2 Olympian Descriptions Students use this grid template to help them research the Gods of Mount Olympus. A detailed answer key is included! This chart really helps students keep their facts straight a great test review tool! Hero Wanted Poster Students brainstorm heroic qualities and create a wanted poster for their ideal hero. This makes a great introductory activity to the heroes of Greek Mythology! Odyssey Playbills Students create playbills for the story. Students must choose famous actors/actresses to play each of the important roles, and defend their choices. Create Your Own Greek Mask A detailed set of materials and instructions for students to create papier mache Greek masks. These look amazing hung on the wall, or can be used

3 ANCIENT GREECE CREATE YOUR OWN MONSTER Monster: 1) any plant or animal of abnormal shape or structure 2) any imaginary creature part human and part animal, or made up of the parts of two or more different animals. WELL KNOWN MONSTERS FROM GREEK MYTHOLOGY Argus - had over 100 eyes all over his body Gorgons - had snakes growing from their heads instead of hair Cerberus - a giant three headed dog Polyphemus - a Cyclops, with a single eye in the middle of his forehead Hydra - a nine headed giant serpent Scylla - had many fierce dog heads that ate sailors alive Sirens - winged creatures with the heads of women, who used their beautiful songs to lure men to their death Minotaur - a creature that was half man and half bull In small groups, we will be using found objects to create our own mythological monsters. You may chose to model any monster you can dream up use your imagination! REQUIREMENTS Found Object Monster /20 Using found objects (from class and home), create a representation of your monster. Your monster should be colorful and high quality. 3 Paragraphs of information about your monster /30 These paragraphs should be on the following topics: Description, Location (place where it can be found), and adventures (important life events of your monster). These paragraphs should be neat and tidy, well organized, and free of spelling and grammar errors. This assignment will be due on.

4 STEVE THE GRASS MONSTER DESCRIPTION Steve is a Mythological grass monster much feared in Ancient Greece. The very mention of his names sends shivers down the backs of the warlike Spartans. His fur is believed to be green and mottled, giving him a grass like appearance. This acts as camouflage, allowing him to blend into his habitat with little effort. This is said to be helpful for Steve, as he apparently likes to lie in the grass outside Sparta s city walls, waiting for unsuspecting victims to step on him. Beautiful maids who enter the fields unescorted to pick flowers are said to be his favorite things to snack on. It is believed that he has long green arms with pronounced fingernails, which he uses to tear open his victims. No Ancient Greek has ever actually seen Steve, as he is quite shy. The Greeks believe that he prefers to do his snacking when there is no one around to see him. LOCATION Steve is rumored to be found in the grassland surrounding Sparta. Grown from a seed that fell from Zeus s pocket on his way to Mount Olympus, it is believed that Steve sprouted from the ground fully formed. He is rumored to be found lying in the grass, waiting to wreak havoc and eat unescorted individuals who happen to pass by. ADVENTURES Steve has had many adventures in his short and tortured life. He has been known to grab hold of the ankle of many Greek heroes as the rush across the grassland into battle, causing them to fall from their horses. However, his existence is yet to be proven, as he tends to hide once he has wreaked havoc. He has been blamed for biting the heel of the great Achilles, spraining the big toe of Odysseus, and stealing the sandal of mighty Aries. However, none of this has ever been proven.

5 THE ODYSSEY CREATE YOUR OWN PLAYBILL TASK You are a famous director about to put on a play about The Odyssey. You really want your production to be successful, so you decide to create an eye catching playbill to help advertise for your play. REQUIREMENTS An Eye Catching Cover /10 -This should state the title of the play (The Odyssey), as well as your name (Directed by: ). -You want your cover to stand out, so make sure to add some creative illustrations. Your cover should be full color. A Cast of Characters /20 -You will need to decide on who will be playing each of the main roles in your play, and list them inside your playbill. You may choose students from the class or famous celebrities. You will need to include a short paragraph on each of the characters, explaining why you chose the particular people to play them. Illustrations /10 -You will need to include a variety of full color illustrations inside your playbill, depicting scenes from your production. 6 ANCIENT GREECE MYTHOLOGY PUPPET SHOW REQUIREMENTS In small groups, you will be creating a puppet show presentation of a Greek myth. Your group will be given a script; you will be required to create puppets and present the show to the class. PUPPETS /25 Using the template provided, your group is required to create a puppet for each of the characters in your play. Each puppet should be full color and high quality. Puppet clothing should resemble that worn by the ancient Greeks. PRESENTATION /25 Your group will be required to present your puppet show to the class. Your presentation should be loud, clear, and well rehearsed. TOTAL: /50 Marks This assignment will be due on:

8 ANCIENT GREECE ATHENS AND SPARTA TRAVEL BROCHURES You have been hired by the ancient Greeks to create a travel brochure advertising the city state of Athens or Sparta. Your brochure must be eye catching, full color, and contain a lot of important information about your chosen city state. REQUIREMENTS A paragraph of information about the following: o Daily life /10 o Education /10 o Military Service /10 A paragraph of information describing why you think tourists should visit the city-state. /10 Full color images and graphics to help advertise your city state. /10 TOTAL: /50 Marks This assignment will be due on:

9 ANCIENT GREECE CREATE YOUR OWN GREEK MASK Materials: Mask form Plaster gauze Bowl of water Petroleum Jelly Papier Mache Pulp Paint Accessories (yarn, fake fur, etc.) Procedure: 1. Use your computer to research Greek masks. What were they used for? What did they look like? Make a few notes in your workbook. 2. Inside your workbook, make a few sketch ideas of what you would like your mask to look like. When you have found one you like, do a good copy (full color) on a separate sheet of paper. 3. As a class, we will be viewing and critiquing the mask pictures. After the viewing, you will be given a list of comments/suggestions about your mask. Use these comments/suggestions to improve your mask. Draw another copy of your improved mask (full color) on a separate sheet of paper. 4. Coat your mask form with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Dip the plaster gauze strips into the water, and place them over your mask. Use your completed mask picture to help you with your creation. Make sure to leave eye and mouth holes! 5. Allow the mask to dry. 6. The masks are ready for facial expressions! Use the papier mache mash for the facial contours and exaggerations of wrinkles, sags, bags, cheeks, and chins. 7. Allow the mask to dry. 8. Paint your mask with a few coats of white paint. Allow your mask to dry. 9. Paint details on your mask. Allow your mask to dry. 10. Attach any accessories needed for your mask (fake hair, beards, etc.) Now your mask is complete! They will be marked out of 25, according to the attached rubric. 10 ANCIENT GREECE HEROES WANTED Task: As a class, we have brainstormed the qualities of a hero. Now it is your job to create a wanted poster advertising for a mythological hero. You will want to be sure to include lots of distinguishing characteristics about the type of hero you are looking for, as well as an eye-catching picture. Requirements: Your assignment is required to include the following: A bold title A description of the hero you are looking for A paragraph explaining why their expertise is required A full color picture of the hero Information concerning the reward that is being offered This assignment will be due on.
