3 ST. PATRICK S DAY! ERIN GO BRAGH! IRELAND FOREVER! cardboard inserts from men s shirts or 8 ½ x 11 sheets cut from used giftboxes inexpensive fabric flowers, leaves, twigs buttons, sequins, etc. gift wrap & ribbon scraps travel brochures with photos of Ireland glue sticks, crayons, markers On or prior to St. Patrick s Day, tell students about how Ireland consists of many different counties and that all of the counties celebrate St. Patrick s Day. Tell the class that the St. Patrick s Flag was commissioned in 1783 a red X on a white background. On the day you celebrate, assign one Irish county to 4 5 students. Give each student a cardboard sheet, decorative materials, glue sticks, crayons, and markers. Students will write their name and their county name on the back of their board. Tell your students you have commissioned them to create a flag representative of their Irish county in honor of St. Patrick. Display all of the flags by county around the room atop your bulletin/chalkboards. I can t wait to see all the cool, colorful, creative flags! St. Patick s Day is celebrated on March 17th. EXTRA CREDIT: Research your county and tell the class where your county is located on a map of Ireland. Ask Your Students: Who has Irish ancestors? Which county did they come from? 4

4 CHINESE NEW YEAR! toilet paper rolls red tissue paper twist ties small strips of card stock (can be cut from back of old greeting cards) CONFUCIUS SAYS Compare Chinese traditions to American traditions! Chinese New Year is an opportunity to learn how Chinese traditions are different from and similar to American traditions. He who will not economize will have to agonize. Help others and they ll help you. Don t litter. EXTRA CREDIT: Look up and discuss these words: Before or at the start of Chinese New Year, tell students about this holiday of great significance and symbolism to the Chinese, and explain that it has been observed for centuries! Read aloud a few of Confucius proverbs (available online), and tell how Confucius was revered by the Chinese people and how they formed their behavior and customs based on his philosophy. Discuss which of Confucius proverbs match our way of life in America and which ones don t. Tell each student to write their own proverb (1 or 2 lines), starting with their name (i.e., John says ), on a small strip of card stock. Tell them to place their proverb inside an empty toilet paper roll and wrap the roll in red tissue paper (red is the Asian color of celebration), available in inexpensive packs at dollar or party stores. Twist the tissue at both ends and secure with twist ties. On the day you celebrate Chinese New Year, tell each student to pass his or her proverb to another student. Students can then crack open the rolls and read the proverbs aloud. Discuss why they think each proverb is, or is not, a good rule to live by. proverb motto ethics belief Budget Buddy says: Teachers don t have to spend a lot of money to be a great teacher! 5 CHRISTMAS, HANUKKAH, AND KWANZAA! see list below Make postage stamps to learn about holiday traditions and decorate your classroom! USA Tell students that the U.S. Postal Service releases a new set of holiday postage stamps every holiday season. The first Christmas U.S. postage stamp was issued in 1962, the first Hanukkah stamp in 1996, and the first Kwanzaa stamp in Talk about each of these three holidays and then ask students to complete the artistic activity below. Design your own holiday stamp! Pick a winter holiday. If it s one you don t know much about, research it to learn more about it. Design your postage stamp on a sheet of paper, using images from cards, postcards, magazines, or art you create. Make some snow paint: 1 soap bar, grated, 1 part water; beat to a whip! Supply students with art materials as suggested below: paints, markers, crayons, etc. straws (a package of 100 costs a dollar or less, and they make great paintbrushes! different colored glitter (buy in quantity and divide up into clean, empty grated cheese containers less messy to shake glitter than pour it!) old greeting cards, postcards, and magazines scissors and glue Display students stamps on classroom mobiles! Tie the stamps to coat hangers with yarn or string! Use this activity to explore the different symbols representing holiday traditions, such as the candy cane, candles, and the unity cup. Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25th, Kwanzaa on December 26th and the celebration of Hanukkah varies. Ask Your Students: Besides mailing holiday cards, in what other ways do families and friends communicate with each other? 6
