3 Key Skills that can be covered This term s artist to study is: Possible activities including use of Computing and Technology Outcomes/Evidence that teaching has taken place Homework opportunities Degas 1 Explore the roles and purposes of artists, craftspeople and designers working in different times and cultures Show the children a picture of Degas and some of his works What do you want to know about our artist or about art from this period? Children work in groups and use Ipads to find facts about Degas Ask the children to research the Artist Degas in pairs with focus being on his drawings and what he was most well-known for Give 20 mins and make into competition to see which group finds most facts Write each fact on strips of coloured paper (backing paper strips are good) Children feed back their findings Blue tack strips onto display board to create collage of facts about Degas Colourful Display of facts about Degas on display board Ask the children to find objects with different textures that they might like to draw Bring into school for 3 rd lesson 2 Use dry media to make different marks, lines, patterns and shapes within a drawing Use different techniques for different purposes ie shading, hatching within their own work Discuss with the children different materials they have used to draw with Children make a list of all materials they have used to draw/paint with Feed back and list together on board Tell children they are going to concentrate on drawing this half term and particularly charcoal drawing What is charcoal? (Year5/6 refer to Kensuki s Kingdom where he makes own) Watch videos They explain about shading and using different strengths of pencils to create different effects Using the powerpoint about drawing Look at slide 6 shading and following slides that give children chance to have a go Children work in art books, replicating different shading effects Children will have samples of different shading techniques in their books and will have used different strength pencils to show this Use different shading techniques to try to draw the objects you found at home with different textures
4 3 Tell children that today they are going to have a go at using charcoal Watch short video clip Discuss with children the difficulties when using charcoal Ie Smudging How could they combat that? ie Put piece of paper of paper over drawing to lean hand on Spray with hair spray when finished to stop any smudging Discuss use or rubber to create white parts Go to slide 10 of powerpoint And do activity on slide 12 (Children might have brought own objects in or collect something from in classroom) Children will have created shading techniques in their books using charcoal and will have created charcoal picture of an object of their choice Ask children to recreate their shading techniques from day before but using charcoal 4 Develop close observation skills using a variety of view finders Show an awareness of how paintings are created ie Composition What did Degas Draw? How does he use charcoal? (copies of pictures below plan) Use the two pictures to explore the techniques used to create movement in the pictures Stick picture in art book and annotate with ideas about the techniques Degas used for shading, movement etc How does Degas show that the dancers are moving? Do elements of the drawing look posed? Are the dancers bending their legs? By the end of the session the children should have explored the techniques needed to create movement in their drawing The will have an annotated picture showing the techniques Degas used for his pictures 5 Begin to use simple perspective in their work Ask the children to take their sketch books outside and observe a PE lesson or playtime Can they create a picture of someone moving? (Remember the techniques Degas used) Use pencils and take note of the shape of movement, the angle of arms, legs, etc
5 Begin to develop an awareness of composition, scale and proportion Adapt their work according to their views and describe how they might develop it further Year 56 B1 Art - Drawing using Charocal 2017 Degas and charcoal Watch video clip Now can they re-sketch their picture using the techniques shown Evaluate their sketch and make a list of things that they are going to change in the next session to create a final picture in the style of Degas, using charcoal 6 Identify artists who have worked in a similar way to their own work Lines, Marks, Tone, Form and Texture Explain that today they are going to use these modern pictures to sketch and draw showing the skills they have learnt during the unit Ie Mark making, shading, movement and using charcoal Re-create their sketch from previous lesson, using charcoal Children will have produced a final piece of work using charcoal in their sketch books or on A4 drawing paper, in the style of Degas Continue to practise sketching and shading at home
