ROMAN MOSAICS Ancient Romans created many mosaics. They often used marble and other stones. 1. Draw a recognizable shape. E.G. Roman soldier, fish, snail, flower 2. Cut up several colors of construction paper, tin foil, and contact papers. The smaller you can cut them the better the mosaic will look. 3. Glue your pieces over the entire drawing including the background. ** You may also be creative and use any other materials in your mosaic. Be sure to make these pieces small.
PAPER WEAVING In the myth of Athena, her pupil, Arachne, challenges Athena to a test of her weaving ability. Arachne s pride caused her to be turned into a spider. Arachne was doomed to spend the rest of her life spinning. MATERIALS: Construction paper in two colors 1 sheet 9 x 24 / 23 cm x 61 cm 1 sheet cut into strips 9 x 1 / 23 cm x 2.54 cm 1. Prepare strips. 2. Fold the 9 x 24 paper in half for a double 12 x 9 (30cm x 23cm) piece of paper. Use scissors to cut eight inch (20cm) long slits, one inch (2.5cm) apart in the paper. 3. Gently slide the paper strips through the large paper overlapping every other paper. 4. Be sure to place the strips close together to form mats, book covers or mountings for bulletin boards. VARIATIONS TO USE: 1. Contrasting colors. 2. Thin and thick strips. 3. Overlapping strips. 4. Squiggles and spirals. 5. Add yarn, twigs, etc.
GREEK STATUE There were statues all over ancient Greece. There were statues of Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, and other gods and goddesses. There were also ones of warriors, horsemen, athletes, farmers, young boys and girls. You are going to make a Greek statue of any subject you choose. Look carefully at several books on Greek art to decide upon the statue you wish to create. MATERIALS: A hammer and two nails Different sizes of thin wire. Wire cutters Pliers A small block of wood Modeling clay Toothpicks Spatula Small container of water 1. Take the wire and make it into a framework for your statue. Nail both ends of the leg wires to the wood block. With wire create a small wire glove on the end of each of the arms. 2. Take modeling clay and start forming the body, head, arms, and legs by pressing the clay into and around the wire. 3. Cover the nails with clay and make the form of a foot over each nail. 4. Put clay hands on the wire gloves on the ends of the arms. 5. Dip you fingers in water and smooth out all the parts of your statue. 6. With a toothpick and spatula make distinguishing features on the statue. Use water to smooth out the features. Cover the wooden block with clay to complete the statue. OPTIONAL: Decorative band to go around the head. Helmet Shield
GREEK VASE MATERIALS: White/black craft paper Tissue Felt tip pens black fine and thick, orange thick Glue 1. Choose a vase shape. 2. Draw your shape on white paper. 3. Choose a Greek myth to illustrate on your vase. 4. Draw your myth on the vase. (You may trace it if you wish) 5. Draw a Greek motif around the top and bottom of your vase. 6. Color your vase using the red-figure method or the black-figure method. (See Greek pottery styles) 7. Cut the vase shape out and frame on a contrasting paper.
GREEK POTTERY STYLES The Greek potters decorated their pottery in two styles. The black-figure style was a method where the design was painted in black over the red natural color of the clay. Using a black felt tip pen, sketch a Greek vase on a piece of red construction paper. Follow the other instructions to complete your designs. Hand your paper in to your teacher. The red-figure method of decorating pottery possibly began in fifth century B.C. The figures and scenes were left in the natural red of the clay. The background was covered in solid black.
MAKE A GREEK MASK Every Greek actor wore a mask while on stage. The expression was exaggerated so that the entire audience could see. The mouth was made with a large opening so that the actor could project his voice. 1. Hold construction paper against someone s face and carefully mark the position of the eyes, nose, mouth, and chin. Let the paper extend at least two inches below the chin. 2. Decide on an expression for your mask. Draw in the angle of the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth to convey the expressions. 3. Cut out the eyes of the mask, make a wedge cut for the nose, and cut an enlarged mouth hole. Round the bottom edge of your mask and cut the rest to a desired shape. Ears, hair, and other features and decorations can be added with other scraps of construction paper and crayons or markers.
DIORAMA Create a diorama out of a shoebox or file folder. Your diorama should show the acropolis and agora of a city-state in ancient Greece. Use illustrations in your book and other resources about ancient Greece. You should create an authentic scene that incorporates buildings and people.
STORY COLUMN Trajan, an emperor of Rome increased the size of the Empire through many army campaigns. He honored his victories on a column that showed his heroic deeds and battles. The stories are told in pictures that wind around the column in a spiral. SUPPLIES: Large piece (18x24) of bendable cardboard. Long strip of plain white paper 5-8 inches wide. Stapler, tape, pencils, paint, colored pencils. 1. Roll cardboard into a tube, staple ends and tape. 2. Find out how much paper you will need by wrapping it around the column. (Don t attach and leave extra 2 inches) 3. Remove paper and mark 1/2 inch border along both edges. 4. Decide upon a story that you could draw. It should be about the Romans. 5. Decide on the scenes. How many will you need to wrap around your column. Mark a space for each scene. 6. Draw and color your scenes. 7. Wind your story strip around the column from bottom to top. Use glue and staples to secure your strip. 8. Place your column on a base.
GREEK GOD POSTER 1. Look for pictures of Greek gods. 2. Draw a picture of one of the Greek gods. Make sure they are attired in their usual clothing. 3. Add their attributes to the pictures. (i.e. objects that are often associated with that God.) e.g. Athena might hold a shield with an owl. 4. Clearly label the name of the god. 5. Color your poster.
MYTHICAL MONSTER DRAWING Many cultures contain accounts of fearsome monsters such as dragons, giants and serpents. In most myths, a hero, usually with the aid of a divine protector, is able to overcome the monster and save the people it has threatened. The Chimera is a particularly terrible monster, as described in Bellerophon and the Flying Horse. Famous monsters of Greek mythology include the Minotaur, the Hydra, the Sphinx, and the Chimera. Some of these monsters, like the Minotaur and the Sphinx, have both human and animal characteristics. Others, like the Chimera, are made up of parts of different animals. The Hydra is a monster with nine serpents heads that grow back when cut off. Use you imagination to come up with a fearsome monster. Draw a picture of your monster. Then write a brief description of it.
LABYRINTH (MINOAN) MATERIALS: 12x12 colored construction paper. Compass, ruler, pencil, scissors. Black marker BACKGROUND: Theseus had to make his way through a labyrinth at Knossos. 1. Find the center of the paper by dividing it into fourth. (Do not crease it!) 2. Draw a circle on the paper with a compass. 3. Draw 4-6 smaller circles within your large circle. 4. Divide the circle into 4 segments. 5. Continue making designs. Be sure that each of the 4 segments is identical. 6. Use your black marker to trace over the design and fill in some of the spaces.
ROMAN COIN PIN MATERIALS: Foil paper, cardboard. Scissors Pen, pencil Large coin. Safety pin, glue, tape. Blunt object for rubbing. You will be rubbing your coin. 1. Place foil square over the profile side of the coin. 2. Rub with fingernail and blunt handle until image comes through. 3. Place coin on cardboard and draw a circle around. Cut out the cardboard circle. 4. Place foil over the cut circle and tape edges to the back. 5. Embellish your coin head with a Roman look, Roman numeral, and/or olive branch. Use the end of a pen to etch this in. Be careful not to tear the foil! 6. Glue a pin to the back.
