing line razor blade stapler lighter large paperclips permanent markers glitter construction paper google eyes tissue paper 1. Make sure bottle is empty and clean. 2. Cut off bottom of the soda bottle around the bottom seem with scissors. 3. Use a black permanent marker and sketch out side fins on each side of the bottle. 4. Staple the bottom together and then trace back fins. Cut out using scissors while holding the bottom together to reinforce the staple. 5. TEACHER ONLY cuts a slit in the side fins so the student can insert the scissors and complete cutting out the fins but being sure to keep the fins intact so the fins can be folded out from the sides of the fish. 6. Glue the google eyes around the mouth of the bottle. 7. TEACHER ONLY uses a lighter to soften the mouth of the bottle so the student can cut a V shape out of each side of the mouth. (Make sure the student uses the inner most part of the scissors because this is where it is the sharpest. It may take more than once because the plastic hardens quickly and do not try to cut if the plastic is too melted. It will stick to the scissors.) 8. Students can be creative and stuff their fish with tissue paper, construction paper, glitter, etc. This needs to be done BEFORE stapling the bottom closed. 9. Attach fishing line to the fish and then tie the paperclip on the other end so it can be attached to the ceiling.
3 Lesson Plan No 2: Environmental Cereal Boxes See previous lesson plan n MATERIALS NEEDED empty cereal box construction paper glue markers 1. Students will transform the cereal boxes into environmental messages and facts. 2. Change the title of the cereal to do with something of the earth, for example, Count Dracula cereal can be changed into Count Recycula. 3. The title need to be hanged everywhere on the box. 4. Pictures of the earth, trees, raindrops, etc. can be added to decorate the box. 5. Add environmental messages such as the three R s, recycle, reduce and reuse. 6. Display in the classroom for visitors.?
4 Lesson Plan No 3: Wish Fish See first lesson plan 1. Cut out a dolphin out of the construction paper. 2. Have the students come up with one environmental wish that they hope could be changed into a law to conserve our planet s resources. 3. They are to write their wish on their fish and hang using fishing line and a large paper clip from the ceiling.? n MATERIALS (Per Group) blue, gray, or light blue construction paper fishing line markers large paper clips.
