4 2012 Strategic Priorities The OI Advisory Board is happy with the strategic priority direction the OI is heading in. The 2012 Strategic Priorities will be uploaded to the staff intranet. 4

5 PhD Development Program The next session of the PhD development program has been tentatively confirmed for 3pm Friday 4 th May. The topic is How to write successful grant applications at PhD level and will be delivered by Dr Krystyna Haq, Graduate Research Education and Training Team. More information will follow by . 6 Ocean Solutions Dialogues Topic 1: Disasters The workshop for the first Dialog on Disasters was held on 8 March with a Public Lecture on the 7 March. There were a some of significant outcomes from the workshop for OI including being invited to participate in an emergency response session in Bunbury with Dept of Transport and invitations for further involvement with APPEA in their planning activities. 6

7 Ocean Solutions Dialogues Topic 2: Spatial Planning The initial brainstorm session on the role of science in informing spatial planning for the safe and sustainable operation in the marine environment was held on 15 March. This Dialogue will be developed by Euan, Kimberly and Erika. This Dialogue will likely be held in October

9 OI Visitors Program One of the initiatives for 2012 is the launch of a Visitors Program. Details of the program and forms have now been developed. Forms available from the Staff section on the web, or from Tracy Parker directly. Applications close Monday 14 th May

11 News Shenton wins at Beijing Youth Science Competition. Not only were they winners but, outstanding ambassadors for UWA, Shenton College and Australia. Edward Leman y10 Silver medal supervised by Prof Gary Kendrick and Dr Matthew Fraser 11

13 Artist in Residence Angela Rosen has been retained as an Artist in Residence for the OI. Her current work is communicating marine science with primary school children through art. Angela Rossen will be invited to provide a 15 minute presentation at the next OI Members Briefing on her project with the OI. 13

14 Governance Arrangements Carlos will be returning May and one week in July. Back on 1 October for 6 months. Carlos in weekly contact with Tracy and Lauren and available to meet via Skype if necessary. Mark Cassidy is currently on sabbatical until October. Alistar Robertson Acting Deputy Director when a physical presence is needed until October. Requests to Alistar have to be cleared previously with Carlos and Tracy. 14
