Estk, Assciate Prfessr Curse syllabus and schedule English : 영문학개관 2 (Histry f English Literature 2) Phne: Mn 10:30-11:45 / Wed. 09:00-10:15 Office: Curse descriptin estk@skku.edu (this is fr emergency use nly) This curse is a cmplement curse t 영문학개관 1 (The Histry f English Literature I) and it cntinues where that curse ended. Beginning with the Rmantic perid, this curse cntinues with the pressing questin abut why we shuld study English Literature when there are s many ther imprtant things ging n in the wrld. It asks abut the cntinued impact English Literature has n the wrld, and what impact it has n ur daily lives in Krea. Can it help us t get a jb, fr instance? Or can it help us t live better lives? Can it imprve the quality f ur lives? In what ways can we measure the effects, and in what respects are we unable t measure the effects f studying literature? Unlike the first curse, hwever, much f the literature that we are studying in this ne is much clser t the realities f ur cntemprary lives. The issues are a lt clser t us, the language is a lt mre similar t tday s English, and even sme f the peple are still alive. The cultural frces shaping the emerging literature f each perid are radically different as we mve thrugh the ages. We will lk at hw these differences are imprtant t the study f literature, and we will develp skills apprpriate fr this kind f activity. As in the first curse, amng the things we will cver in this curse are representative selectins f English literature frm a variety f critical perspectives in rder t develp a greater understanding f the literature and its place in the wrld. We will learn abut the elements that have cme t characterize gd writing, hw writers use literary devices t prduce such writing, and what literary frms have develped. The gals f this curse fllw thse f the first part, and students will learn the fllwing: 1] hw t read, analyze, and talk abut literary texts; 2] hw the English literary cann frmed and cntinues t frm; 3] hw these ld texts are relevant tday; and

2 4] hw learning abut the cultural cntexts f literature can braden ur perspectives n life and peple. Required materials 1] Nrtn Anthlgy f Literature vlume II (8th editin). Ed. Abrams 2] Other materials will be distributed in class. Evaluatin: Students will be evaluated n the basis f the fllwing: Midterm. 35% Final examinatin.. 35% Hmewrk, Quizzes, and class tests. 20% Attendance. 10% Academic cnduct: Attendance in this curse is mandatry. If students d nt attend, then they may d prly r even fail (students wh miss ne-third r mre f a curse will nt be able t pass the curse). In additin, students shuld cme t class n time. Students wh are habitually late withut gd reasn will lse marks. Finally, cheating f any kind will be severely punished: the University expects everyne t cnduct their academic wrk with diligence, hnesty, and sincerity.
