1 All art projects in this PDF designed by Donna Love for educational purposes only. Do not reproduce or use for profit. Winter Elk Elk spend winters on their winter range where they often feed on bright winter nights. To make this multi-media winter scene, start by painting three or more white mountains and white foreground on 16 x 10 black construction paper. Use a Q-tip to dot stars in the sky. Using a white crayon, add moon and white trees in the middle ground. Let dry. Draw elk on 6 x 8 brown construction paper. Start with a rectangle for the body. Add head, legs, ear and/or antlers and tail. Place students name in the middle of the rectangle. Cut out elk. Turn over and color legs and head dark brown. Add white rump patch. Glue on dry winter snow scene. To frame glue picture on 18 x 12 construction paper. Display proudly. Samples below created by second graders.
2 Limited Pallet Elk Portrait Start this elk portrait using 16 x 16 inch brown butcher paper or light tan tagboard. Draw a two inch border. Show students how to crisscross the whole paper to find the center of the page. The intersection point of the X is the top of the elk s head. Draw the elk s neck and head below this point. Draw antlers above this point. To draw antlers, start with the burr, where the antlers grow out of the elk s head. Add a large c-shape to the burr. Draw two shorter antler tines, the brow and bey tine, facing forward above the elk s eye. Add the beam, which is the long main branch of the antlers. Draw one short tine, the trey tine, pointing upward along the beam. Add a longer one, the dagger, above that. Add two smaller tines, the sur-royal and the royal, to complete the elk s six point antlers. Use only black, white, tan and brown crayons to color the elk, decorate the border, and add a repetitious or repeating design to the background. Enjoy. Samples below by 5 th graders. Show students how to find the center of the page by lightly drawing an X on the square sheet of paper. Put the top of the elk head s in the middle of the page. Headband Hand Print Antlers Bull elk grow and lose their antlers each year. Younger students will enjoy making and wearing hand print headband antlers. Start by tracing hand print on two lightweight paper plates. Cut two-inch strips of black or brown construction paper. Fit headband to student and staple or glue headband. Then staple or glue antlers to the headband. Wear happily!
3 Crayon Textured Designer Elk Elk are brown, but in art they can be any color. Start with four white 8 by 12 sheets of construction paper/student. Color one sheet with white crayon. (It won t show up well, but it still adds texture to the paper.) Color one sheet with gray crayon. Color the next with black crayon. Color the final sheet any other color, but brown. Cut mountains and moon out of the white sheet. Cut foreground hills out of the gray sheet. Cut tree shapes out of the black. Draw and cut an elk out of the colorful sheet. Glue pieces onto an 8 x 12 sheet of black construction paper. To frame, glue picture onto a sheet of 10 x 14 construction paper in a contrasting color. Running, Standing, Walking Elk Elk can run fast. They can run as fast as a race horse moving 45 miles an hour. To make these elk with movable legs, print and copy the pattern shown on the next two pages. You can copy them at the same size, or copy them larger or smaller. You can copy them onto white copy paper and color your elk, or copy onto brown construction paper as shown in the sample. Add antlers to make the bull. Leave the antlers off for a cow elk. Copy one smaller to make a calf elk. Attach the legs to the elk, to make the elk run, walk or stand. Glue onto construction paper, or make a bulletin board elk herd. Add a red nose and it could be Rudolf pulling a sleigh.
