1 Gesture Drawing Gesture drawings are quick, energetic responses that capture how the figure is moving, and not what he or she looks like. In class the model will take quick (1-5 minute) poses, and students react by drawing economical lines of information that capture the entire figure. The head, hands and feet are always included even if their forms are just suggested. The purpose of gesture drawing is to help the artist loosen up and not obsess with detail. When an artist obsesses over detail, they do not capture the animated, fluid pose of the figure. Instead the figure will appear rigid, flat and lifeless. Types of Gesture Drawing Quick 1-minute Contour Line Gesture Line Gesture with Line Weight Proportions of the Human Figure The height of the human form is divided into eight equal parts based on the height of the head. The middle of the body occurs at the pelvic arch. Other major divisions occur at the mid-chest and the knees. The width of a man s shoulders is three times the width of his head. The width of a woman s shoulders is two times the width of her head.

2 Proportions of the Fashion Figure aka the Croquis Croquis: In fashion, the term croquis refers to a sketch of a figure (typically 9 heads tall or taller). Female Fashion Figure (9 Heads) Unlike the human form, which is eight heads tall, the fashion figure is nine heads tall. For the female fashion figure, the additional head is added to the length of the legs, specifically the feet, which always appear as if they are in high heals. The fashion figure is also higher busted, broader and squarer shouldered and very narrow in the hips.

3 Male Fashion Figure (9 Heads) The male fashion figure still takes on 9 heads but unlike its female counterpart, the pelvis remains centered vertically and the hips remain in proportion to the chest, however the legs are kept slender and show no muscle tone unlike the upper body.

4 Urban Adaptation Fashion Illustrations Step 1) Croquis: Develop 2 strong croquis of the figure (back and front view). Your croquis must be complete (head, hands and feet), and both croquis should be the same size. Use your croquis as a base for drawing/ collaging your final concepts for your Urban Adaptation garment. Use tracing paper to transfer your croquis onto multiple pieces of watercolor paper or charcoal paper, and begin sketching back and front views for your Urban Adaptation garment. Materials: Graphite Pencils Tracing Paper 11 x 17 Charcoal Paper Step 2) Fashion Illustration: Begin to play with materials that represent the colors, textures, shapes, layers and silhouettes you wish to achieve in your final design. Bring materials you can use to represent color and texture. Don t be afraid to experiment. Old magazines Found objects Fabric samples Color prints of Chinatown Charcoal Pencils & Paper Watercolor paint & Paper X-acto knife/scissors Rubber Cement

5 Step 3) Fashion Illustration/Photomontage Composite each fashion illustration back into the environment of inspiration to create a final photomontage of your garment in Chinatown. To begin, scan your fashion illustration collage or watercolor (at 300 dpi) or photograph (in bright natural light). Bring your fashion illustration into Photoshop, copy and paste each figure (back and front view) onto a new layer and remove the white background. Then select one Chinatown photo in which you will place your fashion illustrations. Open your Chinatown photo in Photoshop and size it to roughly 11 x 17 inches. Your photo should be the location of inspiration for your Urban Adaptation garment. Copy and paste your fashion illustration (back and front view) into your Chinatown photo and scale your figures so that they fit into the foreground of the environment. Homework: Print the 11 x 17 Photoshop document of your Photomontage on the small color printers. 11 x 17 = Tabloid Extra Paper. Your Photomontage contains 2, collaged or watercolor croquis (back and front view) composed into the Chinatown environment. Write a 2-3 paragraph description of your design process and concept development for your garment. Post your description on your learning portfolio along with jpgs of your final photomontage. Bring your printed photomontage to class
