2 Collaging From Journal Fodder 365 by Eric M. Scott and David R. Modler Collage elements are the food for your journal hence the term fodder and as you begin to glue in photos and other ephemera, your journal will begin to swell and grow. Incorporate personal fodder that helps to tell your personal history, and consider a basic procedure to make certain that all your pieces are glued in well. Materials list journal ephemera scissors glue stick scrap paper If necessary, trim your piece with scissors. You can even 1 cut people and objects out of photos, eliminating the background of the photos and allowing these items to interact more with the page. Turn your collage element over onto a piece of scrap 2 paper. Spread the glue stick all over the back. The scrap paper allows you to cover the entire back, and keeps glue off of your work area or journal if you go off the edge. Place the piece into your journal. Rub or burnish the 3 piece for a minute or two to make certain that it adheres well. Consider placing a clean sheet of paper over the collaged piece while burnishing so as not to damage the image or accidentally spread glue. 80 stickers is an easy way to collage both the outside and inside of your journal because there is Tip}Using no need for adhesive. It may not be obvious how stickers can aid in calming and focusing the mind, but if you find stickers with images and sayings that speak to this intention, they can be successfully integrated. Perhaps they are spiritual sayings and images. Maybe they can act like mantras and remind you to slow down. If you aren t certain where to place your stickers, pop them into your fodder pocket until you discover an appropriate place for them.

3 Integrating Collage We have particular notions of the proper ways to utilize our techniques, and collage is no different. We can fall into the rut of gluing collage onto the page and then doing little else with it. However, the journal page is not simply a fancy frame for the image and does not need to be created like a scrapbook layout. Once the collage element is in your journal, it does not mean that your creative process has to stop there. Consider how you want the image to connect with the page that surrounds it. Look at ways to add to or expand the image with additional drawing or paint, and experiment with ways to recontextualize the collage on the page through purposeful layering. 4 Alternatives to Glue Sticks Because of its portability, the glue stick is the go-to adhesive for collaging cutouts and images into the visual journal. But it is not always the right glue for every piece of collage, and there are other materials that can be utilized. A clear acrylic medium works well as an adhesive for incorporating collage pieces, especially glossy or thick materials, and it can also be used to add a textural quality to your work. Materials list journal ephemera acrylic medium stiff bristle brush wax paper Trim your collage piece if necessary, and turn it upside 1 down on some scrap paper. Use a stiff bristle brush to spread an even layer of the paste or gel medium on the back. Place your collage piece on your page and rub gently. 2 A piece of wax paper works great to keep the glue or medium from oozing all over your page or your hands. Rub gently to make certain the collage piece is fully adhered. Tip} Tip} Because the acrylic medium is actually acrylic, it is very important to thoroughly wash out brushes with warm water and soap so that the brushes do not get ruined. Sometimes you may need to close your journal in order to hold the collage piece flat. Use wax paper to keep the pages from accidentally gluing together. 82

6 84 FODDER PLEASE! What kind of fodder will you use? Will it be meaningful? Silly? Personal? Pretty? Messy? A few ideas for you: movie or concert stubs, bit and pieces from travel brochures, receipts restaurant, gas station, store, labels, newspaper or magazines headlines, ads, fibers buts of yarn or fabric, leaves... Seriously, the possibilities are limitless.
