Ask chn to sort images of sculpture into piles of their own choosing (mix of local sculpture, other British and also ancient Roman) How did you sort your cards and why? What do you think the purpose of sculpture is? Are there any questions you would like to find the answer to in relation to sculpture? Record responses on IWB to return to at the end of the unit. Identify ways in which the environment influences our lives and how we feel, suggest how art has been used to improve a place. Outcomes/Evidence that teaching has taken place Chn will discuss elements of sculpture, it s purpose and function in society. Chn will develop questions they may want to answer or explore regarding sculpture. Chn will record their own thoughts on how environment can influence us and how sculpture can be used to enhance this. 2 How can I use paper to make 3-D forms? Part 1 I explore paper mache techniques to create 3-D objects. How to ideas: How can we use paper to create something 3-D? Supply each table with a pile of scrap paper/newspaper and glue For the glue - Mix one-part flour with one part of water (eg, 1 cup flour and 1 cup water, or 1/2 cup Chn will use instructions to develop their technique in handling and manipulating paper to create 3-D shapes. Writing opportunity: Chn will develop a set of instructions to guide someone

3 flour and 1/2 cup water) until you get a thick glue-like consistency. Add a bit more water if it's too thick. Mix well with a spoon to get rid of all the lumps. (or watered down PVA or wall paper paste) else in making a 3-D object from paper. In pairs ask them to completely cover the balloon. Then leave to dry completely. 2 How can I use paper to make 3-D forms? Part 2 History link I will explore images of Roman Masks. I will use my understanding of Roman art to inspire my creativity to create my own mask. How successful were you in making 3-D objects from paper? What did you find difficult? How could you be more successful next time? Explore images of Roman Masks. Chn will select images they like and create a planning board page in their sketch books so they can use this to design their own mask. Children will produce a finished 3-D Roman Mask Children will then be given half of their balloon and will firstly sketch on the Roman mask design and then will use wire, tissue paper and glue to build up the features they have planned. Chn may have to cut eye/mouth holes to complete their design please note risk assessment and all safety to be adhered to when using sharp implements.

4 3 Who was Constantin Brancusi? Y34 Spring 1 Art Sculpture 3-D I broaden my knowledge of great artists, architects and designers in history. - Pdf teachers resources Part 1 part 2 Introduce the work of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi. Using a prompt sheet and paperbased and internet resources chn will research key facts about Constantin Brancusi and gather images of his work. Writing opportunity: The resulting information will be used to compile a short biography of Constantin Brancusi. Chn will produce a basic biography on the life and work of Constantin Brancusi. Chn will collect images of Brancusi s work. 4 How can I gather ideas for making a sculpture? Can I make a plan for a piece of sculpture? How can art improve an environment? I explore ideas and collect visual and other information to help me to develop my work. I keep these in my art sketchbook. I have studied other artists drawings and have experimented with some of these styles. Plan and design models from observation or imagination. Class discussion: How can art improve an environment? Discuss what environment means and how where we live, work and play affects and influences our lives and feelings. What enhances and environment? (Light, cleanliness, positive sounds, pleasing objects etc) What detracts from an environment? (mess, litter, noise etc) Chn will sketch, photograph and discuss elements of the environment around school and compile these in their sketchbooks. Could use this A n opportunity to visit local sculptures. Chn will sketch ideas for their sculpture into art books. Walk around the school and make rubbings and photographs of shapes, colours and patterns, people s comments about how the area is used and what they think and feel about it.

5 Add these ideas to sketchbook for visual and other information to inform their designs. Chn will then sketch some initial design ideas for their sculpture. 5 How can I use 3-D shapes to create other forms? 6 How can I use clay techniques to create a sculpture? I can make nets of shapes to create recognisable forms. I can join these together to create abstract forms. My 3D work has a well thought out purpose. I use the technique of adding materials to create texture, feeling, expression or movement. (e.g wrinkles on a portrait sculpture.) I use clay to construct a 3-D sculpture. Carve the clays surface to create shapes, texture and pattern. I use carving techniques to reflect images I have observed and drawn in the natural world. Discuss the chn s ideas for designs for a sculpture for a chosen area from the previous lesson. Group children into small teams to develop their ideas for a single design considering how a sculpture would improve that site or place. Give a variety of card nets for shapes such as cubes, cuboids, pyramids etc and ask chn to develop these into a rough version of their chosen design. To add more textured elements or to round surfaces chn could use mod-roc to wrap around or add textile or other materials to develop their ideas. Discuss the opposing techniques used in sculpture either the layering up or joining of materials or alternatively the process or carving removing material to reveal the sculpture beneath. Model the techniques required to create patterns in clay carefully and effectively by scoring the design. Chn will produce a 3-D interpretation (maquette), of their sculpture designs in groups. Chn will produce their sculpture which will include a surface pattern.

6 Also model the way to correct a mistake, by adding a little water and smoothing over and starting again. Relate back to chn s original designs for their chosen sculpture. 7 Can I evaluate my own and others work to prompt improvements 8 What did you learn during this topic? What questions are still unanswered? How do you feel the topic went? I comment on similarities and differences between my own and others work. I adapt and improve my own work. Note elements of safety to be adhered to when using sharp implements. Evaluate the process: What proved difficult? What advice would you give to someone carving a sculpture for the first time? Chn will evaluate their own work against that of others in the class. Luckily with soap carving it is possible to re-attach material when mistakes are made and this will give the chn opportunity to evaluate and then adapt and improve their own work. Children finish their sketchbooks, sticking in photographs from big art session. Ask children to think about: the skills and knowledge they have developed during the project; what they would like to develop further; how they feel the topic could be even better. Chn will have evaluated their own work and the work of others and adapted and improved their own work as a result. Children will have reflected upon the topic, and written it down in their sketchbooks. Children s sketchbooks will be finished. Children can write their thoughts down in their sketchbooks.
